New Polish Films: WITH SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Andrzej Wajda’s School: THE MASTER AND HIS TRAINEES “Peter and the Wolf”: SECOND OSCAR FOR A FILM MADE IN SE-MA-FOR STUDIO Russia, Afghanistan and Belarus: IN POLISH DOCUMENTARIES „PETER AND THE WOLF” Polish Cinema 2008 THE TRAGEDY OF PRISONERS OF WAR, THE MISERY OF THEIR FAMILIES ANDRZEJ WAJDA’S “KATYŃ” Polish Cinema 2008 editorial “Kino” monthly , a journal providing a perceptive and original insight into various aspects of the film industry, has accompanied Polish cinema for over forty years now. In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films. -
Rape and the Virgin Spring Abstract
Silence and Fury: Rape and The Virgin Spring Alexandra Heller-Nicholas Abstract This article is a reconsideration of The Virgin Spring that focuses upon the rape at the centre of the film’s action, despite the film’s surface attempts to marginalise all but its narrative functionality. While the deployment of this rape supports critical observations that rape on-screen commonly underscores the seriousness of broader thematic concerns, it is argued that the visceral impact of this brutal scene actively undermines its narrative intent. No matter how central the journey of the vengeful father’s mission from vengeance to redemption is to the story, this ultimately pales next to the shocking impact of the rape and murder of the girl herself. James R. Alexander identifies Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring as “the basic template” for the contemporary rape-revenge film[1 ], and despite spawning a vast range of imitations[2 ], the film stands as a major entry in the canon of European art cinema. Yet while the sumptuous black and white cinematography of long-time Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist combined with lead actor Max von Sydow’s trademark icy sobriety to garner it the Academy Award for Best Foreign film in 1960, even fifty years later the film’s representation of the rape and murder of a young girl remain shocking. The film evokes a range of issues that have been critically debated: What is its placement in a more general auteurist treatment of Bergman? What is its influence on later rape-revenge films? How does it fit into a broader understanding of Swedish national cinema, or European art film in general? But while the film hinges around the rape and murder, that act more often than not is of critical interest only in how it functions in these more dominant debates. -

Jesse Kalin defines Bergman’s conception of the human condition as a struggle to find meaning in life as it is played out. For Bergman, meaning is achieved independently of any moral absolute and is the result of a process of self-examination. Six existential themes are explored repeatedly in Bergman’s films: judgment, abandonment, suffering, shame, a visionary picture, and above all, turning toward or away from others. Kalin examines how Bergman develops these themes cinematically, through close analysis of eight films: well-known favorites such as Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, and Fanny and Alexander; and im- portant but lesser-known works, such as Naked Night, Shame, Cries and Whispers, and Scenes from a Marriage. I Think You’ll Like It: An experimental film Self-Determined Major Final Project Proposal Major: Film Readers: Adam Tinkle, Rik Scarce 1 Intro/ Background Through my study of film-making, I have developed a personal affinity for abstract films and nontraditional uses of video as an artistic and abstract medium. Video is often seen as a way to portray an event in the most literal and ‘true-to-life’ way. In studying film studies and production though, I have learned first-hand that no video can be truly objective. Just as any medium is informed by the creator’s point of view and the story they wish to tell, all of the creative tools that a filmmaker can use to make a piece also impact the meaning based on their individual perspective and the influence of their ‘eye’ on the final product. In the abstract works that I have studied, this -wide fascination with telling truth is focused more on deeper and less traditionally observable truths. Films like Hiroshima, Mon Amour, At Land, and Fuses use video to tell truths of the mind, heart, and soul that might otherwise be inexpressible. The layered use of visual elements like color, texture, and imagery, combined with audio layering act as tools to express these truths artistically. The self expression and portrayal of different parts of human experience are immersive and beautiful because of their nontraditional nature in these experimental films. For my final project, I propose creating an experimental 10 minute short film: I Think You’ll Like It, which explores senses, color, and imagination.
