Stone This article places Nichiren within the context of three larger scholarly issues: definitions of the new Buddhist movements of the Kamakura period; the reception of the Tendai discourse of original enlightenment (hongaku) among the new Buddhist movements; and new attempts, emerging in the medieval period, to locate “Japan ” in the cosmos and in history. It shows how Nicmren has been represented as either politically conservative or rad ical, marginal to the new Buddhism or its paradigmatic figv/re, depending' upon which model of “Kamakura new Buddhism” is employed. It also shows how the question of Nichiren,s appropriation of original enlighten ment thought has been influenced by models of Kamakura Buddnism emphasizing the polarity between “old” and “new,institutions and sug gests a different approach. Lastly, it surveys some aspects of Nichiren ys thinking- about “Japan ” for the light they shed on larger, emergent medieval discourses of Japan relioiocosmic significance, an issue that cuts across the “old Buddhism,,/ “new Buddhism ” divide. A comprehensive overview would exceed the scope of one article. To provide some focus and also adumbrate the signifi cance of Nichiren studies to the broader field oi Japanese religions, I have chosen to consider Nichiren in the contexts of three larger areas of modern scholarly inquiry: “Kamakura new Buddhism,” its relation to Tendai original enlightenment thought, and new relisdocosmoloei- cal concepts of “Japan” that emerged in the medieval period. -

Revivalof RevivingSakyamuni's Buddhism and Nichiren'sView on the Lotus Sutra Nichiren (“ú˜@,1222-1282) respected Dengyo-Daishi Saicho (“`‹³‘åŽt•Å•Ÿ, 767-822), and he tried to map out a scheme for salvation, directly linking people to Sakyamuni Buddha, with the idea of 'Integrated Buddhism' by T'ien-t'ai Ta-shih Chih-i (“V‘ä‘åŽt’qûô, 538-597). Nichiren considered the line of teachers starting form the Buddha to Chih-i and then to Saicho (the Buddha Chih-i Saicho) as the lineage which transmitted the orthodox teaching of the Buddha, and he respected them as San-goku San-shi (ŽO•‘ŽlŽt, 'Three Teachers over the Three Countries' ). Later, he arrived at a conviction that he had established a foundation for the ten-thousand years of Mappo age (the Period of Degenerated Law,–––@, Saddharma-vipralopa), as he directly inherited the teaching of the three masters. Thus, he conveyed the con- viction to his followers, by mentioning the word San-goku Shi-shi (ŽO•‘ŽlŽt, 'Four Teachers over the Three Countries'), adding his own name to the end of the previous list. Though there are 700 years of temporal gap between Chih-i and Nichiren, Ni- chiren placed Chih-i's understanding of Buddhism at the base of his thought. Viewing it from formalistic standpoint, it may indicate that Nichiren inherited Tendai-Shu (“V‘ä•@). However, having the consciousness of honoring orthodox Tendai made him consider that Chib-i and Saicho were the inheritors of the Lotus Sutra only in Zobo age (the Period of Imitative Law, ‘œ–@, Saddharmapratirupaka). -
The Correct Teachings of Nichiren Shoshu
The Correct Teachings of Nichiren Shoshu Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, the Daimoku that we, as priests and lay believers of Nichiren Shoshu, chant every day, is the great Law that permeates the truth of the realm of the Law achieved by the fundamental Buddha, known as the Buddha with the property of intrinsically perfect wisdom (jijuyū hōshin nyorai), in the infinite past of kuon-ganjo. It transcends all concepts of time and space and our thought patterns as common mortals. This Daimoku functioned to reveal the fundamental Buddha in his original state (honchi) and to support Shakyamuni’s teaching of the Lotus Sutra 3,000 years ago in India, through Bodhisattva Jōgyō who emerged from the earth. Furthermore, when Nichiren Daishonin made his advent into this world as the True Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, he endured multiple, severe persecutions to propagate this Daimoku, based on his great compassion to enable all mankind to attain enlightenment. Thus, this Daimoku is not merely the title of the twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra. In Japan, there are many Buddhist sects and religious organizations other than Nichiren Shoshu that chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. However, these other groups have never been able to understand the true intent of Nichiren Daishonin and unfortunately have opposed him. Therefore, even though the Daimoku that they chant may sound identical to ours, it absolutely does not possess the inherent power to bring salvation to all the people. Nichiren Shoshu alone reveres Nichiren Daishonin as the True Buddha of the infinite past of kuon-ganjo. -

Nikko Shonin and Nanjo Tokimitsu 2011 Summer Study Tozan Group Lecture August 28, 2011 In 2009, the High Priest gave us the objective to carry out shakubuku toward increasing the membership of all countries by 50 percent by the year 2015, when we will celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 770th anniversary of the birth of Second High Priest Nikko Shonin. Hokkeko members all over the world are striving toward the achievement of this objective. Today, I would like to share my sermon titled “Nikko Shonin and Nanjo Tokimitsu,” in relation to the objective of the 770th anniversary of the birth of Nikko Shonin and the significance of repaying our debts of gratitude. As you may know, the residence of Nanjo Tokimitsu was established in 1324, almost 680 years ago. Later, it became Myorenji Temple, named in honor of the Buddhist name of his wife, Myoren. The graves of both parents of Nanjo Tokimitsu, Nanjo Hyo’e Shichiro and his wife, Myoho-ama, still remain. They are located just more than a half mile south of Myorenji Temple. Every year on May 1, the anniversary of Nanjo Tokimitsu’s passing; all the priests of Myorenji Temple and believers in the neighborhood visit his grave and pay their respects. On March 8, 1265, the father of Tokimitsu, Hyo’e Shichiro, passed away and was buried in the Nanjo family cemetery. That same year, Nichiren Daishonin personally traveled here to the Ueno area, all the way from Kamakura, to visit Hyo’e Shichiro’s grave. Nichiren Daishonin stated the following in the Gosho, “In Celebration of Spring”: I was deeply grieved to hear of the death of Hyo’e Shichiro who was a man in his prime. -
The Atsuhara Affair: the Lotus Sutra, Persecution, and Religious Identity

Stone The Atsuhara Affair TheLotus Sutra, Persecution, and Religious Identity in the Early Nichiren Tradition In 1279, twenty peasants who were lay followers of the Buddhist teacher Nichiren were summarily arrested at Atsuhara in the Fuji district of Suruga province and were sent for trial to Kamakura, where three of them were beheaded. This incident is known in the history of Nichiren Buddhism as the Atsuhara persecution. The first part of this article outlines the circumstances of the persecution and the political and religious tensions that fueled it and considers how Nichiren was able to persuade his followers to remain steadfast in the face of a grave threat. The second part examines links between Nichiren’s interpretation of the persecution and larger themes in his teaching of exclusive devotion to the Lotus Sutra, especially that offering one’s life for the sutra’s sake guarantees one’s attainment of buddhahood. Lastly, the article touches on how later accounts of the Atsuhara persecution shaped a normative ideal within the Nichiren tradition of how Lotus devotees should meet opposition from those in power. keywords: Lotus Sutra—Atsuhara—Nichiren—Nikkō—persecution—martyrdom Jacqueline I. Lecture in Praise of Nichiren Daishonin November 2015, Oko Lecture Nikko Shonin and His Strict and Solemn Attitude in Faith This year marks the 770th anniversary of the birth of Second High Priest Nikko Shonin. At Head Temple Taisekiji, commemorative ceremonies were held for several days on and around March 8th, the day of his birth. Moreover, a special commemorative exhibition is being held until December at the Treasure Hall. Throughout this year, there has been an increased enthusiasm to repay our debt of gratitude to Nikko Shonin In the second year of Shōka (1258), when Nikko Shonin was 13 years of age, he became Nichiren Daishonin’s disciple. Thereafter, he continued to serve Nichiren Daishonin, even when he was exiled to Izu and Sado. Like a shadow following the body, Nikko Shonin constantly followed his master and sincerely developed faith, based on the master-disciple relationship. Nichiren Daishonin had many skilled disciples, but Nikko Shonin was the only one who truly was able to understand his master’s mind and heart. Therefore, Nichiren Daishonin, at the time of his entry into nirvana, states: I, Nichiren, transfer the entirety of the Law that I have propagated throughout my life to Byakuren Ajari Nikko, and designate him the Great Master of Propagation of the Essential Teaching. (Gosho, p. 1675) And he further states: I transfer Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings of fifty years to Byakuren Ajari Nikko. He is to be the chief priest of Minobu-san Kuonji Temple. (ibid.) Thus, Nichiren Daishonin designated Nikko Shonin as the Great Master of propagation of the essential teaching and transferred the entirety of his Buddhism to him. -

Thank you for the support that you have given me. ii ABSTRACT While the historical and religious roots of kaji kito (“ritual prayer”) lay in Indian and Chinese Esoteric Buddhist practices, the most direct influence of kaji kito in Nichiren Shu Buddhism, a Japanese Buddhist sect founded by the Buddhist monk, Nichiren (1222-1282), comes from Shingon and Tendai Buddhism, two traditions that precede Nichiren’s time. -
