New York GAA Games Development Newsletter February 2020 County Squads Over the last number of weeks try outs have been taking place for our ve underage teams heading back to Ireland this summer. They include U14 Feile Hurling, U14 Feile Girl’s football, U14 Feile Boys football, U16 ladies football and U16 boy’s football. All New York All Star teams are only allowed to take 24 players, this means there will be a lot of tough choices to make. However the club Spring season is just around the corner and as long as you keep playing Gaelic Games, their are lots of opportunities to represent New York in the future. Good luck to all of our County underage teams, do your best and that’s all anyone can ever ask. Best of luck to the New York Senior ladies and New York Senior Men’s football teams training away the last few months as well. “A massive thank you to each and every girl that tried out for the U14 New York Ladies football team this year. We had a fantastic number at try outs and an even better standard of talent by all the players. Unfortunately some very dicult decisions were made, as we are only able to take a panel of 24 with us. If 2020 wasn’t your year, please don’t get too disheartened - there will be more opportunities to play and represent your club and county in the future. The team and management are very excited for the hard work that will be happening over the next few months. We are going to give Division 1 Feile Football a real rattle!” U14 Feile Ladies Management 2020 The New York U14 Feile Boys football team with brilliant numbers at their rst few try outs. New York College’s ‘First Ever Win’ “If you never lose, you never appreciate the victories”. The New York Colleges team made a massive stride in the right direction this year at the Corn Mac Leinn Division 3 All Ireland Higher Education Championships, reaching the rst ever nal. The New York College’s team faced Cavan IT in the rst semi nal on Friday 7th February in DCU. Cavan IT with a lot more games under their belt, coming out of the group stages and a well fought Quarter nal win against Ulster University, Magee - who have made the weekend the last 4 years. The New York team made up of lads that have all came up through the underage program fought right from the throw in. Cavan IT proved to be very athletic down the middle of their line out, luckily New York had answers for them in the shape of Tiarnan Mathers and captain, Shane Slattery. Kevin Raerty at number 6 was causing alot of problem for the Cavan men, providing a lot of link up play, and a few hard hits courtesy of his brother on the wing, Shane. Unfortunately New York lost veteran Ryan O’Neill from Rangers 15 minutes into the game, however Paidi Mathers was on hand, to stick tight to the Cavan’s number 14, and stick tight he did. Half time saw New York a point down, 2.2 to 1.4 - except with a breeze on their backs for the second half. Danny Corridan sweeping proved too much Cavan IT to handle, and Mikey Brosnan and Kevin Loane were in their element. With 10 minutes to go, both sides score for score, however Gerry Loane’s men learnt a lot from the competition over the last two visits. A lot of composure and character had been built into this year, thanks to the hard work of trainer Johnny McGeaney and the NY lads were able to hold on 2.9 to 2.8. The result, saw New York’s rst win the Corn Mac Leinn competition against a very good Cavan IT side - many of which had a number of county minors on the team. New York were going to their rst ever Division 3 All Ireland Higher Education nal the next day against John Moore’s, Liverpool - who defeated Southern Regional College by a point in the other semi nal. The 2020 New York College Team and Management. Johnny McGeaney, Kevin Loane, Ryan O’Neill, Adam Power, James Breen, Sean Corridan, Dylan Curran, Gearoid Kennedy, Tiarnan Mathers, Shane Slattery, Shane Raerty, Caolain Mathers, Sean Moore, Martin Loane, Kevin Raerty, Paidi Mathers, Mike Brosnan (Top Row L-R). Gerry Loane, Colin Mathers, Shane Doheny, Aidan Connolly, Danny Corridan, Peter Cronin, Dylan Grace, Conor Mathers, Pat Murray, PJ King, Mikey Brosnan, Kevin Moriarty (Bottow Row L-R). New York College’s ‘Just Fell Short’ The New York College’s team faced John Moore’s of Liverpool in the All Ireland Division 3 Higher Education Championship nal. John Moore’s made up of a lot players from Ulster counties including Derry, Down, Armagh and Fermanagh. New York had a big task to do, but all players and management were ready. The nal took place on Saturday 8th February on a very windy DCU turf pitch - which both teams were used to training on. Against the breeze in the rst half and after the worst possible start going a goal down in 30 seconds, it was the kick that New York needed. Caolain Mathers was in good form winning a lot of kick outs, perfectly delivered from number 1 Gearoid Kennedy. James Breen, Dylan Curran and Peter Cronin were all solid in the backs. Against a massive breeze, the lads in white had turned around a diabolical start, draw game 1.3 to 0.6 With condence high in the second half, it was John Moore’s that set up tactically better - all 14 men in their own half, a fortress for NY to break down. Despite the best eorts of Conor Mathers and Sean Moore, nothing seemed to go right for them. Sometimes wasteful in possession and sometimes the bounce of the ball just went against them. Liverpool were clever when the had the ball, forced the fouls to come and take NY to their rules. A fairy tale for the lads that traveled 3000 miles that just never happened, as they lost 0.8 to 3.4. Every single player can hold their head up high, everyone back home has every reason to be proud of them. They played with passion, pride and heart every minute in every game. Progress has denitely been made and the All Ireland Higher Education is just pending for now. The New York team... to be in a rst ever All Ireland Higher Education Division 3 Final. Both captains at the toss, just before the game. NY’s Kevin Loane closes in! NYMB Dinner Dance The Dinner Dance is a time to appreciate and commend the grassroots of our organization - our kids. Our players from all the clubs across the State of New York put endless hours of work in throughout the year, both o and on the eld. The night is a huge night for them. We award our MVP’s, Championship Captains, CYC Captains, New York League Champions, Players of the Year, Feile teams, Memorial tournament winners, Scholarship winners and Scor winners. Majority of our players start from U8, right up to U18 before making the transition to adult football and Hurling. These will be the members that we will hope will give back to their club and county. From starting o playing to refereeing, coaching, taking up a committee position to perhaps one day representing New York Senior is their respected Hurling and Football championships. We want to hold onto the loyalty they have shown New York so far, so they can go the full circle and give back when they get older. Scór na Óg 2020 What a fantastic night of Club Spirit, Irish Culture and Stage Talent at Scór na Óg on Saturday 29th Feb. St Barnabas was alive with Irish Culture as over 100 talented children from Celtics, St Brigid’s, St Barnabas, Rangers, Rockland, Shannon Gaels and Sperrin Og’s. The stage was packed with talent and the hall was full with family and friends, enjoying every second of it. Our four wonderful judges, Marie Barrett, Jo Kinsella, Anne Marie Accosta and Toby Kavanagh had a very dicult job with such a high standard of talent across the board. Fr Brendan was the glue of our evening keeping everyone entertained while weaving through our competitions and performances and we are all so grateful to the team at St Barnabas for hosting Scór na Óg New York 2020. Scór na Óg New York wouldn’t have happened without so many people and the support of the entire New York GAA community from the New York Senior, Ladies, Minor and G4G boards, to all our clubs and their Scor Ocers, parents and volunteers.
