INTRODUCTION The Hymenophyllaceae, or ‘filmy ferns’, is the largest basal family of leptosporangiate ferns and comprises around 600 species (Iwatsuki, 1990). Members are easily distin- guished by their usually single-cell-thick laminae, and the monophyly of the family has not been questioned. The intrafamilial classification of the family, on the other hand, is highly controversial – several fundamentally different classifications are used by indi- vidual researchers and/or areas. Traditionally, only two genera – Hymenophyllum with bivalved involucres and Trichomanes with tubular involucres – have been recognized in this family. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong.

This is a particularly difficult time for botanists4 who look forward to spending time in the field during the season. At the time of writing it is uncertain whether any field meetings will be able to take place this year. The latter 5 parts of some of the usual programmes are included here, but members are advised3 to check the website or ask vice-county recorders for up-to-date in- formation. This applies also to outreach and any indoor meetings that may have been planned. We simply don’t know at present whether it may be pos- sible to hold some meetings later in the year, and a few may be offered at short notice if regulations are relaxed.

NITTA Department of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 USA Abstract. Ferns present an interesting case in island biogeography because of their unusually high dispersal ability. A general survey of the filmy ferns (Hymenophyllaceae) of Moorea, French Polynesia was undertaken by observing distribution in the field, conducting tests of desiccation tolerance, and inferring a phylogeny based on morphological characters. A total of 12 filmy fern species (including three species previously unreported in the literature for Moorea) were found to occur in moist, well- covered habitats throughout the island, with distinct sets of high elevation and low elevation species. Five species were included in an experiment to determine relative degree of desiccation tolerance; results indicate that terrestrial species have lower desiccation tolerance than epiphytic or epipetric species. In order to place the Moorea filmy ferns in the larger archipelago context, eight additional Society Island species were included in the phylogeny for a total of 20 taxa based on 21 morphological characters; interspecies relationships reflect the taxonomy of Hymenophyllaceae sensu lato. Filmy fern species are widely dispersed throughout the Society Islands, and there is no indication of an adaptive radiation on Moorea. Labiak in Europe is reported for the first time. A small population was discovered on two boulders beside a stream in Atlantic oak woodland in the Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry, in southwest Ireland. The main identification features of this taxa and features that distinguish it from other similar taxa are laid out and discussed. S. myosuroides is elsewhere known to occur in the Neotropics, in Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, and is thought to have colonised its Irish site through long-distance spore dispersal. Two Grammitid species of similar ecology have been discovered in the Azores in the past five decades and a number of bryophyte species share a similar disjunct distribution between Ireland and the Neotropics, all of which supports the theory that long-distance dispersal is the most plausible explanation for the occurrence of S. myosuroides in Ireland. It is not clear how long S. myosuroides has been present in Ireland, although morphological differences suggest that it may have been separated from the Neotropical populations for a long period.
