President’s Report

It is my pleasure to present you with my report for the Waikato Badminton Association for 2018.

Waikato Badminton has been under a board structure for a few years now and from my perspective the structure is working very well. The board meet about every six weeks (more frequently if required.) Communication is open and honest and quite frequently via an email thread. Discussions are thorough, and decisions are usually reached within a reasonable timeframe.

An effective board is a group of individuals who have a range of skills and:

▪ a group who meet regularly to look at the performance and strategic progress of the organisation ▪ at least one independent board member (for us that is Alison Storey) and other board members (executive directors), ▪ a group who can separate themselves from the day-to-day operations and take a birds-eye view of the business/organisation (strategic thinkers) ▪ a group who can debate the difficult issues and come out with a clear decision for the future of the organisation ▪ ultimately, a group who guides, and is committed to the organisation

What another full year is has been for WBA. We’ve had some outstanding results from our junior and senior members and some of the most outstanding results are below:

• Oliver and Susannah Leydon-Davis representing NZ at the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast • Wisden Cup team winning Division 1 • Slazenger Cup bronze medal • Adam Jeffrey winner of the Australian Junior International Mixed Doubles • Tracey Hallam winning triple gold at the NZ Masters Nationals Championships • Ben Perkinson winning the North and South Island U19 Mixed Doubles titles • Division 4 team placed second • Victoria Guo (U13) runner up at the AIMS GAMES (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) • Erena Calder-Hawkins silver medal Women’s Doubles at the New Zealand National Championships • Adam Jeffrey silver medal at the New Zealand National U19 Championships (My apologies if I have missed anyone.)

These are the players who performed well, and they thoroughly deserve all the recognition they receive. The saying that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ can also be said for every successful competitor in sport. Like the players above, we have individuals who make sacrifices to support the sport they are dedicated to. People such as coaches, managers, team captains, parents, families, court officials, court sweepers, club volunteers, supporters, WBA staff, life members, sponsors, patron, maintenance crew, junior convenor, funders, business partners, board members, and players who all offer their time, skill, expertise and camaraderie to WBA. Without these people the growth and development of any sport would not be possible. The achievements above are to be enjoyed and celebrated by each and every one of us.

We also acknowledge the players who train and compete at club level through to international events because everyone has something to contribute to our wonderful sport.

There has never been a better time As we’ll all be aware TJ, Doriana and family are leaving us early in 2019, the changes that have occurred during TJ’s tenure have been exponential at administration and player achievement level. Waikato Badminton owes a great deal to TJ for his dedication, resourcefulness, determination, and creativity to increase the profile of our sport, so it can grow in the greater Waikato area. The funding and sponsorship we currently attract can largely be attributed to the relationships TJ has built and the achievements of the players listed above are also a testament to TJ’s (ground)work.

With the platform TJ has created, there has never been a better time to be involved in Waikato Badminton as there has been growth year on year. As we welcome Marianne Loh as the new CEO, we need to remember that change can be a good thing. With our support behind Marianne we can all enjoy continued growth in our chosen recreational sport.

Marianne will also have the continued support of our administration team who do a wonderful job. Tracey Hallam is coaching all levels of ability and ages (yes even a few +50-year olds), her calm, patient approach puts the most inexperienced and perhaps less athletic players at ease. Tracey has vast international playing experience and a substantial skill set, her knowledge is something we can all tap into, we only get out what we are willing to put in.

Vinny Harris has taken on the role of Schools & Events Manager where he coordinates and runs competitions, tournaments and is our Shuttle Time Coordinator. Vinny organises tournaments including all our school aged based events, Interclub, inter association, National and International events. Vinny’s happy outgoing personality makes him the ideal person for this role- making it fun for everyone.

Loloma Foster is our longest employee and the rock in our administration team. Loloma’ s knowledge base and experience will be a great asset to Marianne as she transitions into her new role while TJ has also offered to stay on for a period of three weeks to assist with a very thorough handover.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Doreen Wood who agreed to be our patron. Doreen is often seen court side supporting our teams and makes it along to our board meetings on a regular basis.

To conclude I would like to say one final BIG thankyou to TJ for all his efforts, he has truly set WBA up in a prime position for continued expansion and development. I am sure we all wish TJ, Doriana and family every success, happiness, and fulfilment in their next chapter.

Stu Morgan (WBA President)

Chief Executive Officer Report

It is with great pleasure as well as sadness to hereby present the CEO report based on the 2017 / 2018 financial year and the 2018 season. It’s a pleasure because the WBA continues to be in great shape both on and off the court and at the same time I’m writing this with a very heavy heart knowing this will be my last annual report as I’m leaving this wonderful organisation after nearly 15 years having had various roles.

In 2004, Doriana and I, were very fortunate to arrive in the land of the long white cloud and in particular the mighty Waikato. Hamilton quickly became our new home and the support we have received throughout the years from the Badminton community has been nothing short of incredible. We were received with open arms and new friends quickly became like family. It is the main reason why we never looked back and are extremely proud to say that today we are New Zealand citizens and are grateful for having two wonderful Kiwi children who know the in and outside of the Waikato Badminton stadium and many other for that matter all too well.

Without turning my report into an emotional piece of poetry I would like to use this opportunity to thank some people who really need to be mentioned because they have played a very important part in our NZ journey so far:

First of all, the Icke Family. The late Peter Icke who brought us to New Zealand and who had the vision to turn Waikato Badminton into a stronghold in New Zealand. Without Peter, we and Waikato Badminton would not be where it is today, and I sincerely hope his legend will live on forever. Peter’s wife Jenny who has become such a great family friend and Peter’s son David and his wife Louisa who are very close friends. David of course also led the WBA as president after his father’s passing. David still continues to support the WBA through his business every year.

Philip and Pauline Paterson, two amazing people who have opened their home to our family on so many occasions. They are the “Kiwi” grandparents to our kids and very close friends. We can impossibly give back everything they have done for us. Philip has and still is one of the biggest Badminton supporters I have ever met and the countless hours he has poured into Badminton is incredible. His support to me during his years as WBA President has been phenomenal and I’m so grateful for his time, his listening ear and his passion.

The Leydon-Davis family for supporting my family, for opening up their home and for allowing me to cause chaos within their family logistics when I started coaching in 2004 with my new ideas and coaching schedules and fully supporting it even though there must have been plenty of occasions when they quietly wished I’d go away with my crazy ideas. Families like the Leydon-Davis always gave me the belief that the WBA and I were on the right and if it wasn’t for their ability to see the benefits, my job would have been a lot more difficult.

The Stapleton’s who, in especially our early years as young parents, were always there to give a helping hand looking after our daughter and for opening up their home to us without hesitation on so many occasions. When settling into a new country these are the things one will remember, and which makes the start of a new life and journey so much easier.

To the late Pat Dallinger MBE for her relentless support and enthusiasm. To Doreen Wood, WBA Life Member and current WBA Patron for her passion and support. To Alicia Urlich for her love and generosity. To Jackie and Ray Downs for their friendship and always being there for us when needed. To Tracey Hallam, Vinny Harris and Felicity Leydon-Davis for being awesome staff members, great baby-sitters and for helping my family out so often at the very last minute. To Maurice Smith for his passion and commitment to Badminton and for always being there to do repairs and maintenance with the help of Mike Perkinson and Dwayne Irwin who also pour in so many volunteer hours without asking anything in return. To Loloma Foster for being a very inspiring person and for being one of the most reliable persons I know. Her energy and work ethic are incredible, and the WBA is so very lucky to have had her service for over 20 years already.

To Sheree Hart and her family for opening up their homes and for supporting our journey in NZ. To Jeff Stuthridge, his family and business for supporting Waikato Badminton and for always being available to help when we needed it. To Luke Lee for his personal and business support to the WBA and for growing the Badminton Business Network through his passion for Badminton. To the Rose family for their support to Waikato Badminton and for Kirsten’s many years of service to our junior programme. To the Jensen’s during their two-year adventure here in New Zealand, the team at Sport Waikato, Matthew Cooper, Roseanne Murray, Michelle Hollands and many more for their support to Waikato Badminton. Sport Waikato do an amazing job at supporting and enabling sport and I have personally greatly valued their knowledge, expertise and passion for sport. To Joe Hitchcock and the current team at Badminton New Zealand and all previous Badminton NZ staff members, for their passion and ability to bring the Badminton community together, for growing the sport and for their support to Waikato Badminton.

To all the clubs and all volunteers, it is incredible how all of you find time and energy time after time to provide opportunities to thousands of people, so they can participate in the game we all love so much. It is your hard work that keeps the Badminton community together.

To everybody that I may have forgotten to give a personal mention, please know that I value each and every one of you. Thanks for everything and although we are heading to the dark side (Australia) for a few years, we will be back!

Last but certainly not least, I’m very excited about the appointment of Marianne Loh as new Chief Executive. Marianne comes with a wealth of knowledge from years of commitment and dedication to Badminton. Her leadership skills, great sense of humour and passion will be an enormous asset to Waikato Badminton as the organisation looks to write the next chapter in WBA’s growth and development. I wish Marianne all the very best and will follow with excitement the developments of the WBA.

“The Winning Point” – Wisden Cup Title 2018

Director of Coaching Annual Report

It’s my pleasure to hereby provide an overview of the 2018 season in which we had some great success and some challenges which provides opportunity and motivation to do even better in 2019.

The first senior tournament of the year was the North Harbour International where we saw our High performance and a couple of the Elite squad compete. Some tough men’s singles for our players Vinny Harris’ ranking enabled him to be seeded where he reached the 3rd round. It was great to have Oliver Leydon-Davis return to be part of the series of tournaments during this period and at the North Harbour International Oliver and partner Kevin Dennerly-Minturn managed to come through and win this tournament. The Women’s Doubles saw the new partnership of Susannah Leydon-Davis and Sally Fu reaching the finals losing out to a strong Australian partnership. It also saw Erena reach the semi-final with her partner Jasmine Ng from Auckland where they lost out to Sally and Susannah. Erena also reached the ¼ finals with Edward Lau from NH.

It was great to have a number of Waikato players being selected to represent New Zealand in the Thomas and Uber Cup Qualifiers in Hamilton, those selected where Oliver, Susannah, Erena and a very late call up to an injury sustained during the NH International was Michael Fowke.

Following this was the Oceania Championships Individual event. I think the best part about this was that as it was held in Hamilton which meant a number of our Elite squad players could enter and gain some valuable International experience. Matthew Graham and Vinny Harris reached the ¼ finals of the Men’s Doubles along with Jasmanjot Virk and Ben Perkinson. Erena Calder Hawkins lost in the ¼ Women’s Doubles, a result that was reversed during the senior Nationals in Wellington later in the season. In the Mixed Doubles Ben Perkinson and Ella Smith (Southland) reached the ¼ final and Oliver and Susannah Leydon-Davis reached the Semi Final losing to top seeds and (AUS)

At the Senior National Championships in Wellington Vinny Harris reached the Semi Final, Jasmanjot Virk and Matthew Graham reached the ¼ final. In the Men’s Doubles Chris Steeghs and Daxxon Vong reached the ¼ final making tough work of another Waikato pair being Jack Boyle and Adam Jeffrey. Erena and Jasmine Ng (AKL) had a great performance in the Semi Final reversing the result as previously mentioned against Sally Fu (AKL) and Alyssa Tagle (NH) therefore making it through to the final. Again, some of our Elite Squad made the trip down to Wellington gaining some valuable experience for themselves, these were Lily Rose, Adam Jeffrey and Ben Perkinson.

Waikato U19’s saw Adam Jeffrey reach the semi-final of singles and doubles losing to eventual winner Dacmen Vong in the singles. Lily Rose and Southland partner Ella Smith making it to semi- final. Mixed saw 3 Waikato players in the final with the title going to Ben Perkinson and Ella Smith (Southland) who beat Adam Jeffrey and Lily Rose.

June Bevan Trophy / Australasian U17 Championships – Amreen Virk represented the Northern New Zealand Team which finished 3rd overall.

NH Open, Big highlight was that Chris Steeghs won the Men’s doubles with partner Riga Oud (AKL) Chris also made the ¼ final of the Mixed with partner Tamara Otene (NH). Erena Calder Hawkins also made the ¼ finals with partner Jonathan Curtin (AKL) losing to the eventual winners. Chris coming away with Waikato’s first senior doubles title of the year.

New Zealand Open – tough opposition so most players played qualifying or 1st round main draw, this also had the new service rule which the majority of players struggled with.

Auckland U15’s, Victoria Guo achieved the best result reaching the semi-final.

U15 Central Region Brittany Marais reach the semi-final of singles and doubles ¼ final of mixed. Her sister Danika also made the semi-finals of the singles in the U19 event.

Auckland U19 Deveal Wijaya and Lily Rose made it to the 1/4 final beating a very good U17 pair. Adam Jeffrey made the final of the boy’s doubles with Ryan Tong (AKL)

Central Region U17 – Amreen Virk won the Girls singles in this event.

Counties Manukau Open – Jasmanjot Virk reached the semi-finals beating Matthew Graham in the quarter finals. Also featuring in the ¼ Finals was Vinny Harris. Chris Steeghs won the doubles with Jonathan Curtin (AKL) they beat Jack Boyle and Adam Jeffrey in the semi-final. Also in the Semi-final was Vinny Harris and partner Kevin Zhang (AKL)

North Harbour U19 – Adam Jeffrey reached the final of the boy’s singles and the semi-final of the mixed with Catelyn Rozario (NH)

U19 Nationals –Adam has a great performance and went on to reach the final of the doubles with Ryan Tong (AKL) winning a silver medal. Adam also reached the ¼ finals of the singles. Good performance also by Ben Perkinson in the Boy’s singles beating a seeded player to go on to reach the ¼ finals. Ben also reached the ¼ finals in the mixed with partner Ella Smith (STH) and the ¼ finals of the doubles losing out to Adam Jeffrey, Lily Rose and Ella Smith (STH) went to win the girl’s doubles plate.

AIMS Games – Victoria Guo made the final of the singles in this event. Just losing out in the final.

Wellington Open – Vinny Harris the only Waikato making the long journey to Wellington winning Waikato’s first Senior singles title.

In team events this year, I was pleased that we were able to have a team represented in each age group at the Yonex New Zealand Team Championships. The placings were as follows:-

U13 – 6th overall

U15 – 5th

U17 – 2nd Division 2, 10th Overall.

U19 – 6th.

I would say that the best team event results of the year were achieved at the Wisden & Slazenger Cup. The Wisden Team beat North Harbour in the final which was the second time of asking after losing to them in the group stage winning gold with team members TJ Weistra, Oliver Leydon-Davis, Michael Fowke, , Erena Calder Hawkins, Justine Villegas and myself. Unfortunately, with Susannah Leydon-Davis being injured since the Commonwealth Games, she was unable to play however we kept Susannah involved and had her in a Managerial role for both teams. I think that most of the players who had played this event in its previous format preferred the new format set up as it created better quality matches.

The Slazenger Cup team finished third winning a bronze medal which in many ways was an even greater achievement than winning Wisden Cup considering the average age of the players in our team and having two very young players in Joanna Li (14) and Amreen Virk (15). The other team members were Doriana Rivera, Jahvaya Wheki, Lily Rose, Chris Steeghs, Jack Boyle, Jasmanjot Virk, Vincent Harris and Matthew Graham. The team got a crucial and unexpected win over North Harbour.

Division 4 – With two teams in this division it was good to see that both were competitive with Waikato 3 coming 2nd in the division being closely followed by Waikato 4 in 3rd position. The players seemed very motivated throughout this year and with the addition of a couple of players it enabled them both to finish in the top half of the table. It would be great for one of the teams to gain promotion during the 2019 season.

Asia Pacific Trophy – Adam Jeffrey was selected to represent New Zealand in this event. Adam and his team came forth in the team event. Adam reached the semi-final of the singles, and boy’s doubles however he won the mixed doubles with Roanne Apolisok (AKL) which was Adam’s best result to date and a great confidence boost.

Three of our High-Performance players went to recent tournaments in Australia, there was tough opposition however again no doubt valuable experience would have been gained.

U13 National’s - eight U13 players travelled to the Hawkes Bay to participate in the U13 Nationals. The majority staying at Napier Boys High School where two meals a day were provided.

At this event seven of the eight players played on the last day in various plates, the highlight on the last day was that the girls singles consolation plate was all Waikato between Ellen Liu and Ruby Paterson, Ruby coming out on top. The girl’s doubles plate was also an all Waikato affair this time Ellen Liu and Katie Li coming out on top over Ayla Strauss and Ruby Paterson. Ethan Hu won the boys Singles consolation plate and Aveer Virk and Kevin Li won the boys doubles plate final.

U15 Nationals Waitakere, tough competition experienced here however we had Joanna Li reach the ¼ finals of the singles, she beat a seeded player to reach the ¼’s. Kevin Li reached the final of the Classic plate final which was good for as he is still U13. Victoria Guo also got to the final of the plate. Victoria and Joanna reached the ¼’s of the girls doubles. Victoria and partner Isaac Li from Waitakere reached the ¼’s of the mixed doubles.

U17 Nationals, Auckland – Again very tough competition here for our players. Amreen Virk reached her seeded spot of the ¼ finals playing very well throughout the singles. In the girl’s doubles Danika Marais and Joy Guo reached the ¼ finals of the doubles but were so close to making a semi-final appearance but this was not to be this year. Having been so close they are motivated to push on for next year. Amreen Virk and Southland partner Claudia Smith reached the final of the girl’s doubles plate.

U19 Badminton New Zealand Selection Camp where Waikato was represented by Adam Jeffrey, Ben Perkinson, Joanna Li and Amreen Virk. At the time of writing this report, we do not know if any of these players have been successful at gaining a place on the main Badminton New Zealand Camp in Napier in January.

U15 Badminton New Zealand Selection Camp in this age group Waikato have 5 players invited along to this. Victoria Guo, Andy Zhou, Kevin Li, Aveer Virk and Aaron Wan. Again, at the time of writing this report we do not know if any of these players have been successful at gaining a place on the main Badminton New Zealand Camp in Napier in January.

Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone within Waikato Badminton for what they have done throughout the year to make Waikato Badminton what it is which includes all Board Members, players, parent helpers, managers, volunteers and staff members. Hope I haven’t forgotten anyone.

Lastly, I would like to Thank TJ for his leadership to the organisation and wish Doriana and himself all the very best. Also, a big Welcome to Marianne. Out with the old in with the new .

Schools & Events Manager Annual Report

This year has been a massive learning experience for me in the role of Schools and Events Manager. Since beginning in the role in April, I have done work that is new, exciting and fulfilling. Felicity, the previous Schools and Events Manager, left me in a great position and was helpful in getting me started – I am thankful for the work she put in before heading overseas. I have been supported immensely by the other workers at WBA and by coaches that are keen to help out at the schools whenever I could not make it, which I am also thankful for. I now have an appreciation and understand how events are run and I am keen to learn more about this aspect of the job, with the coming up in 2019.

Schools:

This year has shown a small decrease in numbers in comparison to previous years. I am of the opinion that this is due to the newly introduced (small) cost to schools having Shuttle Time sessions facilitated. A charge of $1 per primary/intermediate school student and $2 per secondary school student has been included recently in New Zealand, which logistically makes sense, but has resulted in a decrease in participation. There have also been a few schools that booked for some weeks in Terms 2 and 3 but had clashes coming up which led to cancelations. In Term 2, I spent three weeks in Taupo running badminton in the schools in the area. Having had little experience in running Shuttle Time sessions, this was an important time for me to get comfortable with how the programme is run and how children operate and react to doing different exercises that relate to badminton. Throughout the three weeks, I gained confidence with what I was doing and enjoyed working with the teachers and children. I learned more about my own coaching style and how to engage different kinds of people into exploring things outside of their comfort zones.

Some schools in the Waikato region where we ran very successful sessions were St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Forest View High School (Tokoroa).

St. Joseph’s booked in for many sessions, which eventuated to 908 primary and intermediate students getting involved with badminton. Each student participated in three Shuttle Time sessions which was a progression through the basics of badminton, including grips, net shots and some overhead stuff. The teachers were great to work with as they all got involved and enjoyed the time outside. The deputy principle, Tracy Svendsen, was supportive throughout the process as well, with a few of the days having to be postponed due to weather.

Forest View High School in Tokoroa got involved with Shuttle Time through their librarian, Lyndsay Coffin, who has played badminton in the Waikato region for many years and runs the Tokoroa Badminton Day Club. We booked in for four sessions after school with the badminton team in preparation for the South Waikato Secondary School competition. The students were responsive and keen to engage in the exercises, as they were new to being coached in this sort of setting. After the competition had finished, the school came back to me and asked to be involved with an NCEA standard assessment of performing a smash shot, so I went in two more times and helped a PE class with performing the new skills. There was a huge improvement over a short period of time and the students were great to work with.

Over Term 4 we were booked in to run Shuttle Time at Waikato Diocesan and Rototuna Junior High School. Dio have asked for coaching of two PE classes over a month-long period. This is ample time to go through the basics of shot performance as well as bringing into play the tactical aspect. The girls have all played a little bit of badminton and the teachers are confident that they will be able to progress through the sessions with relatively strong ability. Rototuna Junior High have booked in for two sessions every Monday afternoon out at The Peak. This has become a common occurrence over the last two years and the newly established school have been a massive contributor to the Waikato Secondary School competition this year. The plan is to select two groups based on ability and facilitate the sessions accordingly to the level of players involved, teaching them not only technical aspects but also rules, and tactics to be able to compete within a competitive setting.

The secondary schools’ competitions in Thames Valley, South Waikato and King Country were the successes of the season. Over the three events there were 60 teams comprising of 4 players per team, meaning 240 secondary school students from the wider Waikato region had the chance to play badminton in these events. I do not have specific numbers, but a show of hands at each event showed that about 80% of these students had never played badminton before. This was enlightening to have the opportunity to manage and be a part of this experience for so many Waikato students and everybody seemed to enjoy the days. The teachers were of great importance as they helped manage courts and the students were all self-sufficient in organising their own matches and making the most of the chance to play a new sport.

In hindsight, badminton in Waikato schools is still in a great space and children around the area are still getting involved with the sport. The inclusion of a charge for each student has been a slight setback but looking forward to the year I believe that there is opportunity to get into contact with schools before the end of the year and organise for Shuttle Time delivery around the Waikato in 2019. Feedback from the schools was positive in that the programme was said to be very engaging for students of all abilities within the same class, it was great for simple hand-eye coordination, and the children could all experience success in each session.

Summary of Numbers reached in schools (as at 21/09/2018):

Total number of Shuttle Time sessions delivered: 280 Primary School students reached: 6218 Secondary School students reached: 629 Total Individual students reached: 6847

Events:

ABCD Championships had an increase in numbers from last year, with 129 entries. The day included badminton at all levels in a competitive spirit and there was a good turnout of people watching as well. The timing was also better than last year, as we finished up early in the evening.

The u15 Local Derby was held at WBA, and TJ was here to run the day as I was in Wellington playing in the NZ Tertiary Championships.

The interclub competitions brought many people together from around the Waikato region to enjoy our beautiful sport, to enjoy competition and to enjoy each other’s company. The first round (B grade, C grade and Russ Proctor) consisted of 17 teams, with 120 players overall playing badminton on Tuesday evenings. The second round (Presidents and Dallinger Cups) includes 13 teams consisting of 127 players. Throughout the season I have been reminded of how great it is to have a team atmosphere running through the hall. Having Interclub on a fixed night in our Eastlink venue has been a great success for the majority of teams.

Glow in the Dark badminton was again another weekend of fun. Having the University of Waikato Halls of Residence come in and play on the Friday evening was great because the teams were all comfortable with each other and competition between the groups was not hard to create. Everybody was thoroughly engaged and enjoyed the experience. Having this relationship with the UoW is healthy for us as an association as we have players that study there and to continue this relationship could be of benefit to both parties. We also had an open event for the community to enter teams. This night was showed fewer numbers to last year but those that came still got to enjoy the experience – some of these teams having played last year and wanting to give it another crack!

The Shuttle Time Non-Rep tournaments were a success for the events space. 205 players have entered in the first 4 events accumulatively.

The Waikato International 2019 us an exciting event coming up next year. Personally, it will be a new experience for me, being involved with the running of an international tournament, and it will also be with the new CEO. TJ has always been a driven and helpful character in running any kind of competition, so it will also be new for me to not have him around doing what he does.

Other events we hosted were the Tui Medical Waikato and North Island u19 Open and the Tui Medical u15 Open.

This year we had four teams travel to Palmerston North for the Team Championships in three vans, and a number of private vehicles. Once again, we stayed at the Pavilion Motel, an ideal facility that offers a conference room, allowing teams to eat together and socialise. Our teams were supported by a great group of parents. It was excellent to have TJ (our Waikato CEO) and other parents come along to cheer on our players.

The tournament was well run, and an asset for team building between our players. Over the many games held, we’re pleased Waikato was well represented.

Although it’s a demanding schedule, teams were able to enjoy a game of Ten Pin Bowling at the conclusion of the tournament. Many thanks to the coaches, managers and parents that made this a memorable tournament for everyone involved. Thanks goes to Pop’n’Good Popcorn for the use of their trailer again.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2018 SEASON

Wisden Cup Team Victorious For the 5th time in 8 years Waikato has won the prestigious Wisden Cup competition, New Zealand’s Division 1 Inter-Association league. After a disruptive preparation with lots of setbacks and injuries the players in the team pulled together and despite a loss in the preliminary round against the top seed and heavy favourite North Harbour, this result was turned around in the final with a 4-1 win in a new format which saw the Wisden Cup Live on Sky TV for the very first time.
