From The BV Office STATE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

The 79th Annual General Meeting of Badminton Victoria was held at the State Netball & Hockey Centre on Saturday 17th March 2012.

Peejade Cheng was elected unopposed as President of Badminton Victoria for the next two years, Ron Gray and Paul Kern were re-elected to the board and I would like to welcome Rochelle Liyanage from SEBA to the board.

The President summarised the past years achievements, highlighted some of the challenges ahead and acknowledged the contribution made by all our committees and volunteers throughout the past year. The final formality of the AGM was to install Mrs Pat Daw as a Life Member of Badminton Victoria. Pat has worked tirelessly for Badminton for over 40 years; Peejade highlighted Pat’s dedication to our sport and presented Pat’s Life Membership.

Badminton Victoria ran a competition to find a new logo as we commence our 80th year. After going through a number of very good submissions, the board decided on the logo from Southern Land Badminton. The club was then presented with two season tickets to the Yonex Australian Open. We would like to thank all those people that submitted a logo for consideration.

The board considered three applications from member associations to host the 2013 U17 June Bevan team event and National individual championships. After a great deal of discussion the board decided to award the Championships to Western Suburbs Badminton Association.

Congratulations to Badminton , in particular Loke Poh Wong and the many volunteers from all over Australia on the highly successful running of the Yonex Australian Open in . The venue looked world class, the field of competitors was world class and the volunteers were first class. The event was a sell-out on the final two days, with sold out signs out the front Saturday & Sunday.

Badmintons attention now turns attention to the 2012 Li-Ning Victorian International being held at MSAC on Thursday 28, Friday 29 and concluding on Saturday 30th June. Entry forms available soon.

Badminton Victoria Unveil Their New Logo During late 2011 Badminton Victoria set a challenge for its members, to create a new corporate image for Badminton Victoria. After many nominations and proposals from prospective designers, the Badminton Victoria board selected the design from "Southern Land Badminton Club" as the winning design.

The logo created by Southern Land was fresh and inviting, while clearly fitting the criteria that was set by the Badminton Victoria board. Southern Land's idea behind the logo was:

"The concept behind this logo design is simplicity. The main reason for choosing simplicity is to have your logo stand out in your industry and on your website."

Many of the logo's that Badminton Victoria compete with are bright, bold and full of colour, for this reason a simple logo was selected to stand out from the competition.

The rationale of the Badminton Victoria logo was:

"1. The shuttle in the centre represents the symbol of the sport, Badminton.

2. The shuttle also appears in a 'V' shape stands for Victoria

3. The curve outside the shuttle represents two things; the Badminton racket and the world - an international sport

4. The shade of blue chosen is Badminton Victoria's current corporate colour ( The colour also represents Victoria's state colour of Navy Blue)”

Badminton Victoria would like to congratulate Southern Land Badminton for their wonderful logo and the countless hours spent in its design and creation!

Look out for the new logo in all communications from Badminton Victoria from today onwards!

Pat Daw Inducted As A BV Life Member Pat Daw has been inducted as a Badminton Victoria Life Member at the 2011 AGM, held on Saturday 17th March 2012, at the State Netball Hockey Centre. This is recognition of the many years of hard work and dedication to the sport of Badminton in Victoria.

Badminton Victoria would like once again congratulate Pat on this achievement!

For those who dont know Pat, here is a bit about her:

"Pat joined the committee of Western Suburbs Badminton Association, chairing her first meeting as President in 1989 and still holds this position.

On numerous occasions, between managers, Pat took over the day to day running of the Altona Badminton Centre and spent many hours organising the staff and overseeing the administration of the Stadium.

Pat has been involved in the organisation of many WSBA tournaments and the 2006 and 2008 Under 15 national carnivals held at Altona. She has also been the Event Director for an Under 19 Australian Carnival and Under 17 Australasian Badminton Carnival hosted by Badminton Victoria.

Pat was a member of Victorian Badminton Association Council in the 1960’s, a member of the Badminton Victoria Review Committee in 1999 and has worked, as a volunteer at collating tournament results.

Pat is the WSBA delegate to the Victorian Junior Badminton committee and has recently taken the position of secretary of the Victorian Junior Badminton committee.

Pat has been most proactive in setting up all the tournament and pennant competitions on the BA approved tournament software and willingly shares her knowledge with others.

Pat updates and maintains the WSBA website which has an average of 3000 – 4000 readers accessing it each month. Pat also maintains the VJB website.

Pat Daw Inducted As A BV Life Member (Cont.) Pat has assisted Badminton Victoria with tournaments, school events and special events such as hosting the Junior Badminton trip to in 2009.

Pat was very supportive and proactive in the set up and running of the Western Suburbs Badminton Association’s junior development squad in 2002. Since that time the association has conducted clinics in many of our local schools and the number of children passing through clinics, casual coaching, squads and our junior pennant would number in the thousands.

Pat has just commenced her 22nd year as president of Western Suburbs Badminton Association, by far and away the longest serving president in its seventy-seven year existence.

Pat became interested in badminton when she went to pennant competition matches at St Johns Footscray with her parents Ray & Mavis Weisheit and played for about forty years. Pat obviously has badminton in her blood. Her father, Ray is also a WSBA life member (1952) and a Badminton Victoria life member (1954).

Pat became a life member of Western Suburbs Badminton Association in 2000."

Badminton Australia Rankings At the BA Board Meeting on 18 February it was agreed that it was now time to base the seeds for all national events solely on national rankings. By so doing this will elevate the status of the ranking system and encourage players to play in as many ranked events as possible during the year. It will also encourage all Members to submit a good selection of Events for inclusion on the ranking list and you are encouraged to do so.

This new approach is designed to elevate the status of the ranking list, encourage players to take the list seriously and allow organizers to finalize and circulate all draws for individual events in advance given the individual event seeds will no longer be dependent on results in the team event.

Given that BA wants to encourage a broader range of ranking events BA has decided that for all Junior Events ( U19/U17/U15 ) that this approach will be adopted from 2013 onwards. This allows time for all coaches, administrators and players to be fully aware of the change and allows BA to consult with NZ about the impact of the change on the Australasian U17 Event. However, in relation to the Senior Closed National Individual Event to be held in Sydney in August 2012 BA has decided national rankings will be applied allowing the draw to be circulated in advance of the Event.

Please pass this information onto your Event organizers, coaches, players and administrators so all have plenty of time to understand how seeds for individual events will be determined and reminding all of the importance of national rankings. BWF Rule Change

The BWF Council meeting of the 9th December 2011 approved a change of regulation to restrict the height of the country name on player clothing from 1st January 2013 to a maximum height of 5 cm (please see below) from the previous regulation of between 6 cm and 10 cm.

General Competition Regulations

2.2.4 The country name must be a maximum height of 5 centimetres. (Effective 1st January 2013).

However in response to recent requests made by some Member Associations BWF will accept players displaying the future requirement of 5 cm with immediate effect.

Players do not have to change however until 1st January 2013.

Therefore for the avoidance of doubt for the remainder of 2012, until 1st January 2013, both the original regulation (22.2.3…….lettering must be a minimum height of 6 centimetres and a maximum height of 10 centimetres) and the new regulation (22.2.4 The country name must be a maximum height of 5 centimetres) will be effective.

From 1st January 2013 it will no longer be possible to have the lettering of the country name a height above 5 cm

2012 Yonex Australian Badminton Open Over the period in early April, Darling Harbour came alive for the 2012 Yonex Australian Badminton Open. After many gruelling days the finals were ’s day, taking three of the five titles, men’s and women’s singles, and women’s doubles.

Over the week Badzine reporter Aaron Wong was on site providing player interviews, match reports and insights into the tournament. Make sure you check out badzine.net for all the latest Badminton news. This is how Aaron viewed the finals from the stands:

MS: (1) (CHN) vs Tien Minh Nguyen (4) (VIE)

World champion Chen Jin of China opened his account with a 5-1 lead. Very long rallies ensued but Vietnam's Tien Minh Nguyen could not unbalance Chen the way is able to.

Gradually it became evident that Nguyen's "runner" style of play does not trouble Chen. With the predictability of shots he was witnessing, the Chinese implemented his muscly game plan earlier in the match than in previous days and it paid dividends with a 21- 11 head start.

Although Nguyen was troubled by the Chen Jin's smash time and again, even when in position, there was a predictability to Chen's formula too, so the Vietnamese attempted to change his footwork down to third gear to get to all the shots earlier and won some of the rallies with drop shots. It was not enough as Chen is incredibly fit too and added the running style to his own muscle game. Without a bigger smash and Chen equaling his speed, Nguyen had no more weapons to make inroads and was overcome 21-12 in the second set.

WS: Bae Youn Joo (5) (KOR) vs Han Li (CHN)

Unseeded Han Li of China who came through the qualifying rounds again defeated Korea's Bae Youn Joo for the second time in straight sets in eight months. This time, 21-13, 21-14.

Han was the dictator of play in both sets against Bae, who had been seen holding tissues and sneezing previous to the match. The first set was all one-way traffic to the Chinese player.

In the second set, Bae was made to cover the court and suffer at Han's weapon of choice, the drop shot. Bae began to implement her game but it was too late to stem the tide as well as she lacked smash power today to put away half courts half opportunities she had created for herself.

2012 Yonex Australian Badminton Open MD: Fang Chieh Min/ Lee Sheng Mu (3) (TPE) vs / (6) (INA)

The first set of the men’s doubles contained three players of average high quality, with only Hendra Setiawan feeling inspired. On several occasions Kido's flat smashes met the tape of the net and Fang was poor at fulfilling his responsibilities taking care of the net area.

As Kido began to find his jump smash at the rear, Fang and Lee continued to appear nonplussed about winning. Fang committed errors on smash returns that he was in position for and his short serves were relatively loose at the net too.

Lee Sheng Mu was focused but taking on the alertness of both Kido and Setiawan now would be too much and the match went to the Indonesians, 21-16, 21-15.

"Actually, we were expecting a more difficult match," Hendra remarked afterwards.

WD: Cheng Wen Hsing/ Chien Yu Chin (TPE) vs / (CHN)

The more experienced ladies from Chinese Tapaei have beaten this young pair before as evidenced by the opening set score, 21-12.

Cheng and Chien kept the scores close in the second by using percentage play most of the way and not proactively going out to grab the lead as a way of resting Cheng, who had already played a long mixed doubles final. The Luo Chinese twins smashed continually, sure in the fact that although their opponents defend brilliantly that a few unforced errors would creep in and they were right. Luo and Luo claimed the second, 21-18.

The third set thrilled the audience as the rallies became even longer and flatter, thus more nerve wracking from the spectators. Chien was clearly trying brute power and it worked sometimes in conjunction with her experience to smash her third smash through the middle of the Chinese pair as it was left untaken.

The Luo twins stuck to their plan which finally earned an earlier break away and further caused Chien to give away a return of serve error, as well as her side gifting two more costly errors from trying to win rallies prematurely. China finished off the set 21-17 and won their second title of the day.

2012 Yonex Australian Badminton Open XD: Hung Ling Chen/ Wen Hsing Cheng (2) (TPE) vs Peng Soon Chan /Liu Ying Goh (MAS)

Mixed doubles lasting 63 minutes was the longest match of the day and one between equals. It was a frighteningly close dash to the finish line, but it was the big match experienced ( Open Super Series) winners from Chinese Taipei, Chen Hung Ling/ Cheng Wen Hsing who prevailed, 22-20, 12-21, 23-21.

The Malaysians were keenly aware of their opponent's quality despite holding a small lead by the opening set interval. They had been forcing both individuals of their opposition into errors of touch. The players from Chinese Taipei made a late bid for the first set once they had dusted off the cobwebs, with Cheng Wen Hsing's unmovable defence key to maintaining stability.

Returning on the other side of the court, Chan and Liu created a four- point buffer again. Just as their opponents had a modicum of luck at the end of the first set, this time it was the Malaysians with the fluke net shot by Goh at 19-12, that put them out of reach.

Chen Hung Ling made a difference in the third set by smashing harder. Controversy over a double hit which the umpire did not see and called as a let instead of awarding the point to the Malaysians kept scores tight. Each side suffered nerves at the deuce with Chen and Cheng regrouping the quickest to finally close out proceedings.

Fastest Smash

The fastest smash recorded today was by men’s doubles champion and Olympic champion, Markis Kido of , who registered a smash at 289 kph! He was firing these smashes constantly throughout the match, which ignited the crowd creating an electric atmosphere at the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre. Not bad for a man only 1.68 metres tall!

2012 Altona Open & Graded A very successful tournament was staged at Altona, with just over 100 players competing across the Open and three graded categories. On Saturday, they kicked off with the Open and B graded events. There were heaps of close, tight games with all matches completed by around 6:00pm on Saturday evening. A and C grade events were played on Sunday, with all matches finished by around 3:00pm.

With many of the national squad not competing, this opened the tournament up for the rest of the field to make their mark. The best performing Open player (and winner of the CM Wong trophy), was Western Suburbs player, Ann-Louise Slee. Ann took out the Open Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles (with Eugenia Tanaka) and Mixed Doubles (with Nelson Oon). More importantly, Ann picked up $700.00 in prize money on the day. Another notable performance in the Open events was by Nelson Oon, who won the Open Mens Singles and the Mixed Doubles.

The A Grade numbers were down on recent times, therefore they only had entries to conduct the Mens Singles and Doubles. All other categories were of similar numbers to last year.

Western Suburbs really appreciated the participation of players who attended the tournament. The day ran very smoothly thanks to their support and the hard work and dedication of the umpires and tournament referee, Myrna Stanlake. WSBA extends a big thankyou to all who helped out on the day and to our major sponsors, Schweppes Australia Pty Ltd and Epsilon Australia Pty Ltd
