The Paperboys Workshops 092515
The Paperboys Workshops Celtic Fiddle Kalissa Landa teaches this hands-on workshop covering Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and Ottawa Valley styles. The class covers bow technique, ornamentation, lilts, slurs, slides etc. and includes reels, jigs, polkas, airs and strathspeys. Kalissa has been playing fiddle since before she could walk, and dedicates much of her time to teaching both children and adults. She runs the fiddle program at the prestigious Vancouver Academy of Music. For beginners, intermediate, or advanced fiddlers. Celtic Flute/Whistle Paperboys flute/whistle player Geoffrey Kelly will have you playing a jig or a reel by the end of the class. While using the framework of the melody, you will learn many of the ornaments used in Celtic music, including slides, rolls, trills, hammers etc. We will also look at some minor melody variations, and where to use them in order to enhance the basic melody. Geoffrey is a founding member of Spirit of the West, a four-year member of the Irish Rovers, and the longest serving Paperboy. Geoffrey has composed many of the Paperboys’ instrumentals. Latin Music Overview In this workshop, the Paperboys demonstrate different styles of Latin Music, stopping to chat about them and break down their components. It's a Latin Music 101 for students to learn about the different kinds of genres throughout Latin America, including but not limited to Salsa, Merengue, Mexican Folk Music, Son Jarocho, Cumbia, Joropo, Norteña, Son Cubano, Samba, and Soca. This is more of a presentation/demonstration, and students don't need instruments. Latin Percussion Percussionist/Drummer Sam Esecson teaches this hands-on workshop, during which he breaks down the different kinds of percussion in Latin music. -

Andrew N. Weintraub. Dangdut Stories: A Social and Musical History of Indonesia's Most Popular Music. New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2010. Photographs, musical notation, glossary, bibliography, index. 258+ pp. R. Anderson Sutton At last, a book on dangdut, and an excellent one. It is hard to imagine that anyone with experience in Indonesia over the past thirty-five years could be unaware of dangdut and its pervasive presence in the Indonesian soundscape. The importance of this music was first recognized in the international scholarly world by William Frederick in his landmark article on Rhoma Irama in the pages of this journal almost thirty years ago.1 Other scholars have devoted chapters to dangdut,2 but it is only with this meticulously researched and engagingly written book-length study by Andrew Weintraub that we have the important combination of perspectives—historical, musicological, sociological, gender, and media/cultural studies—that this rich and multifaceted form of expression deserves. Weintraub offers this highly informative study under the rubric of "dangdut stories," modestly pointing to the "incomplete and selective" nature of the stories he tells. But what he has accomplished is nothing short of a tour de force, giving us a very readable history of this genre, and untangling much about its diverse origins and the multiplicity of paths it has taken into the first decade of the twenty-first century. Dr. Kenneth Kreitner, Ph.D. This paper explores the Colombian nationalistic musical movement, which was born as a search for identity that various composers undertook in order to discover the roots of Colombian musical folklore. These roots, while distinct, have all played a significant part in the formation of the culture that gave birth to a unified national identity. It is this identity that acts as a recurring motif throughout the works of the four composers mentioned in this study, each representing a different stage of the nationalistic movement according to their respective generations, backgrounds, and ideological postures. The idea of universalism and the integration of a national identity into the sphere of the Western musical tradition is a dilemma that has caused internal struggle and strife among generations of musicians and artists in general. This paper strives to open a new path in the research of nationalistic music for violin and piano through the analyses of four works written for this type of chamber ensemble: the third movement of the Sonata Op. 7 No.1 for Violin and Piano by Guillermo Uribe Holguín; Lopeziana, piece for Violin and Piano by Adolfo Mejía; Sonata for Violin and Piano No.3 by Luís Antonio Escobar; and Dúo rapsódico con aires de currulao for Violin and Piano by Andrés Posada. -

If you missed the first one, click here. Eileen Karmy is a music scholar interested in music politics, labor history, and archival research. She completed her PhD in Music at the University of Glasgow in 2019 with a thesis on the development of musicians’ unions in Chile. She has researched on popular music in Chile, especially cumbia, tango, and Nueva Canción. She regularly disseminates her research through articles, blog posts, films, and digital repositories. She created the digital archive of musicians’ organizations in Valparaíso (memoriamusicalvalpo.cl) in 2015. She has published books and journal articles on Chilean New Song, tango orchestras, tropical music, musicians’ working conditions, and the social history of musicians’ organizations in Chile. These include the book ¡Hagan un trencito! Siguiendo los pasos de la memoria cumbianchera en Chile (1949-1989), co-authored with Ardito, Mardones, and Vargas (2016), and her article “Musical Mutualism in Valparaiso during the Rise of the Labor Movement (1893–1931),” Popular Music and Society, 40, no. 5, 2017. Digital Archiving on Chilean Music and Musicians, Part 2 In this post, I share a list of digital sources that hold relevant material and specific information about music and musicians in Chile that might be useful for scholars interested in researching Chilean music and culture in general. While I did not use these sites for my research on musicians’ unions I am familiar with them because they proved useful in my previous studies of Chilean popular music history. -

15 LA OMNIPRESENCIA DE LA POLIFONÍA MUSICAL CARIBE EN BARRANQUILLA Jairo Solano Alonso1 CONTRIBUCIÓN DEL UNIVERSO MUSICAL DEL CARIBE A LA ALEGRÍA DEL MUNDO La música, que reside y se hace omnipresente en Barranquilla es una sínte- sis afortunada de todas las melodías y ritmos del Caribe, tanto continental como insular. Región privilegiada que a pesar del dolor y el sojuzgamiento material y espiritual de sus gentes ha sido la que más “ha contribuido a la alegría del mundo”, (Quintero, 1998, p.13) a pesar del desarraigo, de las diásporas y de la ignominia de la dominación de los cuerpos torturados (Quijano, 2009, pp.36-38) y esclavizados. Bien se ha dicho que la música es “resumen de dolor y alegría, es el espejo delicado que refl eja todo lo que siente y vive el hombre”. Esos viajeros forzados a zarpar “agobiados por nostalgias y recuerdos abrumados por todo lo que signifi ca el horizonte y el ritmo ilimitado del mar”. Para la gestación de la música del Caribe “se comenzaron a aunar las tres sangres musicales con insospechadas herencias. Así, poco a poco, se iría manifestando la inmensa riqueza musical de los indígenas, español y ne- gro. Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory. -

MAYO 2017 2 Resumen En el presente documento se realiza una indagación y análisis de dos expresiones culturales de Cuba y Colombia, la rumba cubana y el bullerengue. Se busca desde un principio obtener conocimientos acerca del contexto y las características de cada género, explorando aspectos sociales, y principalmente enfocándose en la música y su expresión a través de las voces y percusión. Se realiza también un análisis musical comparando cada género y sus vertientes, tomando como elementos de estudio diferentes piezas musicales de cada tradición y transcripciones de entrevistas con intérpretes de dichas tradiciones. En el análisis se demuestran similitudes entre los ritmos característicos de cada género, la manera cómo se comporta el instrumento improvisador y cómo interactúa con las voces. Por último, se aplican los conocimientos adquiridos en la creación de una pieza musical integrando las dos tradiciones. La investigación tiene como finalidad medir las similitudes entre la rumba cubana y el bullerengue, y demostrar cómo se les puede aplicar en la construcción de una pieza musical nueva.
