INTRODUCTION Genealogical material in the form of correspondence, notes, photographs, slides, obituaries, histories, marriages, and funerals of the McGee and other related family members. Also includes Civil War muster rolls. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Ivan N. McGee on 31 January and 1 March, 1977 (Accession No. 2066). An addition was made on 17 January 2003 to the University of Missouri by Winston McGee (Accession No. 5967). SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The papers have been arranged into the following four series: Genealogical Material Photographs Oversize Audio/Visual The Genealogical Material series consists of correspondence, notes, marriages, funerals, land sales, school yearbooks, a baptismal certificate, land records, settlements, Civil War muster rolls, military discharge, and obituaries. The material references the McGee, Czeschin, Abrego, Cudd, and other related families. Years covered are 1838- 1996. The Photographs series contain images of the McGee, Czeschin, Kruegar, Church, Aufdenhide, Young, Sewell, Phelps, Bunge, Foley, Koenig and related families, as well as photographs of the United States Air Force (USAF) Central Film exchange in St. Louis, where Bernice Abrego, worked as USAF film exchange Chief of Administration. This series also includes slides of the U.S. Air Force Film Library Building and Staff. The Oversize Material series contains three diplomas for Ida E. Czeschin-May 15, 1915, May 24, 1918, and June 9, 1921; Ida E. Czeschin, Four Minute Men speaking contest award certificate, c.1917 or 1918; one Hickman High school diploma for Bernice Lorraine McGee, May 23, 1940; Marriage Certificate for Elmer McGee and Ida Czeschin, July 17, 1921; Certificate of Retirement of Benito L. Abrego, 10 August, 1966; Dr. of Philosophy certificate for John Michael Cudd, Rutgers University, October 1, 1973. The Audio/Visual series consists of 15 8mm reels of European travel film, c. 1950s and one VHS tape covering the Hickman High School Class of 1940, 60th Class Reunion, and Sept. 22-24, 2000. These inventors made items like the light bulb, cotton gin, and mass production using an assembly line. These inventors created something that did not exist before. Entrepreneurs also create things by combining resources and ideas to solve problems or market needs ‐‐‐ some of which may be new inventions but often times are new uses or ways of doing things. Entrepreneurs create markets for products where none existed before. The computer industry has an amazing number of entrepreneurs, such as Steve Jobs of Apple and Bill Gates of Microsoft being two of the most prominent in the industry. All across Arkansas entrepreneurs have brought products to the market. A study conducted by the University of Michigan and Florida International University that tracks entrepreneurial activity over time reports that after a 20 percent dip in 2004, the number of U.S. entrepreneurs increased by 30 percent in 2005, with more than 23 million people starting new businesses or managing firms less than four years old.

INTRODUCTION This collection contains the business accounts, tax receipts, correspondence, legal documents, deeds, and miscellaneous papers of the Hickman family of Boone County, Missouri. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were deposited at the State Historical Society of Missouri by Paul Q. Sapp in 1944. Additions to the collection were made by Mrs. Albertise Coon Reppy of Hillsboro, Missouri on 23 June 1955, and Mrs. Ruth Rollins Westfall on 21 September 1973 (Accession no. 1033). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH David M. Hickman (1788-1851) first visited Missouri in 1817, returning to Bourbon County, Kentucky where he married Eliza Johnston, the daughter of William and Rachel Johnston, also of Bourbon County, in 1818. David Hickman and his wife emigrated to Boone County, Missouri in 1822 along with his father-in-law, William Johnston, and other relatives and slaves. Hickman purchased property and established his family in what is now southern Columbia. The Hickman's welcomed three sons into the family: William T., born 2 September 1819, David Henry, born 11 November 1821, and James, born in 1824. Eliza Johnston Hickman died on 14 June 1827 at the age of 24. Twenty months later, Hickman married Cornelia Bryan, another Kentucky émigré. The couple added four sons and one daughter to their family. In 1829, Hickman and some of his neighbors in the southern Two Mile Prairie area organized the Bonne Femme Academy for male students on the north bank of Bonne Femme Creek, about six miles south of Columbia.

    WHAT MAKES THE RETAIL KING PROFILE OF SAM WALTON: Sam Walton was an American businessman. In his early twenties, he began his training with J.C. Penney in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1962 he opened his first retail store,Wal-Mart, in Rogers, Arkansas. By 1992, he had more than 1,700. Unlike other discount retailers, he opened stores in small towns where there was little competition. At the time of his death, he was thewealthiest man in the United States. Early Years: A pioneering businessman who broke convention and showed that large discount stores could thrive in small, rural areas, Samuel Moore Walton was born March 29, 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He was the first son of Thomas Walton, a banker, and his wife, Nancy Lee. Early in his life Walton and his family moved to Missouri, where he was raised. An able student and a good athlete, Walton quarterbacked his high school football team and was an Eagle Scout. Upon his graduation from Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, in 1936, his classmates named him "most versatile boy." After high school Walton University of Missouri in Columbia, where he graduated with a degree in economics in 1940. Early Retail Career: Following college, Walton got his first real taste of the retail world when took a job in Des Moines with the J.C. Penney Company, which was still a relatively small retailer. After serving as an Army captain in an intelligence unit during World War II, Walton returned to private life in 1945 and used a $25,000 loan from his father- in-law to acquire his first store, a Ben Franklin franchise in Newport, Arkansas.
