Biographical Sketch: Allen Arthur Wright was born in Toronto in 1916. He served six years with the Royal Canadian Engineers during World War II. He became involved in various highway construction and surveying projects in the north. He and his wife settled in Whitehorse in 1958, where he worked on federal highway projects. He was the Pipeline Co-ordinator for the Territorial Government, and used his knowledge as a consulting engineer when he was an alderman on the Whitehorse City Council. His interest in history led him to write his first book "Prelude to Bonanza", which was published in 1976 by Gray's Publishing Ltd. He was involved in many other historical research projects, including a history of Kluane National Park, and writing columns for the Whitehorse Star. Allen Wright died in Whitehorse, October 18, 1983. His wife retired to Victoria. Scope and Content: This fonds consists of imprint material, colour films, maps of the Yukon, photos, correspondence and research and reference files, collected and created by Allen Wright in his research of early Yukon history, as well as through his work as a highway engineer. The fonds consists of two series: Historical Research; and Transportation Source of Supplied Title Note: Title based on provenance of the fonds. Acc# Film Video Title/Description location location 84/20 l6-94 V-51-2 Dempster Road Reconnaissance The film was made in the summer of l958 and it depicts the process of evaluating and selecting a route for the Dempster Highway. Included are scenes of the reconnaissance party, which included Allen Wright, loading and transporting their supplies, camping, evaluating the ground surfaces, and plotting results on a map. Communities shown in the film include: Whitehorse, Dawson City, Eagle Plains and Ft. McPherson. 30 min, 600 ft. 84/20 l6-95 V-51-3 Face of Yukon This film was made in the mid-l960's and includes many scenes of Whitehorse. Especially good are the sequences of the open-air Lions Swimming Pool and the children’s swimming classes. There are also views of an early construction camp at Clinton Creek, of Al Wright, George Smashnak and others involved with survey work on the Dempster Highway route, Carcross scenes, and views which document Al Wright at work on several major Yukon construction projects. 45 min., l000 ft. 87/10 16-134 V-128-1 [Canada's Newest National Park] Home movie footage taken by Al Wright presumably in Kluane National Park of a fishing trip he took part in. ca. 1962 Colour, silent, 1 min. 25 sec. 87/10 16-135 V-128-2 Tintina Mine – Anvil Home movie taken by Al Wright showing aerial views of the Tintina Mine site and surrounding area and some footage of bridge construction.
