THE HOLY SEE, SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW: ASSESSING THE SOCIAL MISSION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE GATT-WTO SYSTEM By Copyright 2014 Fr. Alphonsus Ihuoma ________________________________ Professor Raj Bhala (Chairperson) Date approved: May 15, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Man, as a person, is superior to the state, and consequently the good of the person transcends the good of the state. The philosopher Jacques Maritain developed his political philosophy thoroughly informed by his deep Catholic faith. His philosophy places the human person at the center of every action. In developing his political thought, he enumerates two principal tasks of the state as (1) to establish and preserve order, and as such, guarantee justice, and (2) to promote the common good. The state has such duties to the people because it receives its authority from the people. The people possess natural, God-given right of self-government, the exercise of which they voluntarily invest in the state. -

[Editor's Note: The author situates his study of Murray against the background of recent unfavorable criticism about his stand ing in American Catholicism. He then identifies Murray's ap proach to faith through an analysis of the notion of "voluntary dynamic," locating it within several contexts and showing its close relationship to the teaching of Vatican II. Special atten tion is given to the council's shift from the freedom of faith to the dignity of the believer as image of God.] HE VALIDITY of theological reflection on the act and habit of faith T cannot be taken for granted. Lutheran-Catholic dialogue has drawn attention to an absence of contradiction between Luther's con cept of faith as a comprehensive reception of justification and the Catholic concept of faith as one of three theological virtues by which the justified relate immediately to God.1 If fundamental theology none theless proceeds in accord with the Pauline triad of faith, hope, and charity, this is not to ignore the intrinsic unity of the Christian way of life or to counteract the Lutheran perspective. The three theological virtues simply spell out basic modes in one, complete reception of God, THOMAS HUGHSON, S.J., received his doctorate in theology at the University of St. -

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops. -

Research Masters in Theology Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick David Kennedy Student Number: 13172921 Supervisor: Rev. Dr. Eugene Duffy Abstract The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Eminent theologians, Gerald O’Collins, Anthony J. Kelly and Luis M. Bermejo claim that a strange neglect of Jesus’ resurrection persists in contemporary theologies of the Eucharist. All three suggest that this deficiency emerges from, and is most evident in, theologies of the Eucharist which are shaped by the insights of classical Christology. This thesis will demonstrate that the narrowness and rigidity of such Christology with regard to the Eucharist, finds its clearest expression in the neo-scholastic manualist tradition. To show how traditional theologians failed to engage with Jesus’ resurrection Joseph Pohle’s dogmatic treatise on the Eucharist first published in 1917, is presented herein. However, while such traditional discourse on the Eucharist prevailed in the seminaries in the early twentieth century, a clear shift soon began to emerge, whereby sacramental theologians on mainland Europe broke away from the narrow approach of neo-scholastic reflection by rediscovering the centrality of the Paschal Mystery to theologies of the Eucharist. This thesis suggests that the break with the neo-scholastic manualist tradition and its treatment of the Eucharist, finds its origins in the writings of the Benedictine liturgist, Dom Odo Casel, whose treatise on the mystery of Christian Worship was published in 1932. -
Presidential Address CATHOLIC THEOLOGY and the RETRIEVAL
• CTSA PROCEEDINGS 46 (1991): 75-94 • Presidential Address CATHOLIC THEOLOGY AND THE RETRIEVAL OF ITS INTELLECTUAL TRADITION: PROBLEMS AND POSSIBILITIES Shortly after Kuwait had been liberated from the Iraqi forces, the curator of the Kuwait National Museum appeared on a television interview The Iraqis had destroyed the interior of the museum, but only after they had pillaged the finest artistic and historic treasures it contained. The curator said sadly, They stole or destroyed our most precious heritage-the art" acts, monuments and records that gave us our identity as a nation." That indee was likely a good part of Saddam Hussein's purpose because he constantly tried «justify his invasion of Kuwait by denying its identity as a separate country, insisting it was only another province of Iraq. To remove national treasures of the past would destroy the historical evi- dence of Kuwait's distinct identity. I cite this incident as a concrete example of the importance of history and his- torical traditions to the identity of any group, whether it be political, social, cul- tural or religious. In speaking about Catholic theology's intellectual tradition, my first task may have to be to insist that it is indeed important to our very identity as Catholics and as Catholic intellectuals to maintain, deepen, reexamine critically and where necessary, retrieve the Catholic intellectual tradition that guarantees our identity and nourishes our theology as intellectually vital inquiry. If we look at the Jewish people, our forebears in the faith, we see how im- portant it has always been for them to maintain and develop their traditions They begin every Passover meal by retelling their story, and their scriptures and tradi- tions are the life line keeping them from losing their identity amid the floods of dispersals and persecutions. -
