Western Illinois University, 1983 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2015 © 2015 Louis Mindar III ii ABSTRACT Road Stories is a collection of three novellas that explore the pull, allure, sanctuary, serendipity, and adventure of life on the open road. The novellas examine how for some, the road holds the promise of a new day, an improved life, a better opportunity, or a deeper love; while for others, it is nothing more than an assortment of jumbled blue lines on a map. In Tierra del Fuego, a man takes to the road to figure out how to deal with the grief and sense of betrayal he feels following the death of his wife. Lake of the Falls involves a decades-long dispute between a father and son who take to the road and come to realize that home is not always where you live. In Back on the Road, three recent college graduates set off on a road trip inspired by Kerouac’s On the Road to celebrate the end of their college years and lament the imminent approach of adulthood, only to learn that their lives are soon going to take vastly different paths. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In addition to his thesis committee, the author wishes to thank and acknowledge proofreaders Clay Snellgrove, Cathleen Reid and Andrea Smith Schwebke, sounding board and classmate Nick Rupert, and formatting genius Sean Ironman. Our small car climbed steep, muddy roads up the mountain toward the ferry we hoped would be waiting for us. Sebastian was behind the wheel, awake and alert. I was crumpled in the passenger seat, trying to sleep but failing. The jostling and jarring from the car hitting puddled ruts in the road kept me awake. We’d left Sebastian’s farm, Finca Fin del Mundo, at four o’clock that morning. The farm sat in the hills several miles north of Ushuaia, the capital city of the province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in Argentina. It was April in Tierra del Fuego, autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather was cold and rainy, the air smelling of earthy decay. Sebastian had both hands on the wheel, his sad, smiling eyes fixed on the narrow road ahead. I marveled to think that a month earlier I hadn’t even known him. We had met as strangers, pushed together by circumstances, and we were about to part as friends, knowing that we were unlikely to ever see each other again. His finca had been a safe, albeit unlikely, landing spot for me, and I hated to leave. The thought of simply staying had crossed my mind several times, but I knew I had to go. Sebastian’s little Renault struggled to gain traction going up the muddy mountain road. Several times he had to shift to a lower gear to keep moving forward. The French-made car was small but never faltered, and a little over an hour after we began our journey, we descended the other side of the mountain on our way toward Rio Grande. 2 The rain fell harder on the way down the mountain and the muddy road became slicker and more treacherous. I was nervous, but Sebastian handled the tricky road with the ease of a seasoned veteran. He was calm, having grown up in these conditions and was used to driving in them. I was sweating it. The sun climbed in the eastern sky as we made our way down the mountain and I saw cloud-muted rays glinting off the surface of a large lake in the distance. “What is that?” I asked. “That’s Lake Fagnano. It is named after Monsignor Fagnano, the Italian priest who came to Tierra del Fuego many years ago to protect the natives who were living here at the time. People also call it Lake Cami, but I prefer Fagnano.” “It looks pretty big.” “Oh, yes. It’s very long. We will be driving on the south and east side of the lake. It goes all

PACIFIC SEABIRDS A Publication of the Pacific Seabird Group Volume 44, Number 2 2017 PACIFIC SEABIRD GROUP Dedicated to the Study and Conservation of Pacific Seabirds and Their Environment The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is a society of professional seabird researchers and managers dedicated to the study and conservation of seabirds. PSG was formed in 1972 out of a need for increased communication among academic and government seabird researchers. The principal goals of PSG are to (1) increase the quality and quantity of seabird research through facilitating exchange of information; (2) identify and assess the importance of threats to seabird populations; and (3) provide government agencies and others with expert advice on managing populations of seabirds. PSG is headed by an Executive Council composed of members volunteering their time. Members include biologists, wildlife managers, students, and conservationists from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan and 12 other countries. PSG annual meetings and publications provide forums where members can share their findings on all research topics relating to Pacific seabirds and discuss local and large scale conservation issues. Abstracts for meetings are published on our website. PSG publishes the on-line bulletin Pacific Seabirds (formerly the PSG Bulletin; www.pacificseabirdgroup.org) and the journal Marine Ornithology (www.marineornithology.org). Other publications include symposium volumes and technical reports; these are listed near the back of this issue. PSG is a member of the Ornithological Council and the American Bird Conservancy. Annual dues for membership are $40 (individual); $30 (student, undergraduate and graduate); and $1,200 (Life Membership, payable in five $240 installments).

LASSETER May 2013 Copyright M.E. Lasseter 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis traces the various physical and metaphorical journeys south of Chicago musician Andrew Bird. Using what historical record is publicly available, I examine Bird’s formal musical training. I then explore the years between 1995 and 2001, or what I call Bird’s period of apprenticeship. Next is an exploration of the canonical narratives surrounding the blues of the Mississippi Delta, especially the music of Charley Patton. When Andrew Bird encountered a canon, or dominant histories and meanings of Southern music that influence how musicians play and how audiences interpret that music, he began to react against that canon in his own compositions and performances.

Presumption and Despair: The figure of Bernard in Middle English imaginative literature Adam Tyler Horn Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Adam Tyler Horn All Rights Reserved Abstract Presumption and Despair: The figure of Bernard in Middle English imaginative literature Adam Tyler Horn This dissertation pursues two distinct but parallel projects in relation to the work of Bernard of Clairvaux and Middle English imaginative literature. First, I argue for a Bernardine anagogical lens as a way to better understand the deepest theological commitments and most distinctive formal innovations of certain key Middle English literary texts, especially Piers Plowman and The Canterbury Tales. Second, I outline a more genealogical project, tracing the figure of Bernard as it is explicitly invoked in widely circulated Middle English works including Piers, The Parson’s Tale, and the Prick of Conscience. These two threads connect to suggest that the work of Bernard of Clairvaux can offer a new way to understand the relationship between theological and literary texts in the late Middle Ages. Because Bernard’s influence in the vernacular is as much as matter of style as of content, it requires a more capacious way of theorizing the theological implications and even motivations of literary form. The “figure of Bernard” acts as a cipher for later works to explore their deepest intellectual preoccupations, and makes it possible to trace the way they imagine the anagogical interval between the presence and absence of Christ, the over- and under-estimation of the presence of eternity in time.
