After graduating from Phoenix Union High School in 1940 and. spending two years at Phoenix Junior College, Chet entered the Air Force and. served from 1943 to 1946. On his return home from the military he entered the University of Arizona and. received his BS in Business Administration in 1949. That same year he married Louise Keith. The following year he entered Harvard Business School where he majored in Marketing and Finance and. finished with his MBA in the spring of 1952. Chet Jr. and Louise had three children; Chet III, Gary, and Gerin. During this time he excelled in golf, qualifying for the Pacific Army Olympics in Hawaii. He also played for the University of Arizona varsity golf team for three years. His love for the sport became one of the constants throughout Chet Jr.’s life. With his MBA completed, Chet Jr. returned Phoenix to work at the men’s and boy’s clothing store, Hanny’s, where his father was Vice President. After two years, Chet resigned from the family business to start a new career in real estate by going to work for O’Malley Realty. In 1958 he became a self-employed real estate broker. While working as a broker, Chet Jr. entered Arizona politics. In 1960, Chet Goldberg Jr. ran successfully as a member of the Republican Party for the Arizona State House of Representatives. This was followed by another term in 1964 and a successful run for the State Senate in 1966. Chet Jr. served as the Majority Leader of Arizona’s first Republican led State Senate. He was a member of the Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Commerce and for the Department of Science and Technology. He also co- sponsored legislation that established the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Chet Jr. and Louise divorced in 1961. He married Ann Stallcup in 1964. After he left the world of politics in 1971, he resumed his career as an investment broker. Altogether he worked 45 years in real estate and security investments in Arizona as a broker, consultant, and advisor. In his later years Chet Jr. worked for many charitable organizations and served on several boards including the Phoenix Symphony Board and the Men’s Arts Councils of the Phoenix Art Museum. He chaired the Arizona State University Friends of the Library and. served on the ASU College of Business Emeritus Advisors Council. Much of his later philanthropic work was with the Foothills Community Foundation and the City of Carefree. He lived in Carefree from 1982 until his death on December 28, 2009. Scope and Content Note: Arranged in seven series: Series I: Family History-Contains general information concerning the Goldberg family starting with several family trees. Includes documents written about early Jewish Pioneers in the Southwest. Series II: Early Family Members-Focuses on the first two generations of Goldbergs in Arizona. Of interest are the brothers Hyman and Isaac early accounts of Arizona life, documents regarding Aaron Goldberg’s family and the men’s clothing business appropriately named Goldberg’s. Series III: Chet Goldberg Sr. This series concerns the third generation of the Goldberg family in Arizona, Chet Goldberg Sr. It primarily consists of personal and business materials such as financial records and. matters of estate, Phoenix Union High School yearbooks (The Phoenician)from 1914 to 1920, Goldberg’s Department Store and Hanny’s promotional materials. Series IV: Chet Goldberg Jr.- Represents the bulk of this collection and is subdivided into personal, business, politics, and public service. His personal life is richly documented from childhood to his time in the Air Force and at Harvard, as well as his love of golf. The business records reflect his time at Arizona State University College of Business and focuses on the First Arizona Corporation and the Tanner Companies. Includes speeches given at business conventions and meetings. Politics holds a wealth of information documenting his time on the Commerce Technical Advisory Board Panel and includes a full report of the Arizona Joint Economic Development Committee in 1967. Several folders are dedicated to the 1968 Daylight Savings Time exemption statute. Public service is comprised membership and financial statements of the University Club and a small collection of materials on the restoration of the Rosson House in which Chet Jr.’s father was born. This includes blueprints of the house, maps of the planned restoration, and restoration committee minutes. Series V: Photographs- Many images of the Goldbergs and extended family. Some of the most interesting are those concerning the Goldberg’s and Hanny’s stores. This includes promotions for the stores and the construction of the new Hanny’s building in 1946 and 1947. The transcript and notes from the 1999 interview are located in in Box 9, Folder 3. Series VII: Artifacts & Memorabilia- The artifacts of this collection range from personal belongings of Chet Goldberg Jr., family heirlooms such as a 1893 book of daily prayers for German and Polish Jews, political campaign materials, and promotional items for the Goldberg’s and Hanny’s stores.
