  • The Theological Themes in Newman's Dream of Gerontius
Theological themes in Newman’s Dream of Gerontius 1 Newman’s Theology in the Dream of Gerontius, Juan R. Vélez G., New Blackfriars, Vol. 82, No. 967 (2001), 387-398. Newman’s theology in the “Dream of Gerontius” (This version had some minor changes for publication). On the second centennial of Venerable John Henry Newman’s birth (1801-1890) we wish to draw attention to his celebrated Dream of Gerontius. Newman once humbly remarked to a friend that “It was written by accident – and it was published by accident.”1, yet his personal history proves otherwise; it was the fruit of many years of agonizing study and prayer leading him to the Roman Catholic Church. It is rightly considered by some a major contribution to Roman Catholic spirituality and doctrine which continues to inspire the theology and piety of men and women. The Dream of Gerontius expresses in poetical form many truths of Catholic dogma concerning creation, redemption and eschatology. This, Newman’s longest poem, composed in 1865, almost twenty years after his entrance into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, underscores his Catholic beliefs in the mysterious complementarity between God’s justice and mercy whereby at the particular judgment, some souls require a final preparation for heaven. In his Plain and Parochial Sermons Newman had rebutted the 19th century denial of possible eternal damnation. In the Dream of Gerontius, he emphasized God’s merciful dispensation that broadness the narrow fundamentalist perspective of heaven or hell. In this important work, eschatology is intertwinned with Christology and Christian anthropology. Furthermore, the seeds of an ecclesiology of communion are present as a dominant theme.

Catherine of Genoa Saint Catherine of Genoa (Caterina Fieschi Adorno, 1447 – 15 Saint September 1510) was an Italian Roman Catholic saint and mystic, admired Catherine of Genoa for her work among the sick and the poor[2] and remembered because of various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences. She was a member of the noble Fieschi family,[3] and spent most of her life and her means serving the sick, especially during the plague which ravaged Genoa in 1497 and 1501. She died in that city in 1510. Her fame outside her native city is connected with the publication in 1551 of the book known in English as the Life and Doctrine of Saint Catherine of Genoa.[3] She and her teaching were the subject of Baron Friedrich von Hügel's classic work The Mystical Element of Religion (1908).[2] Contents Early life Saint Conversion Born 1447 Spiritual teaching Genoa, Italy Beatification and canonization Died 1510 See also Genoa, Italy Notes Venerated in Catholic Church References Beatified 1675 by Pope Modern editions Clement X Further reading Canonized 1737 by Pope External links Clement XII Feast 15 September[1] Early life Attributes Widow Patronage Brides, Childless Catherine was born in Genoa in 1447, the last of five children.[4] Catherine's People, Difficult parents were Jacopo Fieschi and Francesca di Negro, both of illustrious Marriages, People Italian birth. • Time, Judgment, and Competitive Spirituality: a Reading of the Development of the Doctrine of Purgatory
Theological Studies 69 (2008) TIME, JUDGMENT, AND COMPETITIVE SPIRITUALITY: A READING OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOCTRINE OF PURGATORY JOHN E. THIEL Why has purgatory virtually disappeared from Catholic belief and practice since Vatican II? A competitive spirituality, gravitating around the religious vocation of ascetics from the late Middle Ages, enabled the doctrine by extending the temporal horizon within which God’s favorable judgment could be secured, first, in the life- long practice of ascetics in their spiritual competition with martyrs, and then into a supernatural time required for laypersons and as- cetics who could not meet the standard set by saintly ascetics. The loss of this competitive spirituality after Vatican II led to the loss of belief in purgatory and devotional practice surrounding it. OR MANY CATHOLICS IN THE POSTCONCILIAR CHURCH purgatory has F fallen off the eschatological map. It is difficult to know exactly why this has occurred. One reasonable explanation might run along the follow- ing lines. The theological and pastoral reception of the Second Vatican Council highlighted the power of God’s grace in bringing believers to salva- tion, and that emphasis undermined the detailed accounting of personal virtue and sin in the Tridentine merit system. This accent on the graciousness of divine love brought about a seismic shift in Catholic belief and practice. Con- servatives in the Church would continue the explanation by concluding that the postconciliar theology of God’s infinite mercy and compassion tragi- cally eclipsed the preconciliar sense of the power of personal sin. This diminishment of the sense of sin has had repercussions for a host of other mutually related beliefs and practices that explain the contemporary indif- ference toward purgatory.

H-German Newman on Astell, 'Eating Beauty: The Eucharist and the Spiritual Arts of the Middle Ages' Review published on Monday, October 1, 2007 Ann W. Astell. Eating Beauty: The Eucharist and the Spiritual Arts of the Middle Ages. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2006. xiii + 296 pp. $39.95 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-8014-4466-1. Reviewed by Martha Newman (Department of History, University of Texas at Austin) Published on H-German (October, 2007) Beauty and the Saints Ann W. Astell's Eating Beauty is a meditation on Christian theological aesthetics in which the author reads four strands of medieval and Counter-Reformation spirituality through the lens of Simone Weil's philosophy. Astell introduces her book by noting she wrote most of it in Washington, D.C. in 2001-02, a year in which the horrors of September 11, 2001 brought into focus Astell's fundamental question of whether beauty can be restored in a world deformed by catastrophe. She concludes with two poems by Tom Andrews that speak through the voices of Claire of Assisi and Michelangelo to consider the beauty in Jesus' suffering body. Between these bookends, Astell moves from Augustine of Hippo to G. W. F. Hegel and Weil, with four central chapters on Cistercian, Franciscan, Dominican, and Jesuit spiritualities.
