Towards Zero was adapted by Christie from one of her many novels and T premiered at London’s St. James’s Theatre in 1956. The play takes place during a houseparty at Gull’s Point, a seaside mansion along the Cornwall coastline. Lady Tressilian, the hostess, approaches the evening with a sense of unease brought about by her son’s decision to invite both his current and former wives to the party. Complications ensue, a guest is murdered (off stage), and Superintendent Battle of Scotland Yard and audience members try to follow the twists and turns of the complex plot to determine the identity of the killer. A nail-biting thriller, the play probes the psychology of jealousy in the shadow of a savage and brutal murder. A carefully unpeeled investigation before our eyes brings the story to a pointed ending. Towards Zero opens May 31 and runs through June 22. Tickets are available at thecolonialplayers.org or by calling 410-268-7373. - 12 - 2018/2019 season THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE TO OUR CONTRIBUTORS COLONIAL Welcome to Colonial Players. • Artistry Presents William Finn's Autobiographical Musical a NEW BRAIN, Opening October 18
Bloomington Center for the Arts 952-563-8575 1800 W Old Shakopee Rd artistrymn.org Bloomington, MN 55431 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Devon Cox, Associate Producer & Director of Theater Marketing 952-563-8564, [email protected] Artistry Presents William Finn's Autobiographical Musical A NEW BRAIN, opening October 18 (Bloomington, MN) Artistry is excited to present A New Brain, taking place in the Schneider Theater October 18 – November 9, 2019, directed by Benjamin McGovern. Gordon Schwinn is the frustrated composer of a children’s TV show who, on one otherwise ordinary day, collapses into his lunch and wakes up in the hospital. As doctors and nurses fly in and out of his room, trying to figure out what’s wrong with his brain, Gordon drifts in and out of consciousness as he contemplates his life, legacy, and the meaning of music—all while navigating his relationships with his best friend, mother, and boyfriend. Oh, and he’s also being haunted by Mr. Bungee, an imaginary frog and the star of the children’s show he’s supposed to be composing for. A semi-autobiographical musical by Tony Award-winning composer William Finn, A New Brain features Finn’s signature lyricism and is an unexpectedly funny, relatable, and ultimately touching meditation on how beautiful the world is when we slow down enough to look. Tony-winning composer and lyricist William Finn is known for his quirky, witty and heartfelt musicals. His best-known shows, Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, were both Tony-award winners. Finn is a heavily autobiographical writer, and as a result his musicals often feel extremely intimate and personal.

  • The Music of William Finn
Edge Publications runs a series of different entertainment websites geared to the gay communities of Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Fire Island, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Providence, Provincetown and San Francisco April 22, 2011 Songs Of Innocence & Experience: The Music Of William Finn By J. Peter Bergman In thirteen songs drawn from six of songwriter William Finn’s many projects, novice recording artist Lisa Howard presents a picture of Finn’s world and mind and illuminates with talent and style the inner inspirational force of the creator of these ditties. What emerges, really, is the unique style of his work. The stage works represented go back to 1989’s Romance in Hard Times and Falsettos in 1992 and continue through The Royal Family of Broadway (1994), A New Brain (1998) and Elegies: A Song Cycle (2003) with two songs from 2005’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. Among the best of them is "I Don’t Know Why You Love Me" from The Royal Family... A genuine period sound pervades this minor show-stopper sung with Derrick Baskin who scats with the best. In fact all four of the songs from this show are gems. They are also the only ones that sound like another composer was involved in the work. Finn’s songs tend to become one long number without the four cited above, somewhat similar to one another. Two other exceptions to this represent the best and worst of his work. "Sailing," beautifully performed by Howard with guitar accompaniment by Matt Hinkley from "A New Brain" is one of the finest pieces in Finn’s lexicon.

Producing contemporary musical theatre. Inspiring Toronto audiences. Study Guide for Students Brief Overview Study Guide Purpose This study guide is designed for both teachers and students who will be attending Acting Up Stage Company’s production of William Finn's Elegies: A Song Cycle. This study guide provides information on the show, the creators, the cast, some additional context and explanation, and various activities that can be completed to enhance the theatre experience. Brief Overview of Elegies How do we deal with loss in a post 9/11 world? Through the 18 stories told onstage, Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) pays tribute to relatives and friends, long-lost pets, and the victims of 9/11, celebrating those who have passed on. Often hilarious, always touching, and very poignant, Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in, and life’s infinite joys. Five singers (three men, two women) take on different roles throughout the cycle, sometimes assuming the voice of a friend or loved one, and sometimes inhabiting Finn himself. No matter how specific Finn gets—be it a street address, the name of a recalcitrant dog, or a friend’s favourite vacation spot—these songs are as much about our lives as his. We see in each character shades of those closest to us, our family and our friends—the family we choose. History of Acting Up Stage Company Acting Up Stage Company was incorporated in May 2004 as a non-for-profit organization dedicated to producing, developing and advancing the versatile art of musical theatre in Canada.

Producing contemporary musical theatre. Inspiring Toronto audiences. Study Guide for Students Brief Overview Study Guide Purpose This study guide is designed for both teachers and students who will be attending Acting Up Stage Company’s production of William Finn’s Falsettos. This study guide provides information on the show, the creators, the cast, some additional context and explanation, and various drama activities that can be completed to enhance the theatre experience. Brief Overview of Falsettos Falsettos is set at the beginning of the 1980’s. As the sexual revolution comes to a halting close with the appearance of a mysterious disease affecting primarily gay men, the tides of politics, social dynamics and reactionary measures begin to shift in New York and across the continent. Meanwhile, Marvin, a Jewish father, has left his wife and son for another man, but despite his personal attractions is still trying all methods of constructing a ‘tight knit family.’ As each of the characters enters therapy with Mendel, a psychiatrist, we learn about their hopes, their fears and their attitudes towards this time of significant change. Told through a series of rapid fire vignettes and heightened theatrical stylization, Falsettos remains the most important musical of the AIDS era. Examining not only the specifics surrounding the rise of the epidemic, this profoundly funny and enlightening musical opens up discussions about tolerance, mental health and, most significantly, the nature of family. History of Acting Up Stage Company Acting Up Stage incorporated in May 2004 as a not-for-profit organization under the leadership of Mitchell Marcus. The company looks to fill a unique niche in the Toronto theatre scene by producing intimate musicals at reasonable prices from Canadian and international authors that will attract a younger generation of audience members.

  • Communicating in Song: the American Sung-Through Musical from in Trousers (1979) to Caroline, Or Change (2004)
Communicating in Song: The American Sung-Through Musical from In Trousers (1979) to Caroline, or Change (2004) A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Alexandre Bádue BM, Federal University of Paraná, 2007 MM, University of Cincinnati, 2012 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT In the American musical theater, the book musical has always presented a conspicuous alternation of songs and spoken dialogue. The former interrupt the latter and provides additional means to depict the characters and the dramatic situations. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, however, a second subgenre of the musical came to prominence: the sung-through musical, in which the entire script—monologues, conversations, turning points—all occur in song, eschewing spoken dialogue and contrasting with the aesthetics of the book musical. This dissertation demonstrates that by avoiding spoken dialogue and increasing the amount of music, American sung-through musicals from 1979 until 2004 challenged the means of structuring musicals. This study investigates how creative teams of sung-through musicals have used songs alone to create, organize, and communicate dramaturgy, questioning the limits between singing and speaking in musical theater. This study comprises twelve sung-through musicals that were written and composed in the United States and originally produced in New York City’s Broadway or Off-Broadway circuits. It does not consider the British sung-through musicals that were successful on Broadway during the same time period.
