Artistry Presents William Finn's Autobiographical Musical a NEW BRAIN, Opening October 18 Bloomington Center for the Arts 952-563-8575 1800 W Old Shakopee Rd artistrymn.org Bloomington, MN 55431 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Devon Cox, Associate Producer & Director of Theater Marketing 952-563-8564, [email protected] Artistry Presents William Finn's Autobiographical Musical A NEW BRAIN, opening October 18 (Bloomington, MN) Artistry is excited to present A New Brain, taking place in the Schneider Theater October 18 – November 9, 2019, directed by Benjamin McGovern. Gordon Schwinn is the frustrated composer of a children’s TV show who, on one otherwise ordinary day, collapses into his lunch and wakes up in the hospital. As doctors and nurses fly in and out of his room, trying to figure out what’s wrong with his brain, Gordon drifts in and out of consciousness as he contemplates his life, legacy, and the meaning of music—all while navigating his relationships with his best friend, mother, and boyfriend. Oh, and he’s also being haunted by Mr. Bungee, an imaginary frog and the star of the children’s show he’s supposed to be composing for. A semi-autobiographical musical by Tony Award-winning composer William Finn, A New Brain features Finn’s signature lyricism and is an unexpectedly funny, relatable, and ultimately touching meditation on how beautiful the world is when we slow down enough to look. Tony-winning composer and lyricist William Finn is known for his quirky, witty and heartfelt musicals. His best-known shows, Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, were both Tony-award winners. Finn is a heavily autobiographical writer, and as a result his musicals often feel extremely intimate and personal. "Among his distinguishing talents, perhaps the greatest is his ability to turn complicated but natural conversation and intricate interior thought into song,” Says New York Times Critic Charles Isherwood. "The seams between words and music never show." A New Brain is based on his own medical crisis, and the characters in the show are based on his own family and friends – many people say that the character of Gordon’s best friend, Rhoda, is based on Playwright Wendy Wasserstein. Benjamin McGovern, Producing Artistic Director, will direct all productions in Artistry’s 2019- 2020 Season. Before landing at Artistry in 2015, McGovern worked as a Director and Arts Administrator for many local companies, including the Guthrie Theater and Theatre de la Jeune Lune. He will be joined for the whole season by Artistry’s Resident Music Director, Anita Ruth. The cast of A New Brain includes some of the best singing actors in the Twin Cities, many returning to Artistry. Riley McNutt and C Ryan Shipley return to Artistry as Gordon Schwinn and Roger Delli-Bovi. McNutt is an accomplished Twin Cities actor and singer who has taken on roles at Theatre Latté Da (Henrik in A Little Night Music, All is Calm), Minnesota Orchestra, and Trademark Theatre. Shipley is a frequent Artistry collaborator, who most recently appeared in She Loves Me (Sipos) and Mary Poppins (Bert). Also appearing in A New Brain are Bradley Greenwald (Mr. Bungee), Jen Burleigh-Bentz (Mimi Schwinn), Mary Palazzolo (Lisa, A Homeless Woman), Rodolfo Nieto (Dr. Jafar Berensteiner), Caitlin Burns (Rhoda), Evan Tyler Wilson (Richard, the Nice Nurse), Sarah DeYong (Waitress/Nancy D.) and Reese Britts (The Minister). Heidi Spesard-Noble will choreograph, returning to Artistry after this summer’s Footloose. Artistry is an award-winning producing theater and visual arts non-profit and the anchor tenant at Bloomington Center for the Arts. Strongly committed to bringing vibrant and diverse arts experiences and learning to our community, we produce a wide variety of work that informs and illuminates the South Metro. A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.

  • INTO the WOODS Stephen Sondheim (Music and Lyrics) and James Lapine (Book) Directed by Susi Damilano Music Director: Dave Dobrusky Choreography: Kimberly Richards
Press Release For immediate release May 2014 [email protected] Download Hi Res photos here INTO THE WOODS Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) Directed by Susi Damilano Music Director: Dave Dobrusky Choreography: Kimberly Richards June 24th to September 6th Previews June 24 – June 27 at 8pm Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm Saturdays at 3pm and Sundays at 2pm (except 6/29) PRESS OPENING: Saturday, June 28th at 8pm San Francisco, CA (May 2014) – San Francisco Playhouse (Artistic Director Bill English & Producing Director Susi Damilano) concludes its provocative eleventh season with Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book). What happens after “happily ever after?” Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of “The Twilight Zone.” While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack in the Beanstalk and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical intertwines classic fairytales with a contemporary edge to tell stories of wishes granted and “the price” paid. Susi Damilano (Director), Dave Dobrusky (Music Director) and Kimberly Richards (Choreographer) will team up to bring a fresh twist to this familiar tale by adding a time-travelling boy, Ian DeVaynes to the Bay Area cast that features: Louis Parnell* (Narrator), Safiya Fredericks* (Witch), El Beh (Baker’s Wife), Keith Pinto* (Baker), Tim Homsley* (Jack), Joan Mankin* (Jack’s Mom), Monique Hafen* (Cinderella), Becka Fink (Cinderella’s Stepmom), identical twins, Lily and Michelle Drexler (Cinderella’s Stepsisters), Noelani Neal (Rapunzel), Corinne Proctor (Red), Ryan McCrary and Jeffrey Adams (Princes/Wolves) and John Paul Gonzales (Steward).

  • The Music of William Finn
Edge Publications runs a series of different entertainment websites geared to the gay communities of Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Fire Island, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Providence, Provincetown and San Francisco April 22, 2011 Songs Of Innocence & Experience: The Music Of William Finn By J. Peter Bergman In thirteen songs drawn from six of songwriter William Finn’s many projects, novice recording artist Lisa Howard presents a picture of Finn’s world and mind and illuminates with talent and style the inner inspirational force of the creator of these ditties. What emerges, really, is the unique style of his work. The stage works represented go back to 1989’s Romance in Hard Times and Falsettos in 1992 and continue through The Royal Family of Broadway (1994), A New Brain (1998) and Elegies: A Song Cycle (2003) with two songs from 2005’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. Among the best of them is "I Don’t Know Why You Love Me" from The Royal Family... A genuine period sound pervades this minor show-stopper sung with Derrick Baskin who scats with the best. In fact all four of the songs from this show are gems. They are also the only ones that sound like another composer was involved in the work. Finn’s songs tend to become one long number without the four cited above, somewhat similar to one another. Two other exceptions to this represent the best and worst of his work. "Sailing," beautifully performed by Howard with guitar accompaniment by Matt Hinkley from "A New Brain" is one of the finest pieces in Finn’s lexicon.
