The essence of this theology is the teaching that Christians have a right to wealth and health through positive confession and is based on a selection of texts in the Bible. The prosperity gospel, on closer examination, is the result of a very particular view of the Bible. The Bible is primarily seen as a faith contract between God and believers. Along this way, God is manipulated by the believer to fulfill his or her wants or desires. -

SESSION SIX New Testament Study Overview: What God has done in the Old Testament He continues to do in the New. God began a pattern for fund- ing workers that carries right on through the New Testament and gives us a model for today. In this session we will discuss the numerous instances of partnership and its spiritual fruit, focusing in on Paul’s relationship with his partners. The goal of this teaching is to show that there is a significant culture of partnership in the New Testament. New Testament perspective of laboring—with partnership The New Testament is a continuation of the unfolding story of the restoration of all things. God stewards His own purpose through the voluntary agreement of His people. His approach is the same; the giving of the saints is His preferred way of advancing His kingdom. Stewardship and partnership are natural byproducts when the family of God walks in spiritual health. 1Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, pro- claiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2and also some women who had Notice that Jesus, been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magda- lene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3and Joanna, the –God in the flesh– put wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and Himself in a position many others, who provided for them out of their means. THROUGH THE BIBLE TITUS 1-3 Years ago Leslie Flynn wrote a book entitled, “Great Church Fights.” He documented cases of just how contentious and hostile church members can become. Ask any pastor who’s been around the block a time or two, and he’ll tell you that ministry is a contact sport! It’s sad when the Church becomes a cage fight. Yet Titus, not just Leslie Flynn, could’ve written a book entitled, “Great Church Fights.” He was sent by Paul to pastor an ornery church on the island of Crete. In describing the Cretans in 1:12, Paul quotes a local author who characterized his own people as, “always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons…” - not very flattering… And Titus had been asked to pastor the Cretan church. Obviously, a church full of very cranky people. Here’s the question that prompted Paul’s letter to Titus, “how do you oversee rambunctious people?” The book of Titus expresses one certainty - to deal with difficult people strong leadership is essential! In three chapters Paul condenses the instructions he communicated in his first letter to Timothy. He provides Titus a crash course in effective spiritual leadership… Verse 1 is the author’s intro, “Paul, a bondservant of God...” Slavery in Israel was used to pay off a person’s debts. Often, a slave ended up serving a kind and benevolent master, and 1 lived a better life in his master’s house than he could ever achieve on his own. In response, sometimes these freed slaves would forego their liberty to remain in the master’s household. -

Many people think that the Pastorals have nothing to say to them because they are not planning to be pastors. Further, the letters are addressed specifically to Timothy and Titus. But Paul expected these epistles to be read by believers. Consider the plural “you” that occurs at the end of each letter (1 Tim 6:21; 2 Tim 4:22; Titus 3:15) which indicates that Paul had not just his specific addressees in view as he wrote but also the church. So, all believers today should read and study these epistles and pastors should preach them. A flurry of scholarly activity has taken place recently on the Pastoral Epistles—the contributors listed below add their articles to the mix. -
THE EVANGELIST: a Biblical Study
Gareth L. Reese has been teaching the Word of God to students at Central Christian College of the Bible since 1957. As an author, Professor Reese THE has written extensive course materials in a verse-by-verse commentary on twenty-fve books of the New Testament EVANGELIST: and a syllabus of 400 pages of supplementary notes for use in Greek classes. A Biblical Study His frst book, New Testament History: Acts, has been used as a textbook at many Bible colleges. It has been translated into Russian and Portuguese. In addition to the syllabi, he has also published nine commentaries. Those commentaries contain various special studies on scripture that are relevant to the passage. This booklet is one of those special studies, taken from his commentary on Romans. His wife and partner in ministry and publication is Kathleen by Beerbower Reese. The Reeses were blessed with two sons, Timothy (Kim) and Jonathan (Kathy). They also have three Gareth L. Reese grandchildren, Abby, Courtney, and Ian. This special study examines the different evangelists of the New Testament church, the qualifcations of evangelists in the New Testament, and the duties of evangelists for today’s church. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 1 Timothy 6:17-Paul Tells Timothy To Command The Rich To Not Be Arrogant Or Place Their Confidence Upon Riches But On God 1 Timothy 6:17-19 In 1 Timothy 5:1-6:2, the apostle Paul gives instructions to Timothy with regards to various groups in the Ephesian Christian community. In 1 Timothy 5:1- 2, he gives instructions to Timothy with regards to his proper treatment of older and younger men and women in the church. This is followed by an extended discussion of a problem concerning widows in 1 Timothy 5:3-16. Then, in 1 Timothy 5:17-25, he addresses the proper treatment of elders and need to exercise caution when ordaining men to be overseers. Lastly, in Timothy 6:1-2, the apostle discusses the proper conduct of Christian slaves towards their masters. By these instructions, Paul is describing the Christian community as a family that is to operate according to God’s love by the power of the Spirit. The members of this family are to show proper respect and honor toward each other. This family has responsibilities and an authority structure build into it. Now, in 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Paul will address a fifth and final group, namely those Christians who were rich. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 concludes that portion of the epistle that is directed specifically at the Ephesian Christian community. 1 Timothy 6:19-20 concludes not only the epistle but also that portion of the epistle that is directed specifically to Timothy. -

PAUL’S LIFE AND TEACHINGS Lesson 33 Paul’s Letter to Philemon Have you ever felt the need to try and convince someone to do something you thought important? Think through the times you have been either the persuader or the one that another has tried to persuade. What was the technique used for persuasion? Was it cold, clear logic? Was it an emotional appeal? Did someone try to frighten you into agreement? Was there some threat involved or the use of some emotional manipulation? As a trial lawyer, I live a professional life of persuasion. I have seen trials where each of the above approaches were used in varying degrees and with varying success. It is always interesting to see how lawyers try to convince a jury to follow the attorney’s lead and give a sought after decision. One of my favorite efforts came in a trial in a small Texas town where I was the principal trial lawyer for a fellow who had been hurt in a boat rescue operation. I was convinced that the defendants in the case had not been honest with the jury, but had riddled their testimony with inaccurate stories. On the jury sat the small town Baptist preacher. I knew he was a preacher. The judge knew he was a preacher; and the jury knew he was a preacher. I believe several of the jurors attended his church! Since we all knew the preacher was likely the foreperson of the jury, I directed some of my closing argument to him, thinking if I persuaded him, I could more easily persuade the rest of the jury. -

Coming in First Place – The Book of Colossians The Christian’s Experience – Putting On: Sanctified Fellowship (4:718) Sanctified Fellowship (4:1418) – Demas, Nympha, Archippus and Paul 14 Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and also Demas. 15 Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea and also Nympha and the church that is in her house. 16 When this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part read my letter that is coming from Laodicea. 17 Say to Archippus, "Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it." 18 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my imprisonment. Grace be with you. If you could read my notes, you would see that the persons I intend to speak to you about this morning include everyone found in verses 1418 with the exception of the very first person named, which is Luke. There is a reasonable explanation for this. Most of you know that beginning in February we are starting a new series on Sunday mornings from the book of Acts. Most of you are also aware that Luke, the very Luke mentioned in Colossians 4:14, is the author of that book. Therefore, on the advice and insight of one of the men in the church, we will look at what the lives of the remaining people of our text teach us of church life, sanctification and Christlikeness and leave Luke for next week to serve as our transition from Colossians to the book of Acts.
