Cyril and Methodius. I have not prepared a written paper for this scientific conference as I had not submitted the application form for participation. However, I had the privilege of being introduced by His Excellency, Dr. Pande Lazarevski, Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia in Romania and asked to deliver a speech for which I am very much obliged. I would like to take this opportunity to send warmest regards on behalf of the Chancellor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, Dr. Velimir Stojkovski. For the last couple of days I too have felt like being on a mission by visiting four Romanian universities and faculties of theology, a mission quite similar to the one that took place 1150 years ago and which was led by our great masters and spiritual enlighteners, the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius. Today, together with my companion, hieromonk Dr. Grigorij (Nasteski) we have come dressed in the attire of the holy brothers to express the symbolism of their mien and movement. The entire Slavic world has witnessed and experienced Ss. Cyril and Methodius’ contribution to the cultural development of the Slavic peoples. I shall mention only a few examples: They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet according to the vocal system of the dialect spoken by Slavs living in Thessaloniki and its surrounding. They started a translating tradition that is still alive today across the Slavic world. They made the Gospel texts, or the Bible, comprehensive for the laity. Their translations later served to be the basis of the Bible translations in Slavic modern languages. https://biblioteca-digitala.ro ROMANOSLAVICA vol. XLIX, nr. 2 They translated several Liturgical books from Greek into Slavic, thus providing an opportunity for the Slavs to participate in the Divine Liturgy that is always enlightening, sanctifying and redeeming. They demonstrated a true defence of one’s own mother tongue, dignity, and sacrifice for a life of eternity. Respected students, allow me to say a few words about the tradition of the holy brothers in Macedonia. Take into consideration the following: If it were not for their most talented students, the holy brothers Clement and Naum from Macedonia, the work of Ss. Cyril and Methodius would have been forgotten. If it were not for the Ohrid literary centre we would have neither other literary centres nor manuscript literary heritage as we have today. Last Monday while visiting the University of Craiova we donated several Slavic books and in return we were presented with a transcript of the Gospel manuscript by the hegumen Nikodim of Prilep of Tismana with an incredibly rich illumination dating from the second half of the 14th century. I am quite certain that you are familiar with the value of this piece of work. Also, Craiova is the city where back in the 16th century Father Jovan Kratovski from Macedonia proceeded with Ss. Cyril and Methodous’ tradition, as well as his burial place. He completed several marvellous illuminated transcripts of the Gospels, of which one was dedicated to the Duke of Michna. He is famed for his apophtegme: ‘the hand that writes putrefies in the grave, but the book lives forever’. At the end I would like to remind you of the two researchers from Macedonia which are intensively engaged in research studies regarding the Cyril and Methodous’ tradition: the academician Dr. Gjorgji Pop-Atanasov and Dr. Ilija Velev. I wish you great success with the work at this International Scientific Conference. Bucharest, 14 July 2013 8 https://biblioteca-digitala.ro CHIRIL ŞI METODIE ÎN CULTURA SLOVACĂ Dagmar Maria ANOCA In this paper, in which we present some aspects of Slovak culture as marked by the tradition which was established after the activity and presence of the two missionaries – Constantine the Philosopher – Cyril (863-869) and Methodius (863-885) – on the territory of current Slovakia, we wish to underline the importance of these two personalities of European culture. Beginning with the emancipation of Slovak ethnicity from the stage of a people to the stage of a nation, which started in the seventeenth century, the two names become landmarks, and a tradition establishes itself, becoming a source for the ideas of Slovak art and literature.

    Physical Description of Manuscripts

Digital Editing of Medieval Manuscripts - Intellectual Output 1: Resources for Editing Medieval Texts (Paleography, Codicology, Philology) Physical Description of Manuscripts Michal Dragoun (Charles University in Prague) The description method, composition, and description parts and the level of detail have developed in the course of time. Often, the only tool available for codices in Prague libraries are catalogues dating back to early 1900s. Description in these catalogues frequently consists of just a few lines, whereas manuscript descriptions in modern catalogues can be tens of pages long. When describing a manuscript, the purpose of the description should be considered. Information can be added and descriptions improved infinitely. However, there comes a point when adding further information is not worth the time it takes. Even a description of just one more manuscript will require diverse approaches when entered in a new, enlarged edition. Individual countries have their rules for describing manuscripts, and these generally differ only in particulars. (Different, more detailed guidelines for specifically defined lists usually exist.) As for nearby countries, let us mention German guidelines; compared to Czech guidelines, formal instructions differ slightly and cataloguers prefer briefer descriptions (http://bilder.manuscripta- mediaevalia.de/hs//kataloge/HSKRICH.htm, quoted on April 30, 2017). Compliance with the guidelines depends mainly on quantity of extant material. In extreme cases, one country may treasure in all its libraries less manuscripts than another country has in just one library. The following sections and the description method used works on principles applied in the Czech Republic. The rules were published (J. Pražák – F. Hoffmann – J. Kejř – I.
