QUARTETTO DI CREMONA Since its formation in 2000, the Quartetto di Cremona has established a reputation as one of the most exciting chamber ensembles on the international stage, garnered universal acclaim for its high level of interpretive artistry. The 2019/20 season includes a tour in North America and one in Holland, performances of the complete Beethoven quartets’ cycle in Italy, Albania and Taiwan, concerts in Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland and Scandinavia, as well as several recitals at the major Italian musical institutions. 2020/21 season’s highlights include concerts in Geneva, Milan, Rome, at the Wigmore Hall in London and the debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2020 the Quartetto di Cremona celebrates its first twenty years of career, an important milestone for an Italian ensemble. For the occasion, distinguished concerts and record projects will be developed over consecutive seasons: several performances of the complete Beethoven quartets’ cycle, further CDs’ releases, a tour with Bach’s “The Art of the Fugue”, new music expressly composed for the Quartet. Noteworthy previous recording projects include the prizewinning Beethoven’s string quartets cycle, completed in 2018, and a double CD dedicated to Schubert, released in Spring 2019 and featuring cellist Eckart Runge, which attracted high levels of acclaim in the international press. This latter album was recorded with the Stradivarius set of instruments named “Paganini Quartet”, on kind loan from the Nippon Music Foundation (Tokyo). Frequently invited to present masterclasses in Europe, Asia, North and South America, since 2011 they are Professors at the “Walter Stauffer Academy” in Cremona.

The Noûs Quartet, formed in 2011, has established itself in a short time as one of the most interesting chamber music ensemble of its generation. Its immersive performances are the result of a professional training where the Italian tradition and the most influencial European schools are combined. The quartet studied with the Quartetto di Cremona at the Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona, at the Basel Musik Akademie with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), at the Escuela Superior de Música 'Reina Sofia' in Madrid and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena with Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet) and at the Lübeck Musikhochschule with Heime Müller (Artemis Quartet). In 2014 the Noûs Quartet was selected to take part in the project 'Le Dimore del Quartetto' thanks to which it won a scholarship. During the same year it was awarded another important scholarship offered by the Foundatión Albeniz of Madrid. In 2015 the quartet was awarded the Piero Farulli Prize, given to the best emerging chamber music group in the current year, as part of the XXXIV Franco Abbiati Award, the most prestigious Italian music critics award. It received from La Fenice Theatre, Venice, the Arthur Rubinstein – Una Vita nella Musica 2015 Award …for establishing itself in a mere few years as one of the most promising Italian chamber music groups and for displaying, early in its career, its maturity of approach to the great string quartet literature; for seeking a reasoned and lasting interpretation of the masterpieces of the Classical-Romantic period and of the twentieth century, together with a determined and ongoing exploration of the contemporary music language.

Having completed its recording series of the complete Beethoven string quartets, it seemed natural to move on to Franz Schubert, a composer to whom the four musicians feel a strong affinity in terms of per- formance aesthetics, technical qualities and musical sensitivity. In their interpretation of the famous string quintet, all this strongly connects them to Eckart Runge, himself a string quartet performer of thirty years as cellist of the Artemis Quartet and a versatile soloist, about whom the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said: “If his sound does not make you cry, you have no heart.” Schubert’s Chamber Music legacy Franz Schubert’s profound connection with chamber music began in his early youth, when he played the viola in his family’s string quartet with his father and brothers.

  • Current Review
Current Review Ludwig van Beethoven: Complete String Quartets - Vol. 1 aud 92.680 EAN: 4022143926807 4022143926807 Fanfare (Jerry Dubins - 2013.10.01) Ordinarily, in our headers, we adopt Americanized spellings and abbreviations for ensemble names. In normal circumstances then, I would have given the name of the Quartetto di Cremona as Cremona Qrt. But as far back as 2000, in issue 23:3, John Lambert reviewed a two-CD Musical Heritage Society set titled Julian Bream and Friends, which featured an ensemble named Cremona String Quartet. ArkivMusic lists that still available entry along with this new Audite release under the same Cremona String Quartet heading, but unless every single member of the ensemble has changed since the MHS recording, it’s very doubtful that the current Quartetto di Cremona is the same Cremona String Quartet of yore, which is why I spelled out its formal, official name. Members of the Quartetto di Cremona ensemble are Cristiano Gualco and Paolo Andreoli, violins; Simone Gramaglia, viola; and Giovanni Scaglione, cello; and the present album is announced as Volume 1 in a new cycle of Beethoven’s complete string quartets. The reader, not to mention the reviewer, glutted with a seemingly endless supply of these works, may shrug his shoulders, yawn, and say, “ho-hum,” but this latest entry is one that compels you to sit up and take notice. Here we have performances that go beyond the now expected new normal of execution-perfect in every way, and that enter into that special domain reserved for the exceptional and the exalted among surveyors of this repertoire.

This circumstance, however, is not down to inferior quality or exotic scoring of the string quintet, but to the specialisation of our music business. Although the repertoire for string quintet is first-rate, it is not particularly extensive: this explains the small number of steady ensembles in that formation. Instead, string quartets tend to invite the miss ing fifth player (a second viola or cello) who then needs to blend into the established group – a task which he or she performs as a foreign body or, as in this case, as a refreshing, spontaneous partner.

Allegro molto QUARTETTO DI CREMONA Cristiano Gualco, Violine Paolo Andreoli, Violine Simone Gramaglia, Viola Giovanni Scaglione, Violoncello “For it is only now that I know how to write quartets…” The performance culture and market for the string quartet in the late eighteenth cen- tury was markedly different to that of later times. In practice, professional quartets only existed at court chapels, whilst the large majority of quartets were made up of talented amateurs. The fact that these (mostly aristocratic) enthusiasts mastered their instruments much better than today’s amateur musicians is proved by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Quartets Op. 18 which, to their young composer, represented uncharted waters. Naturally, he looked towards models such as Haydn and Mozart for guidance and inspiration: several copies in his hand show a meticulous examination of the quar- tets of his older colleagues. Nonetheless, during the early years in his adoptive home city of Vienna, the celebrated piano virtuoso had been careful to avoid the quartet, instead delving into the realm of the piano trio, the piano sonata and chamber music for wind instruments. Late in 1789, however, the time had come to turn his hand to the genre which required (according to his teacher Haydn) both taste and “compositional scholarship”: two qualities which most quartets written for connoisseurs lacked.
