Supporting Organisations 2 SUMMARY The UK’s counter-terrorism legislation is among the most developed in the world. There is no evidence that the wide-ranging powers, already in place, are in anyway inadequate to investigate and prosecute those involved in any way in the incidents that have recently occurred. Daily reporting of the progress of police investigations suggest that conventional police investigations are piecing together an extensive breadth and range of evidence. There are no suggestions by the police that they have been thwarted in any relevant investigation by any lack of legal powers. The greatest threat to our security comes not from an inability to counter terrorism but the government’s refusal to conduct an honest debate on the causes of the attacks against London in July 2005. In place of that debate, Tony Blair has turned the spotlight on Britain’s Muslim communities. British tolerance has fertilised terrorism, he suggests. Multiculturalism and human rights are to be the scapegoats. In the context of an ill advised and counter productive “war on terror”, these proposals pave the way for an equally misguided “war on Islamic extremism”. There can be no doubt that the measures they envisage – restrictions on free speech, freedom of association and freedom of conscience - coupled with the simplistic and inflammatory portrayal of Islam as a “dangerous” religion, will further alienate and marginalise the very communities in which the government professes to be combating radicalisation. -

She was previously the Director of Student Rights. Emma read for a BA in classical civilisation at the University of Leeds, undertaking several modules in Politics and Philosophy. Whilst at university, she was campaigns Officer for the Jewish Society, organising several interfaith and charity events. She was also involved in mental health awareness across campus and in local schools. Prior to joining the Henry Jackson Society, Emma worked as a magazine researcher at Time Inc; as a Public Affairs intern; and taught classics. Trojan Horse plot driven by same 'warped' Islamic extremism as Boko Haram, says Tony Blair Birmingham schools 'plot' is part of extremist movement stretching from Pakistan to Africa to Britain, former prime minister Tony Blair claims Tony Blair Photo: AFP/GETTY By Matthew Holehouse, Political Correspondent 11:10AM BST 15 Jun 2014 The alleged Islamic extremism seen in the 'Trojan Horse' scandal in schools in Birmingham is the same as that practised by Boko Haram, the Nigerian terrorist network, Tony Blair has said. The Trojan Horse 'plot' to bring hardline practices into Birmingham classrooms is part of a global extremist movement stretching from Britain to Africa to the Far East, the former Prime Minister claimed. Six Birmingham schools are in special measures after the education watchdog found they had fallen into the hands of bullying governors who had sought to narrow the curriculum and exclude non-Muslim pupils. Inspectors told how raffles and tombolas at one primary school been banned from a recent school fête because they were considered “un-Islamic” as they promoted gambling. It was also revealed that the academy's Christmas special assembly was cancelled and a termly assembly staged by a Christian charity had been scrapped. The terms “white prostitute” had been used in assemblies. Sheikh Shady Al-Suleiman – an al-Qaeda sympathiser – had spoken at Park View secondary academy, and the theory of evolution was dismissed by teachers as “not what we believe.” There was evidence boys and girls were segregated in class. Mr Blair said the alleged plot was part of a movement that included extremists in Pakistan and Boko Haram, the Nigerian terrorist group. -

one nation power hope community power hope community Ed Miliband has set out his vision of One Nation: a country where everyone has a stake, prosperity is fairly shared, and we make a common life together. A group of Labour MPs, elected in 2010 and after, describe what this politics of national renewal means to them. It begins in the everyday life of work, family and local place. It is about the importance of having a sense of belonging and community, and sharing power and responsibility with people. It means reforming the state and the market in order to rebuild the economy, share power hope community prosperity, and end the living standards crisis. And it means doing politics in a different way: bottom up not top down, organising not managing. A new generation is changing Labour to change the country. Fears that began over terrorism have extended to the opening of Islamic faith schools, the meaning of clothing and halal slaughter. Critical scholarship that engages with these developments in the fields of politics and international relations tends to view them through paradigms of (in)security. Whilst these contributions have been helpful in understanding the construction of a Muslim 'problem', this article demonstrates how the array of issues incorporated by this problem exceeds the politics of security. The article develops an original conceptual and analytic framework, drawing upon Slavoj Žižek's Lacanian theory of ideology, to argue that political and media ‘scandals’ about what an imagined 'Muslim community' gets up to are best understood as ideological fantasies. -

ISLAMIC RADICALIZATION IN THE UK: INDEX OF RADICALIZATION Anna Wojtowicz, (Research Assistant, ICT) Sumer 2012 ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to analyze the process of radicalization amongst British Muslims in the United Kingdom. It begins with a review of the Muslim population, demographics and community structure. Further presenting several internal and external indicators that influenced and led to radicalization of Muslim youth in Britain. The paper concludes that there is no one certainty for what causes radicalization amongst Muslims in United Kingdom. However, it is certain that Islamic radicalization and the emergence of a homegrown threat is a growing trend that jeopardizes the countries security, peace and stability. Radicalization in the United Kingdom is an existing concern that needs to be addressed and acted upon immediately. OPEN LETTER TO THE PM TO BE SIGNED BY MPS AND PEERS The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP Prime Minister Office of the Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London, SW1A 2AA May 2020 Dear Prime Minister Subject: OPEN LETTER FROM MPS & PEERS: COVID-19: THEATRE & THE PERFORMING ARTS SECTOR, WHAT’S NEEDED FOR SURVIVAL & RECOVERY Whilst we know you are considering how best to protect and support many areas of the economy, this letter summarises the current and future impact of COVID-19 on performing arts businesses around the UK and calls on you and your teams in DCMS, Treasury and BEIS to take action on what is needed immediately; and over the coming months to rescue the sector and allow theatre to contribute to the future success of the UK. The performing arts’ contribution to the UK: economic & social British theatre (from drama to musical theatre to opera to dance) is a world-class cultural and economic force with British theatrical productions filling cultural venues and theatres from Broadway to Beijing. From small studios to big-budget stages, theatre and the performing arts are part of the fabric of British life. Towns, villages and cities the breadth of the UK have and use theatres for more than seeing a show – they are spaces for many different groups in community to come together to learn, socialise and create. As you know, the creative industries are a motor of growth in local economies from the South East to the North West, from Yorkshire and the Humber to the West Midlands. Theatre’s workforce of 290,000 people includes 70% who are self-employed and move freely between scales and sectors. -
MEND Briefing Paper – Islamophobia
Defining Islamophobia Briefing Paper from Muslim Engagement and Development April 2019 As the world recovers from the recent deaths of fifty people in devastating far-right terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, there are few reminders of the danger of Islamophobia that are more poignant. This problem is not new to the UK and its persistent presence in the daily lives of our Muslim communities is a stark reminder that action is needed to combat all forms of hatred which leave innocent individuals vulnerable to marginalisation, discrimination, and even violence. Politicians such as Baroness Sayeeda Warsi have remarked on how Islamophobia “has passed the dinner table test” in the UK. Indeed, looking at patterns of Islamophobic comments amongst prominent members of political parties, it seems Islamophobic beliefs have been afforded an air of legitimacy even amongst our political representatives. To protect our Muslim communities and meaningfully combat Islamophobia, it is essential that policymakers are firstly equipped with a definition with which to identify it. MEND, therefore, urges the UK Government to: 1. Adopt the definition of Islamophobia produced by the APPG (All-Party Parliamentary Group) on British Muslims: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” 2. Apply the above definition in conjunction with the following guidelines: Islamophobia is demonstrated in, and articulated through, speech, writing, behaviours, structures, policies, legislation or activities that work to control, regulate or exclude Muslim participation within social, civic, economic and political life, or which embody hatred, vilification, stereotyping, abuse, or violence directed at Muslims. -

Women from across Labour's team - including Shadow Cabinet members, MPs, councillors, MEPs, peers, AMs, MSPs and members of the GLA as well as from our affiliated trade unions - have joined the Woman to Woman tour. We have been highlighting all of Labour's key policies on the NHS, on the economy, on housing, education and immigration - but also issues of childcare, equal pay, tackling domestic violence, older women and women's representation.
