  • 1 Jess Rudolph Shogi
Jess Rudolph Shogi – the Chess of Japan Its History and Variants When chess was first invented in India by the end of the sixth century of the current era, probably no one knew just how popular or wide spread the game would become. Only a short time into the second millennium – if not earlier – chess was being played as far as the most distant lands of the known world – the Atlantic coast of Europe and Japan. All though virtually no contact existed for centuries to come between these lands, people from both cultures were playing a game that was very similar; in Europe it was to become the chess most westerners know today and in Japan it was shogi – the Generals Game. Though shogi has many things in common with many other chess variants, those elements are not always clear because of the many differences it also has. Sadly, how the changes came about is not well known since much of the early history of shogi has been lost. In some ways the game is more similar to the Indian chaturanga than its neighboring cousin in China – xiangqi. In other ways, it’s closer to xiangqi than to any other game. In even other ways it has similarities to the Thai chess of makruk. Most likely it has elements from all these lands. It is generally believed that chess came to Japan from China through the trade routs in Korea in more than one wave, the earliest being by the end of tenth century, possibly as early as the eighth.

  • Chaturanga Through the Ages: a Game of Elephants, Generals, and Madwomen
Chaturanga Through the Ages: a Game of Elephants, Generals, and Madwomen The turn based strategy game is a time honored format of competition which has been enjoyed for millenia, and through those millenia there have been no more iconic, influential, or widespread games of this genre than those of the Chaturanga family. Played by king and pauper alike, this family of games has always been greatly respected and deeply cherished by every culture it has touched. In those instances where a version has fallen out of style, it is almost always because of the rising popularity of another game of the same family, and more often than not it will be periodically revived every couple hundred years in small pockets of enthusiasts. In this work I have attempted to provide an overview of the games of the Chaturanga family as they moved through history, interacting with, influencing and being influenced by the many cultures they touched as they grew, evolved, and entranced. As such, I have provided my entries in as chronological an order as the uncertainties of millenia-old accounts will allow. Chaturanga – Four Arms 5th Century CE The name Chaturanga comes from a compound of the Sanskrit catuh (four) and anga (arm) and is often poetically synonymous with “army”. The original usage comes from the Mahabharata, in which it refers to the four major divisions of the army, these being the infantry, chariots, cavalry, and elephants. The passage specifically speaks of a military formation called an 'akshauhini' consisting of 218,700 units, these being 21,870 chariots and as many elephants, 65,610 horses, and 109,350 infantry1 the ratio between chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry being 1:1:3:5.

  • The History of the Ajinomoto Group
The History of the Ajinomoto Group The History of the Ajinomoto Group Fiscal Years 2009 - 2019 Fiscal Years 2009 - 2019 The History of the Ajinomoto Group Fiscal Years 2009 - 2019 Greetings The Ajinomoto Group celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2019. This history has seen a mountain of difficulties and victories. Twenty years ago, in 1999, our operating profits were 33 billion yen. In the years that followed, although bulk businesses such as animal nutrition grew, profits slumped due to intensifying competition, and we were unable to achieve stable growth. Then in 2009 we marked our 100-year anniversary. During the period between 2009 and 2019—this “10-Year History”—we worked to shift our focus from an over-reliance on bulk business to one that contributes to the enrichment of people’s lives around the world. This illustrated our aim of becoming a Genuine Global Specialty Company (GGSC). We then launched strategies such as our “FIT & GROW with Specialty” and “Open New Sky (expansion into adjacent domains, Open & Linked innovation),” to achieve growth with a focus on our overseas consumer business. However, it also became clear that there were challenges to overcome. These included global digitalization and changes in the macro environment, especially more intense competition for bulk materials and the rise of local companies. In addition, we faced the internal challenge of having a business structure that made it difficult to generate economic value because we had a strong managerial focus on scale. In order to resolve these issues, we believe that improvements to capital efficiency and steady organic growth in our key businesses are essential for the growth of the Group.

I would like to thank all the shogi friends, who have answered my long questionnaire, shared many important data or spend literally days on exchanging emails with me.

His Tori Shogi (Bird Chess), so called because all of the pieces have the names of birds, is broadly based upon normal Shogi but is played on a board with only seven squares each way and a total of 32 pieces. Historical game scores for Shogi variants are extremely rare but we are, however, fortunate in having no fewer than eight ancient professional games of Tori Shogi, all played as long ago as 1830. Several top players of the day gathered at the house of Toyota Shirohi in August of that year and these game scores come from that meeting.
