I’ve been with Anime Fusion since it was a conversation between three people in the wave pool at Valleyfair. We all had the destination in mind, but I doubt any of us could have envisioned the path that lay ahead. It was a road pitted with challenges: resource shortfalls, communication issues, staff changes, conflicting ideas and the sheer enormity of what we’d taken on. At its end we find ourselves in a place unlike what any of us imagined, but a place that is our own, a place we’re excited to share with you. This is Anime Fusion. A home for the best of what anime is today, but a place that also remembers its roots. Like the convention itself, anime has come a long way. In style, content, medium and structure, modern anime is very different from the classics, but without what came before, we wouldn’t be where we are now. The past gives us our foundation and the building blocks of what’s to come. Its high points leave us fond memories to treasure, and its rough spots teach us skills to improve. So go forth into our world. Embrace the new, but value the road that brought you here. Heather Bufkin Convention Chair Anime Fusion 2012 A Note from the Vice Chair Don’t break the hotel.

  • Japanese Visual Language the Structure of Manga
Japanese Visual Language The Structure of Manga By Neil Cohn ABSTRACT Over the past two decades, manga has exploded in readership beyond Japan, and its style has captured the interest of young artists all over. But, what exactly are the properties of this "style" beyond the surface of big eyes and "backward" reading? This paper explores the structural elements of the Japanese Visual Language (JVL) that comprises the "manga style" — ranging from looking at the “big eyes, small mouth” schema as a “standard” dialect, to examining the graphic emblems that form manga’s conventional visual vocabulary. Particular focus will be given to JVL grammar — the system that creates meaning via sequential images — and how it differs from the visual languages from other parts of the world. On the whole, manga provide an excellent forum for understanding the scope of the visual language paradigm. KEYWORDS: manga, visual language, Japanese comics © Neil Cohn 2007 [email protected] www.emaki.net A version of this paper will appear in the book, Manga: The Essential Reader, published by Continuum Books in 2008. Japanese Visual Language by Neil Cohn Many authors have intuitively associated the “comic” medium to language, and the same analogy holds with manga. The celebrated “God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka commented on his process by stating, “I don’t consider them pictures… in reality I’m not drawing, I’m writing a story with a unique type of symbol” (Schodt 1983:25). One of the first Americans to write about manga, Frederik Schodt, reiterated this, commenting that “manga are merely another ‘language,’ and the panels and pages are but another type of ‘words’ adhering to a unique grammar” (1996:26).

  • A Study of Ukiyo-E's Place in the Development
PROGENITOR OR MERE PREDECESSOR: A STUDY OF UKIYO-E’S PLACE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN MANGA THROUGH THE WORKS OF RUMIKO TAKAHASHI A THESIS IN Art History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by Julia Fields Jackson B.A., Pomona College, 2006 Kansas City, Missouri 2014 © 2014 JULIA FIELDS JACKSON ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PROGENITOR OR MERE PREDECESSOR: A STUDY OF UKIYO-E’S PLACE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN MANGA THROUGH THE WORKS OF RUMIKO TAKAHASHI Julia Fields Jackson, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2014 ABSTRACT In their effors to understand the history of manga , or Japanese comics, scholars have struggled determining the timeline of this art form. While some historians begin their narrative as far back as the twelfth century with examples of art that might be classified as “pre-manga ,” some academics choose to cite the start point manga ’s timeline in the nineteenth century with the first usage of the term “ manga .” Others researchers are even more conservative, beginning their scope of manga ’s history with the techniques developed during the mid-twentieth century which yield artwork recognizable to today’s aesthetics. The study of manga is still in an embryonic state, and the scope of this genre of art is vast; these two factors create a challenge in establishing a timeline for manga ’s history. Although it would be convenient to consider the history of Japanese illustrative art as a timeline that leads directly to modern manga , the myriad of genres and styles complicate the researcher’s ability to make claims about the pertinence of any specific point on that timeline to the development of manga as it is known today.
