Canadian Arctic 1987 TED WHALLEY Ellesmere Island has, at Cape Columbia, the northern-most land in the world, at latitude about 83.1°. It is a very mountainous island, particularly on the north west and the east sides, and its mountains almost reach the north coast - the northern-most mountains in the world. It was from here that most of the attempts to reach the North Pole have started, including that of Peary - reputedly, but perhaps not actually, the first man to reach the Pole. Nowadays, tourist flights to the Pole by Twin Otter from Resolute Bay are common, but are somewhat expensive. The topography of Ellesmere is dominated by several large and small ice-caps which almost bury the mountains, and only the Agassiz Ice-Cap, which is immediately west of Kane Basin, has a name. On the north-west side there are two large and unnamed ice-caps, the larger of which straddles 82°N and the smaller straddles 8I.5°N. There is also a large unnamed ice-cap immediately west of Smith Sound, a smaller one on the south-east tip of Ellesmere Island, and another north of the settlement of Grise Fiord on the south coast. The north coast of Ellesmere was the home of great ice shelves, but, at about the turn of the century, the ice shelves started to break off and float away as so-called 'ice islands' that circulated for many decades around the arctic ocean, and still do. They have often been used as natural platforms for scientific expeditions. Perhaps nine-tenths of the original ice shelves have floated away. -

NOVA DANIA THE QUEST FOR THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE SUZANNE CARLSON With considerable envy, the seventeenth century King of Denmark, Christian IV, watched the scramble to discover the elusive passage over Polar regions to lay claim to the riches of Cathay. This article will follow the fate of Christian’s early seventeenth century New World foothold, Nova Dania, through the cartographic record, speculating on what and when the Danes might have known about the then frozen northwest passage. An essential piece in this story is the amazing tale of Jens Munk, a merchant adventurer in the King’s service. For the cyber traveler, opportunities have reached a new zenith with Google Earth (FIGURE 1). I find myself cruising at 35,000 feet over the Alps, the Arabian Desert, up the Dania Nova Amazon, and to one of my favorite armchair destinations, FIGURE 2. Cherie, of the Russian Company. Scoresby visited it in 1822. It was surveyed in 1898 by A. G. Nathorst’s Swedish Arctic expedition. N 1596. — On June 17, W. Barentz and the Dutch, expedition in search of a N.-E. passage, sights West Spitzbergen. He called Groeten Inwick what is now Ice fjord (Hudson’s Great indraught in 1607) a name which was given to it by Poole in 1610. Barentz thought that Spitzbergen was part of Greenland. Barentz also discovered Prince Charles Foreland which he took to be an island and which was called Black point Isle by Poole in 1610. It was in 1612 that English Whalers named it after Prince Charles, son of James VI of Scotland, who became Charles I later. In 1607-1610, following the reports made by Hudson, of the Muscovy Company, a whaling industry was established in Spitzbergen. The scientific exploration of Spitz bergen has been going on ever since 1773, which was the year of Captain Phipps’s British expedition in which Horatio Nelson, took part. Explored by Sir Martin 丨Cònway.in 1896. By the Prince of Monaco and Doctor W. S. Bruce in 1906. By the Scottish Spitzbergen Syndicate of Edinburgh in 1920 and by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. 1598. ~• The Dutch admiral Jacob Cornel is van Necq, commanding the “ Mauritius” takes possession of Mauritius and pursues his voyage of Dutch colonisation to the Moluccas (Amboina) then to Te mate in 1601 with the “ Amsterdam ” and “ Utrecht ”,whilst the Hispano-Portuguese had settled at Tidor. -

The Strait of Anian and British Northwest America: Cook's Third Voyage in Perspective* JOHNNORRIS For local patriots of British Columbia, Captain Cook's third voyage is unsatisfactory. His stay at Nootka was so brief, his exploration of the coast so perfunctory, and his preoccupation with Alaska so much to be deplored. We are driven, in asking the reasons for these solecisms, to examine his instructions from the Admiralty for the third voyage. Alas, they hardly mention the coast of Northwest America between 45 ° and 65 ° North. Did their Lordships of the Admiralty slip up? Was Cook, that supreme professional who had had a hand in drawing up his own instructions, at less than his expert best? Did Palinurus nod at the helm? Cook's landing at Nootka was the result of his instructions "to put into the first convenient Port to recruit your Wood and Water and procure Refreshments . .Jîl But the prolongation of his stay to four weeks (29 March to 26 April 1778) was traceable to the bad fitting-out of his ships by the Navy Board, which resulted in the rotten foretop and mizzen masts of the Resolution having to be replaced after the strain of the spring gales of the North Pacific. Further, the avoidance of virtually all the rest of the British Columbia coast was in accordance with those instructions, since Cook was ordered to: ... proceed Northward along the Coast as far as the Latitude of 65 °, or farther, if you are not obstructed by Lands or Ice; taking care not to lose any time in exploring Rivers or Inlets, or upon any other account, until you get into the before-mentioned latitude of 65 °... -
