  • Bollywood Lens Syllabus
Bollywood's Lens on Indian Society Professor Anita Weiss INTL 448/548, Spring 2018 [email protected] Mondays, 4-7:20 pm 307 PLC; 541 346-3245 Course Syllabus Film has the ability to project powerful images of a society in ways conventional academic mediums cannot. This is particularly true in learning about India, which is home to the largest film industries in the world. This course explores images of Indian society that emerge through the medium of film. Our attention will be focused on the ways in which Indian society and history is depicted in film, critical social issues being explored through film; the depicted reality vs. the historical reality; and the powerful role of the Indian film industry in affecting social orientations and values. Course Objectives: 1. To gain an awareness of the historical background of the subcontinent and of contemporary Indian society; 2. To understand the sociocultural similarities yet significant diversity within this culture area; 3. To learn about the political and economic realities and challenges facing contemporary India and the rapid social changes the country is experiencing; 4. To learn about the Indian film industry, the largest in the world, and specifically Bollywood. Class format Professor Weiss will open each class with a short lecture on the issues which are raised in the film to be screened for that day. We will then view the selected film, followed by a short break, and then extensive in- class discussion. Given the length of most Bollywood films, we will need to fast-forward through much of the song/dance and/or fighting sequences.

Rogers Myron Weiner a ........ .................. ..... .......... C/77-5 INTERNAL MIGRATION POLICIES IN AN INDIAN STATE: A CASE STUDY OF THE MULKI RULES IN HYDERABAD AND ANDHRA K.V. Narayana Rao Migration and Development Study Group Center for International Studies Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 August 1977 Preface by Myron Weiner This study by Dr. K.V. Narayana Rao, a political scientist and Deputy Director of the National Institute of Community Development in Hyderabad who has specialized in the study of Andhra Pradesh politics, examines one of the earliest and most enduring attempts by a state government in India to influence the patterns of internal migration. The policy of intervention began in 1868 when the traditional ruler of Hyderabad State initiated steps to ensure that local people (or as they are called in Urdu, mulkis) would be given preferences in employment in the administrative services, a policy that continues, in a more complex form, to the present day. A high rate of population growth for the past two decades, a rapid expansion in education, and a low rate of industrial growth have combined to create a major problem of scarce employment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh as in most of India and, indeed, in many countries in the third world. It is not surprising therefore that there should be political pressures for controlling the labor market by those social classes in the urban areas that are best equipped to exercise political power.

[LISTED] THE UNDERDOG TURNED SUPERSTAR ANURAG KASHYAP, GUNEET MONGA, NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI, RICHA CHADDA, VIKRAMADITYA MOTWANE Text Shahnaz Siganporia Photography Ishika Mohan Motwane N THE INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY, there are good and bad words. ‘Un- derdog’, ‘struggler’, ‘starlet’ are clubbed into the ‘bad’ category while I words such as ‘Superstar’, ‘100 Crore Club’, ‘legacy’ fall into the ‘good’ category. However, sometimes the two combine to form a heady cocktail. The starlet bags a 100 crore film and the underdog becomes the superstar. The latter is a tricky balance—there’s the formulaic superstar and then there’s the superstar who paves his or her own way and creates cinema that goes way beyond the norm. Over the last few years, the tides have been busy changing, contorting and transforming our home-grown film industry. And let’s face it, in an industry raking in the moolah, thanks to wish-fulfilment and feel- good stories, we’re suckers for the runt who becomes the alpha. In the 100th year of Indian cinema, Platform celebrates the erstwhile underdogs who have gone on to carve out a space for themselves and have begun their ascent to stardom. NOV/DEC 2013 · PLATFORM · CREATIVE LIFESTYLE · 031 [LISTED] Anurag Kashyap FROM BANNED TO LAUDED THE BEGINNING I don’t know why I wanted to make films. It’s like asking yourself why you love someone. How do you explain that? You just do, you know? I just knew that filmmaking is what I wanted to do. I was studying to be a scientist and something just snapped—I knew that I should have- been making films.
