Toelichting Muziek wint aan zeggingskracht wanneer je het verhaal achter het lied kent. Dat weet Leo Blokhuis ook. Al snel blijkt dat het er in het Amerika van de jaren zestig lang niet alles zo zwart-wit was als de geschiedenisboeken ons leren. Tekenend is een anekdote over de zwarte Solomon Burke die ooit voor de Ku Klux Klan optrad, omdat ze zo dol waren op zijn countrynummers. Ze hadden hem alleen gehoord en daarom moest Burke de show noodgedwongen onherkenbaar met een verband over zijn hoofd zingen. De bijna honderd nummers op dit pakket zijn ook stuk voor stuk onweerstaanbaar en met het reisverslag van Blokhuis erbij wordt het nog beter. Compilatie van het jaar! PdK meer. Sounds of the South : a musical journey from the Georgia sea islands to the Mississippi delta Volgens het beproefde recept gaat Blokhuis in op countrysoul, een tamelijk obscure muziekstroming. Terecht, want het is pure countrysoul, een sudderend stoofpotje waar de dampen het deksel boven de pan laten zweven. Het nummer is elk jaar te horen in de Top Op vorig jaar, veel te laag trouwens. Het huwelijk tussen blanke country en zwarte soul kan op zijn minst opmerkelijk worden genoemd. Temeer daar juist in het zuiden van Amerika deze stroming ontstond. Daar waar de littekens van de segregatie begin jaren zestig nog vers waren. Het weerhield soulzanger Solomon Burke er niet van countrynummers op te nemen. Klein schoonheidsfoutje. Het is Blokhuis vergeven, want dat het nummer helemaal niet in het zuiden van de VS werd opgenomen maar in New York en dat het toch thuishoort op The Sound Of The South legt hij duidelijk uit. Maar goed, hoe zat dat met het racisme en die samenwerking? De artiesten hadden blijkbaar geen last van onderbuikgevoelens. Ze begrepen maar al te goed dat het in country en soul om precies hetzelfde gaat. Menselijke emoties waarbij het niet uitmaakt wat voor huidskleur je hebt. De liefde om precies te zijn. En dan vooral de smart en het smachten. In het boek reist Blokhuis door het zuiden van Amerika. Met zijn vlotte schrijfstijl maakt hij inzichtelijk hoe die samenwerking verliep. Blokhuis doet zich in zijn boeken nooit voor als de alleswetende popprofessor. Hij verklaart eerlijk dat hij zich pas sinds in het genre verdiept heeft, daartoe aangezet door de dat jaar verschenen cd Do Right Man van Dan Penn. En Blokhuis heeft er ook geen moeite mee te vertellen dat een nog zeer jonge Tim Knol, destijds een enthousiaste verkoper in een platenzaak, hem heeft gewezen op de muziek van de tragische zanger Jimmy Donley uit Louisiana. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld nauwelijks overlap met het uitstekende compilatiealbum The Fame Studios Story , ondanks uitgebreide aandacht voor Muscle Shoals. Toch vervagen in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten de grenzen tussen beide genres. Al in de vroege jaren zestig begeleiden multiraciale bands de artiesten van het Staxlabel in Memphis en begeleiden ex-countrymuzikanten de grote soulsterren in de Fame-studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. De fusie tussen beide stijlen wordt vaak country-soul genoemd en in zijn tweede Soundbook inventariseert Leo Blokhuis zowel de beste blank beïnvloede soul, als de soulvolle country.     Soul – the sub-genres: • The Motown Sound • The Stax/Volt Sound • Atlantic Soul • Philadelphia Soul • 80s Soul/Urban ORIGINS Soul music eventually materialized in the early 1960s. It developed out of the Black music that became popular in the 1950's; that is, American gospel and R&B, performed primarily by black musicians almost exclusively to a black audience. Some of the most successful R&B artists of the 50s were the ones who made it into the pop charts in the 1960s with ‘Soul’ numbers. One such person was Ray Charles who was a major force in the early development of soul music with his unique style, which was of a rich blend of gospel, rhythm and blues and Jazz. musical characteristics Soul music, especially that from the 1960s, was simply ‘pop-orientated’ R&B. Therefore, Soul and R&B performances share common instrumentation, with the performing ensemble divided into a rhythm section and a horn section. Typically, the rhythm section consists of a drum kit, bass (electric or acoustic), piano (sometimes organ instead of or in addition to piano), and guitar, while the horn section features saxophones, trumpets, and occasionally trombones (though confusingly almost never, despite its name, horns). The emphasis on the horn section in most styles of soul and R&B has been one of the ways in which the music has historically been differentiated from white rock music, which has tended to be guitar dominated. Other common musical elements of Soul and R&B music include the use of: (1) the twelve--bar form, using a three line lyric, originating in earlier styles of blues; (2) call and response, whereby a singer or instrumentalist will sing or play a phrase and another vocalist or instrumentalist will answer with another phrase; (3) incessant repetition of musical notes, rhythms, phrases, or verses; the use of blue notes and (5) a tightly integrated and complex blending of instruments, in which it is often difficult to differentiate the separate sounds or instruments being played at a given moment.

Can anyone here give any explanation for why the album failed? I don't believe her previous album 'Dusty Definitely' sold that well either. Had Dusty simply bec ome irrelevant for some reason? Maybe bec ause record buyers didn't understand what she was doing? Maybe young Americans didn't know who she was (the title assumes they did)? Maybe because she broke her mould and left many of her UK fans wondering what was going on, that she'd abandoned them somehow?
