SLEPIAN (2) WIN EVENTS!! 18 Scarlet-Elite swimmers competed at the 2014 Eastern Zone Long Course Age Group Championships (commonly referred to as “Zones”) this past weekend in Richmond, Virginia. The Eastern Zone consists of the following LSC’s: Maine Swimming, New England Swimming, Connecticut Swimming, Metro Swimming, New Jersey Swimming, Mid-Atltantic Swimming, Maryland Swimming, Niagara Swimming, Adirondack Swimming, Allegheny Mountain Swimming, Potomac Valley Swimming & Virginia Swimming. On the last day of competition, 12 year old Danning Hu won the girls 11-12 200 IM in 2.23.96. In doing so, Danning broke New Jersey Swimming’s girls 11-12 200 IM record by 2.50 seconds. The previous record was held by Felicia Lee of Montclair YMCA, whom established the record of 2:26.46 on January 14, 2005. Lee went on to swim for North Baltimore Swim Club (home of Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff) and Stanford University. At JO’s, Danning missed the record by just .03 in winning the event in 2.26.49. In her other events, Danning placed 2nd in the 200 back by dropping 1.24 from her previous best to touch in 2:25.98. Danning’s 1.08.76 effort in the 100 back was good enough for 3rd place. FITTER AND FASTER SWIM TOUR EXPANDS TO 2 DAY, 3 OLYMPIANS (FEIGEN, JOYCE & FOLKER!) FORMAT; CLINIC BOTH SEPT 20 & 21; FOCUS OF THIS YEAR’S CAMP ON ELITE SWIMMERS! The annual Fitter and Faster Swim Tour that arrives each September has both expanded its format (2 day format) and narrowed its focus (on elite swimmers) this year. The two day swim camp that is now being offered on September 20 and 21 at Drew University in Madison is called the Elite Speed and Power Swim Camp. To ensure the curriculum is at the highest level - there are qualifying times of 54.99 for boys and 58.99 for girls in the 100 yard freestyle. This year’s swim camp is only open to 60 participants – making it one of the highest level camps in the country! Swimmers of all ages and from different parts of the country have already signed up to be part of this one of a kind learning experience. A few are even flying in - one participant is coming from New Mexico. Leading the Elite Speed and Power Camp are two of FFT’s top clinicians and greatest American sprinters of all time, Jimmy Feigen (2012 Olympian, 47.82 100 meter free) and Kara Lynn Joyce (Three-time Olympian and 27-time NCAA Champion) and Scarlet-Elite swimmers will remember Jimmy Feigen as the fabulous Olympian, along with Kim Vandenberg, gave a clinic last November especially for Scarlet-Elite swimmers (sponsored by ESCPO). Feigen & Joyce will work with swimmers on improving all of the “power” components of the race: Starts, Turns, Breakouts, Maintaining Speed and Maximizing Power during a race. Strength and Dryland “guru” Nick Folker, the current CEO of of FASST and former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of California Berkeley, will work with participants on how to utilize their core strength, body weight and athleticism to access their true “power” in the water. For more information about the Elite Speed and Power Camp and how to register, http://fitterandfaster.com/swim-clinics/elite-speed-and-power-swim-camp-eastern-region/ Drew University Head Coach Eric Scheingoltz coordinates and sponsors this terrific opportunity for the area youngsters each year. TOM LAWSON TO JOIN SCARLET-ELITE COACHING STAFF THIS FALL: Tom Lawson, who was an accomplished swimmer as a youngster, a college swimmer and as a master swimmer, will be joining the Scarlet-Elite coaching staff this fall for the Winter 2014-15 session. As a local New Jersey swimmer, Tom was among the best in the area in the IM. Tom continued his swimming at Lafayette College (teammate of Coach Bill’s) and was captain his senior year, along with being a team record holder. Tom also competed locally in Masters Swimming for many years and as a parent, had several children whom competed locally and in college. Tom will begin his tenure at Scarlet-Elite by working with the Marlins and Pre- Elite 3 days a week. RISING SENIORS: AUGUST IS OFFICIAL COLLEGE ESSAY(S) MONTH!! Rising Seniors, August is official College Essay(s) Month. With 1st semester Senior year being the most strenuous and stressful semester in a person’s high school career, the smart Senior uses August to complete their college essay. Faced with a continued strong academic workload along with college application preparation, possible college recruiting trips (or just visiting or revisiting schools) and possible SAT or ACT test review/tutoring, a swimmer who also wants to keep up on their training (no college coach wants to hear other priorities got in the way of training) needs to use the “down” month of August to get the college essay(s) (and possibly the common college application form) completed so that it is one (rather large) thing to cross off the to-do list. FALL/WINTER 2014-15 PRACTICE SCHEDULE: UNDER CONSTRUCTION! The Fall/Winter 2014-15 practice schedule is now under construction. This practice schedule will be continuously updated as black out dates, meets and high school meet conflicts are learned.

Back in the late 80’s/ early 90’s, big surprise here, Bob Steele had the idea of starting a motivational Top Times listing that was scored because it didn’t exist. Now it does through USA swimming. July BETWEEN THE LINES 2008 Fishers Greenfield SOUTHEASTERN SWIM CLUB OF Pendleton Mission "Our program encourages swimmers to reach their full potential and Statement develop essential life skills while having fun!" Important Dates President’s Perspective by: Dan Johnson July How fast does the summer go--we are already in July, our meet is right around the corner, and the 11-13 SSC Summer Sizzler Championship Meets are at the end of this month. In August, all of the country will be watching the 21 SSC Night at Victory Olympic Games where swimming is always one of the areas in which the USA dominates. With this Field in mind I started thinking about how great our sport is and why. I found an article on the “Top 10 Reasons Why Our Children Should Swim”: 25 Final Splash of Sea- son—Tri-Dual @ Craw- fordsville HS 1. Swimming is an outstanding activity for young people. 2. Swimming promotes fitness and teaches a child to strive for physical achievement.
