The general concept of themethodology is shown in Figure 1. The methodology uses four basic variancecriteria that were agreed to by a Federal Advisory Committee but expands upon those to provide a greater range of variance options. Elements of this study included, + defining thegeology and hydrogeology of the San Juan Basin with respect to petroleum production and groundwater occurrence + documenting thebasin exploration and development history + documentation andanalysis of historical state regulations pertaining to well construction and abandonment + constructing pressureand hydraulic headsurfaces for petroleum reservoirs and head surfacesfor underground sources of drinking water (USDWs), and preparing theresulting residual head maps for each combination of petroleum reservoirs and USDWs + accumulation of available well datafor a selectedsample of producing and abandonedwells and preparationof wellbore diagrams + application theof well evaluationprocedures to theselected population of wells and analysis of the results + evaluationofAOR variance opportunities within the San Juan Basin USDWs were identified in six hydrostratigraphicsystems, including Tertiary, Upper Cretaceous, Mesaverde, Gallup, Dakota, and Morrison. Petroleum reservoirs were grouped in a similar manner, with an additional classification for petroleum reservoirs below the Morrison. USDWs are absent at manySanJuan Basin fields. Oil and gas development began in the San Juan Basin prior to 1900. The oldest field currently undergoing waterflooding is the Rattlesnake field, which was discovered in 1924. The mostrecent field is the Miguel Creek field which was discovered in 1978. A correlation has been found to exist betweenfield age and the quality of well construction and abandonment practiceas 1 it is documented by available information. Wells constructed or abandoned in fields discovered since 1949 have been found to provide USDW protection. I Regulation of oil and gas production activity began in 1912. The New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission (NMOCC) was established in 1935. The first modern statewide rules were instituted in 1950. The current New Mexico Oil Conservation Division evolved from the NMOCC in 1975. Major revision of the rules occurredin 1981 in response to the EPA regulations developed under the Safe Drinking Water Act. It is believed that the rules establishedin 1950 have been effective in requiring that wellbore features are present to protect USDWs in wells constructed or abandoned since that time: Residual hydraulic head maps were prepared for eachof the petroleum reservoirs with respect to overlying USDWs. These maps are based on initial pressure surfaces and were constructed with drillstem test (bottomhole) pressures.

Uppermost Nelson Mountain Tuff consists of nonwelded to weakly welded, crystal-poor rhyolite, which grades upward to a densely welded caprock of crystal-rich dacite (~68% SiO2). The area includes varied geological elements including the broad Jornada del Muerto Basin in the west, and the Oscura Mountains and Chupadera Mesa in the medial area. The Laramide-age Sierra Blanca Basin and several isolated mountain ranges formed principally by Tertiary-age igneous intrusive bodies occupy the eastern third of the region. The Chupadera Mesa area has been sparsely drilled. A total of 45 wells have been drilled within the project area. This is a density of approximately one well for every 85 mi2. Many of the wells are shallow and reached total depth in Permian strata. Only 20 wells have been drilled to Precambrian basement. This is a density of one well per 200 mi2, or 6.4 townships. Neither oil, natural gas nor helium production have been established. Nevertheless, several of the wells have encountered promising shows of oil, natural gas, and helium.

This article tabulates butterflies taken in the Chuska and Zuni Mts. of northwest New Mexico and extreme northeast Arizona. Emphasis is on the author's own experience during the period 1971-1978. This paper is the third in a series which eventually will treat the butterfly fauna of all the major mountain ranges in New Mexico, except those which are unbroken extensions of the Colorado Rockies. The first, published by Holland (1974) dealt with six ranges in the central part of the state. The second, published by Ferris (1976) reported on the Grant-Catron County area, including the extensive Gila Mts. The pres­ ent work is devoted to the Zuni and Chuska Mts. of northwestern New Mexico (see Figs. 1-3). Surveys of the butterflies of the Sacramento, Capitan, and Organ Mts. in southcentral New Mexico have also been completed, but publication of this work is being delayed until the Guadalupe Ridge has been investigated as well, Additionally, a survey of the Jemez Mts. in northcentral New Mexico is now completed and will be published soon. Besides the Guadalupe Ridge, studies of several ranges outlying the Gila are planned. These ranges include the Black, Animas and Datil Mts. About four quite limited regional lists of the New Mexico fauna have also appeared; these lists are catalogued in the above-mentioned Holland and Ferris articles. Additionally, there is an unpublished dis­ sertation by Toliver (1978) which tabulates every butterfly specimen taken in New Mexico prior to 1978.
