© Lonely Planet Publications 93 Central Madagascar Driving the thousand odd kilometres between Antananarivo and Toliara on the famous Route Nationale 7 (RN7; Route du Sud) takes you straight through Central Madagascar, where the CENTRAL MADAGASCAR scenery is as stimulating and surreal as the culture. The RN7 might be Madagascar’s busiest highway (not to mention tourist trail), but to the barefoot Bara herdsmen, walking from as far as Toliara with nothing but a stick and the clothes on their back, it’s just a footpath useful for herding hundreds of zebu to market in Antananarivo. Some parts of Central Madagascar feel as far removed from the conventional vision of Africa as possible. Glassy, terraced rice paddies juxtaposed against cool, misty mountains and thick-walled red huts constructed from crimson soil, make you think you’ve been transported to Southeast Asia. Meanwhile the expanses of green rolling hills and golden fields dotted with medieval villages and tidy rows of grapes look European. Hit a city, however, and you slam back into chaotic Africa. Brightly painted pousses-pousses (rickshaws), their drivers hus- tling hard for fares, compete with zebu carts and overpacked buses for space along rutted streets where touts hawk everything from price-guns to strawberries. To really experience Central Madagascar’s chameleonlike ability to change, you’ll have to get out of your car. There is fantastic trekking through cloud forests and volcanic craters in the region’s stunning national parks, home to vegetation and animals (lots of lemurs) found nowhere else on earth. For a more cultural experience, spend three days trekking through Betsileo villages. -

In this paper, we aim to establish correlations among these Archean domains using whole–rock geochemistry and U–Pb zircon geochronology of meta–granitoids from the Masora and the Anta- nanarivo domains, central–eastern Madagascar. A meta–granitoid from the central part of Masora domain is dated at 3277 Ma and shows a typical Archean tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite composition, whereas a tonalitic gneiss from the southeastern part of the Antananarivo domain gives an age of 2744 Ma. The geo- chemical signature of this tonalitic gneiss differs from that of the ~ 2500 Ma granitoids of the northwestern part of Antananarivo domain. In addition, the geochemical composition of the ~ 760 Ma granitic gneisses is con- sistent with a volcanic–arc origin for the protolith. Based on the geochemical and geochronological results, along with existing data, we identified three episodes of granitic magmatism in central–eastern Madagascar at ~ 3300, 2700, and 2500 Ma. -

The WAVES global partnership (www.wavespartnership.org) brings together a broad coalition of governments, UN agencies, nongovernment organizations and academics for this purpose. WAVES core implementing countries include developing countries—Botswana, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Madagascar, the Philippines and Rwanda—all working to establish natural capital accounts. WAVES also partners with UN agencies—UNEP, UNDP, and the UN Statistical Commission—that are helping to implement natural capital accounting. What followed was a love affair with an animal and a Long-Term Surveys, Mouse Lemurs, Digital Amphibian Database, country that continues to this day. Dr. Wright is best known for her Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) study of lemurs in Ranomafana National Park (“RNP”), which she helped establish in 1991.
