A taxonomic revision of Melanoxerus (Rubiaceae), with descriptions of three new species of trees from Madagascar Kent Kainulainen Abstract KAINULAINEN, K. (2021). A taxonomic revision of Melanoxerus (Rubiaceae), with descriptions of three new species of trees from Madagascar. Candollea 76: 105 – 116. In English, English and French abstracts. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2021v761a11 This paper provides a taxonomic revision of Melanoxerus Kainul. & Bremer (Rubiaceae) – a genus of deciduous trees with eye-catching flowers and fruits that is endemic to Madagascar. Descriptions of three new species, Melanoxerus antsirananensis Kainul., Melanoxerus atropurpureus Kainul., and Melanoxerus maritimus Kainul. are presented along with distribution maps and a species identification key. The species distributions generally reflect the ecoregions of Madagascar, with Melanoxerus antsirananensis being found in the dry deciduous forests of the north; Melanoxerus atropurpureus in the inland dry deciduous forests of the west; Melanoxerus maritimus in dry deciduous forest on coastal sands; and Melanoxerus suavissimus (Homolle ex Cavaco) Kainul. & B. Bremer in the dry spiny thicket and succulent woodlands of the southwest. Résumé KAINULAINEN, K. (2021). Community forest management on the agricultural frontier : charcoal makers, immigrant associations and land claims in Ankarafantsika, North-West Madagascar Frank MUTTENZER1 Livelihoods of rural immigrants in the lower Betsiboka region, North‑West Madagascar, consist of subsistence cultivation of dry crops on new or ancient forest burns and flooded rice in the lower lying areas, combined with charcoal making for nearby urban markets. Charcoal is produced in a framework of loosely connected village associations. Such associations were first set up by local people themselves consisting of first or second‑generation immigrants from elsewhere in Madagascar, to regulate issues of common interest such as charcoal burning and securing cultivation rights on formerly forested lands2.

  • A Decade of Plague in Madagascar
Rakotosamimanana et al. BMC Public Health (2021) 21:1112 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-021-11061-8 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access A decade of plague in Madagascar: a description of two hotspot districts Sitraka Rakotosamimanana1,2,3* , Daouda Kassie1,4,5, François Taglioni3, Josélyne Ramamonjisoa2, Fanjasoa Rakotomanana1 and Minoarisoa Rajerison1 Abstract Background: Human plague cases, mainly in the bubonic form, occur annually in endemic regions of the central highlands of Madagascar. The aim of this study was to compare the dynamics of the epidemiological features of the human plague in two districts of the central highlands region. Methods: In Madagascar, all clinically suspected plague cases that meet clinical and epidemiological criteria specified in the World Health Organization (WHO) standard case definition are reported to the national surveillance system. Data on plague cases reported between 2006 and 2015 in the districts of Ambositra and Tsiroanomandidy were analysed. Statistical comparisons between the epidemiological characteristics of the two districts were conducted. Results: A total of 840 cases of plague were reported over the studied period, including 563 (67%) probable and confirmed cases (P + C). Out of these P + C cases, nearly 86% (488/563) were cases of bubonic plague. Reported clinical forms of plague were significantly different between the districts from 2006 to 2015 (p = 0.001). Plague cases occurred annually in a period of 10 years in the Tsiroanomandidy district. During the same period, the Ambositra district was characterized by a one-year absence of cases. Conclusion: The differences in the epidemiological situation with respect to the plague from 2006 to 2015 in the two central highlands districts may suggest that several factors other than biogeographical factors determine the representation of the plague and its dynamics in this region.

  • Extensive Survey of the Endangered Coquerel's Sifaka Propithecus

Despite its Endangered (EN) IUCN conservation status, uncertainties persist regarding its actual distribution and its presence in forests that are thought to be part of its distribution range. We provide here the first extensive population surveys of Coquerel’s sifaka across a large number of forest fragments neighboring 27 sites of its known and expected distribution range in north- western Madagascar, including 12 previously visited sites. During our diurnal surveys carried out in the dry seasons from 2009 to 2011 we observed the species in 26 of the 27 visited sites. Combin- ing our results with previously published data, we propose a refined update of the species’ distri- bution range and identify areas to be surveyed. We also recorded the support tree species on which sifakas were observed, and note that, surprisingly, P. coquereli was frequently seen around villages and in areas dominated by introduced tree species.
