South East Brazil 18th – 27th January 2018 Grey-winged Cotinga (AF), Pico da Caledonia – rare, range-restricted, difficult to see, Bird of the Trip Introduction This report covers a short trip to South East Brazil staying at Itororó Eco-lodge managed & owned by Rainer Dungs. Andy Foster of Serra Dos Tucanos guided the small group. Itinerary Thursday 18th January • Nightmare of a travel day with the flight leaving Manchester 30 mins late and then only able to land in Amsterdam at the second attempt due to high winds. Quick sprint (stagger!) across Schiphol airport to get onto the Rio flight which then parked on the tarmac for 2 hours due to the winds. Another roller-coaster ride across a turbulent North Atlantic and we finally arrived in Rio De Janeiro two hours late. Eventually managed to get the free shuttle to the Linx Hotel adjacent to airport Friday 19th January • Collected from the Linx by our very punctual driver (this was to be a theme) and 2.5hour transfer to Itororo Lodge through surprisingly light traffic. Birded the White Trail in the afternoon. Saturday 20th January • All day in Duas Barras & Sumidouro area. Luggage arrived. Sunday 21st January • All day at REGUA (Reserva Ecologica de Guapiacu) – wetlands and surrounding lowland forest. Andy was ill so guided by the very capable REGUA guide Adelei. Short visit late pm to Waldanoor Trail for Frilled Coquette & then return to lodge Monday 22nd January • All day around lodge – Blue Trail (am) & White Trail (pm) Tuesday 23rd January • Early start (& finish) at Pico da Caledonia. -

SE Brazil December – January 2008/2009 Lasse Olsson – www.birding.se Although primarily a family trip to expectedly warm and sunny Brazil, I managed to spend quite some time behind my binoculars and my photo gear. Leaving Sweden in mist and with a temperature around zero we headed for Rio on 15th December. Our first goal was Serra dos Tucanos where we had reservations for three nights. After some delays we were met by the lodge’s driver at the airport and less than two hours later we occupied our rooms at SdT. With no thoughts of even a short rest I unpacked my photo-gear and got wild in the lodge garden. Later on Andy and Cristina – the owners – arrived and made us indeed feel welcome. Black Jacobin (Florisuga fuscus) – Serra dos Tucanos 2008-12-17 th th Serra dos Tucanos 15 – 19 December Wheather wasn’t at its best, as we during our stay had hardly anything but grey skies and drizzling rain. Nevertheless the lodge area is a marvellous place to spend some December days, with spectacular birds everywhere. I joined two excursions together with the guide Pete and Thomas, a German birder. The first day we were driven to Serra dos Orgãos, where we in the lower parts had some good birding the first hours, before heavy rainfall set in. Worth mentioning, among everything else, are Buff-bellied Puffbird (Notharchus swainsoni), Yellow-eared Woodpecker (Veniliornis maculifrons ), Black-capped Foliage-gleaner (Philydor atricapillus ), White-collared Foliage-gleaner (Anabazenops fuscus ), White-eyed Foliage-gleaner (Automolus leucophthalmus), White-throated -

Species highlighted in RED are the ones illustrated with photos in this report. INTRODUCTION Not everyone is fortunate enough to visit Peru; a marvelous country that boasts a huge country bird list, which is second only to Colombia. Unlike our usual set departure, we started out with a daylong extension to Lomas de Lachay first, before starting out on the usual itinerary for the main tour. The first site of the main tour was Huacarpay Lake, near the beautiful Andean city of Cusco (accessed after a short flight from Lima). This gave us a few endemic species like Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero; along with other less local species like Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Andean Negrito and Puna Ibis. The following day we birded along the road towards Manu where we picked up birds like Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Spot-winged Pigeon, and a beautiful Peruvian endemic in the form of Creamy-crested Spinetail. We also saw Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Black-faced Ibis, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied Mountain- Tanagers, Red-crested Cotinga and the gorgeous Grass-green Tanager. -

Tropical Birding Trip Report EASTERN ECUADOR October-November 2016 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour EASTERN ECUADOR: High Andes to Vast Amazon Main tour: 29th October – 12th November 2016 Tropical Birding Tour Leader: Jose Illanes This Wire-tailed Manakin was seen in the Amazon INTRODUCTION: This was always going to be a special for me to lead, as we visited the area where I was born and raised, the Amazon, and even visited the lodge there that is run by the community I am still part of today. However, this trip is far from only an Amazonian tour, as it started high in Andes (before making its way down there some days later), above the treeline at Antisana National Park, where we saw Ecuador’s national bird, the Andean Condor, in addition to Ecuadorian Hillstar, 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report EASTERN ECUADOR October-November 2016 Carunculated Caracara, Black-faced Ibis, Silvery Grebe, and Giant Hummingbird. Staying high up in the paramo grasslands that dominate above the treeline, we visited the Papallacta area, which led us to different high elevation species, like Giant Conebill, Tawny Antpitta, Many-striped Canastero, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Viridian Metaltail, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, and Andean Tit-Spinetail. Our lodging area, Guango, was also productive, with White-capped Dipper, Torrent Duck, Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager, Slaty Brushfinch, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, as well as hummingbirds like, Long-tailed Sylph, Tourmaline Sunangel, Glowing Puffleg, and the odd- looking Sword-billed Hummingbird. Having covered these high elevation, temperate sites, we then drove to another lodge (San Isidro) downslope in subtropical forest lower down. -

Although these birds are very conspicuous, there are few ecological studies focusing on them. In this study, the diets of four sympatric toucans (Rampbastos vitellinus, R. dicolorus, Selenidera maculirostris, and Baillonius baillonz) were assessed by recording feeding bouts at two altitudes in the Atlantic Forest of southeast Brazil. Our results show that toucans are predominantly frugivorous birds (96.5% of the 289 feeding bouts were on fruits). In the lowlands (70 m elev.), only fruits (48 species, 27 families) were recorded, while in the highlands (700 m elev.), toucans were observed feeding on fruits (25 species, 22 families), flowers, leaves, and insects. Non-fruit items were recorded only in the highlands, most of them eaten by B. bailloni. Cecropia glaziovii and Euterpe edulis, two abundant plants in the highland and lowland sites, respectively, and firola ole;fera, a plant that produces lipid-rich arillate fruits, were eaten heavily by the toucans. The number of feeding bouts recorded for R. vitellinus in the lowlands was positively correlated with lipid content of the fruits eaten. The diameters of fruits eaten by toucans varied greatly (range = 0.4-25.0 mm). -

Genetic diversity in rosewood saplings (Aniba rosaeodora ducke, Lauraceae): an ecological approach Ronaldo Pereira SANTOS1, Wilson Roberto SPIRONELLO2, Paulo de Tarso Barbosa SAMPAIO3 ABSTRACT This article takes an ecological approach to the genetic diversity of Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora Ducke) in a central Amazonian terra firme forest north of Manaus. Planted Rosewood setting, under partial shaded canopy, were assessed in terms of fruiting production, frugivory, and seed dispersal. Using RAPD molecular analysis procedures, the influence of the spatial distribution of adult trees on the genetic diversity (polymorphism) of saplings was assessed with genetic samples from 34 reproductive trees and 60 saplings. The density and distribution patterns the reproductive trees did not modify the sapling’s diversity (1.86%, AMOVA). Two types of adult tree dispersion were identified; i) clumped and ii) more widely dispersed. Polymorphism (77.5%) and gene flow were high between these. Although more sapling genetic variability in areas with a higher density of mature plants was not as high as expected, density did not affect the genetic diversity of samplings, indicating a high incidence of gene flow amongst trees. In planted Rosewood population (surrounded by low disturbed forest), fruiting trees experienced a high level of removal of seeds by toucans (Rhamphastidae), about of 50%. The high gene flow found among native trees suggested that toucans, promoting seed rain at short and long distances from maternal trees, actively contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity within wild rosewood populations. Junto con los registros previamente publicados y observaciones recientes realizadas por visitantes al área, el número de especies asciende a por lo menos 420. De éstas, 23 están clasificadas como amenazadas globalmente3, incluyendo Xenoglaux loweryi y Grallaricula ochraceifrons, ambas prácticamente desconocidas. Además, se registraron siete especies de distribución restringida. A pesar de que el ‘Bosque de Protección del Alto Mayo’ protege teóricamente 182 000 ha, la tala del bosque es una actividad frecuente y al parecer no existen medidas reales de control.
