It can then be transferred from system memory, across the I/O bus, onto hard drives (TB´s of data). The CPU/DMA-controller is responsible for managing this process. • Peer-to-peer data streaming is also possible between two PCI Express devices. PXI: Streaming to/from Hard Disk Drives RAM – Random Access Memory • SRAM – Static RAM: Each bit stored in a flip-flop • DRAM – Dynamic RAM: Each bit stored in a capacitor (transistor). Has to be refreshed (e.g. each 15 ms) – EDO DRAM – Extended Data Out DRAM. Data available while next bit is being set up – Dual-Ported DRAM (VRAM – Video RAM). Two locations can be accessed at the same time – SDRAM – Synchronous DRAM.

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or sometimes "Independent") Disks. RAID is a method of combining several hard disk drives into one logical unit (two or more disks grouped together to appear as a single device to the host system). RAID technology was developed to address the fault-tolerance and performance limitations of conventional disk storage. It can offer fault tolerance and higher throughput levels than a single hard drive or group of independent hard drives. While arrays were once considered complex and relatively specialized storage solutions, today they are easy to use and essential for a broad spectrum of client/server applications. Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) "KILLS - BUGS - DEAD!" -- TV commercial for RAID bug spray There are many applications, particularly in a business environment, where there are needs beyond what can be fulfilled by a single hard disk, regardless of its size, performance or quality level. Many businesses can't afford to have their systems go down for even an hour in the event of a disk failure; they need large storage subsystems with capacities in the terabytes; and they want to be able to insulate themselves from hardware failures to any extent possible. Some people working with multimedia files need fast data transfer exceeding what current drives can deliver, without spending a fortune on specialty drives. These situations require that the traditional "one hard disk per system" model be set aside and a new system employed.

Data expands to fill any void. –Parkinson’sLawasappliedto disks 4.1 Introduction This chapter deals primarily with how we store data. Virtually all computer systems require some way to store data permanently; even so-called “diskless” systems do require access to certain files in order to boot, run and be useful. Albeit stored remotely (or in memory), these bits reside on some sort of storage system. Most frequently, data is stored on local hard disks, but over the last few years more and more of our files have moved “into the cloud”, where di↵erent providers o↵er easy access to large amounts of storage over the network. We have more and more computers depending on access to remote systems, shifting our traditional view of what constitutes a storage device. 74 CHAPTER 4. OF FILE SYSTEMS AND STORAGE MODELS 75 As system administrators, we are responsible for all kinds of devices: we build systems running entirely without local storage just as we maintain the massive enterprise storage arrays that enable decentralized data replication and archival. Copyright © 1994 by Mark Calvin Holland ii Abstract There exists a wide variety of applications in which data availability must be continu- ous, that is, where the system is never taken off-line and any interruption in the accessibil- ity of stored data causes significant disruption in the service provided by the application. Examples include on-line transaction processing systems such as airline reservation sys- tems and automated teller networks in banking systems. In addition, there exist many applications for which a high degree of data availability is important, but continuous oper- ation is not required. An example is a research and development environment, where access to a centrally-stored CAD system is often necessary to make progress on a design project. These applications and many others mandate both high performance and high availability from their storage subsystems. Redundant disk arrays are systems in which a high level of I/O performance is obtained by grouping together a large number of small disks, rather than building one large, expensive drive. The high component count of such systems leads to unacceptably high rates of data loss due to component failure, and so they typically incorporate redun- dancy to achieve fault tolerance. This redundancy takes one of two forms: replication or encoding. In replication, the system maintains one or more duplicate copies of all data. In the encoding approach, the system maintains an error-correcting code (ECC) computed over the data.

    A PRIMER ON RAID LEVELS: STANDARD RAID LEVELS DEFINED RAID 0: Disk striping Description: Data is striped across one or more disks in the array. Performance: Since more writers and readers can access bits of data at the same time, performance can be improved. Upside: Performance. Downside: No redundancy. One disk failure will result in lost data. Application(s): Applications that can access data from more sources than just the RAID 0 storage array. RAID 1: Disk mirroring Description: Data is written to two or more disks. No master or primary, the disks are peers. Performance: Read operations are fast since both disks are operational data can be read from both disks at the same time. Write operations, however, are slower because every write operation is done twice. Upside: If one disk fails, the second keeps running with no interruption of data availability. Downside: Cost. Requires twice as much disk space for mirroring. Application(s): Applications that require high performance and high availability including transactional applications, email, and operating systems. RAID 3: Virtual disk blocks Description: Byte-level striping across multiple disks. An additional disk is added that calculates and stores parity information. Performance: Since every write touches multiple disks, every write slows performance. Upside: Data remains fully available if a disk fails. Downside: Performance. Application(s): Good for sequential processing applications such as video imaging. RAID 4: Dedicated parity disk Description: Block-level striping across multiple disks with a cache added to increase read and write performance. Performance: Striping blocks instead of bytes and adding a cache increases performance over RAID 3.

    Fault Tolerance & Reliability CDA 5140 Chapter 3 – RAID & Sample Commercial FT Systems - basic concept in these, as with codes, is redundancy to allow system to continue operation even if some components fail - hot standby refers to components that can fail, being associated with components that run in parallel (i.e. powered up) and can take over upon a failure - cold standby refers to having just one component powered up and others available but powered down (standby) that can be powered up upon detection of failure - once one standby takes over upon failure, either repair the failed unit or replace it, before the new operating component can fail - various techniques for improving system/component reliability: o improve manufacturing or design process to decrease component failure rate o parallel redundancy – sometimes synchronization, if multiple parallel components, can be difficult o cold standby can require complex switching o stage of repairing or replacing components is important RAID - increase of performance for processors & main memory has received considerable attention, unlike secondary storage - secondary storage is primarily a mechanical process & hence performance can only be pushed so far without using multiple parallel components - RAID, redundant arrays of independent disks, provides arrays of disks that can operate independently and in parallel, and is an industry standard so can be used on different platforms and operating systems - if data is on separate disks, then I/O requests can be done in parallel 1 - levels
