Please see page 117 for my remembrances of them. Introduction Benjamin Warden Childs was a descendant of Henry Childs, Sr. who was born in 1652 in Whielden, Amersham, England. Henry married Ann Ball in 1671 in Amersham, Hertford County, England. They had 10 children all born in England: Benjamin, Sarah, Mary, Ann, Henry Jr. (Ben's great-great-grandfather), Ruth, Rachel, Cephas, John and William. Sometime after his wife's death in 1696 in England, Henry immigrated to the United States with his 10 children and purchased land in Anne Arundel County, MD on October 5, 1702. As of this writing I have been unable to determine exactly when and where they landed in the US. It should be noted that Henry Childs, Sr. owned land in Plumstead, Bucks County, PA about 1681, but returned to England where he and his family lived until sometime between 1696 and 1702. On April 7, 1715, he conveyed his Pennsylvania land to his son Cephas who was living in Philadelphia at the time.

  • Hostmens Company Book
The Incorporated Company of Hostmen of the Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne Membership and Governors of the Company From 22nd March 1600 to 8th January 2018 AD 1 The Incorporated Company of Hostmen of the Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne Membership and Governors of the Company From 22nd March 1600 to 8th January 2018 AD 2 Foreword This record has been compiled by: Mr. T. R. Charlton. LCGI, DMS, Dip. Nebbs. and Miss Olivia Redpath, a Design and Research Student at Tyneside Metropolitan College. The record contains an extract of the charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1600 AD that created the Incorporated Company of Hostmen of Newcastle upon Tyne and thereby the rules for the good governance of the company. There follows the lists of members, apprentices and governors of the company covering 418 years and 1,304 members; i.e. from the original officers and members to the present day. Every effort has been made to check the accuracy of the records but there may be some errors due to changing spellings over time and the reading of old records that were not as legible as one would have hoped for. The records from between 1901 to 1912 AD are not available, this consists of 15 records numbered from 1070 to 1085. Finally, there is a copy of the updated rules of the company that were adopted in January 2017 when it was decided that the rules from 1600 AD had become inappropriate, especially the powers to fine or imprison members for minor infractions. The compilers of this record wish to acknowledge the use of records of several other bodies to confirm the accuracy of our research and that of the records held by the company.

By c.1150 two prebends were probably in existence. In the 1220s these were called 'Awelton arch[idiaconi], and 'Awelton', while both were called 'Awelton' without distinction in 1226. In 1284 the names were 'Awelton Sancti Pancratii' and 'Awelton', while in 1291 there was a distinction between 'Aulton in Southbury', later Australis, and 'Aulton in Northbury', later Borealis. From 1329, the holders of the prebends can certainly be distinguished and can be traced back to 1297 but for the purpose of the earlier succession in the prebends, 'Alton Pancras' is taken to be Alton Australis and 'Alton Archidiaconi' to be Borealis' (pp.64 and 87). 1 PR/AA/1 item Fragment of a Deed nd [late 13th- Fragment of a deed.
