Saint Louis Arts Ecology February 8, 2019 PRESENTATION AT THE REGIONAL ARTS COMMISSION ARTS &: NEXT STEPS CONVENING FEBRUARY 8, 2019 Summary The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland was commissioned by Centene Corporation to study the arts ecology of St. Louis. The goal of the study was to provide guidance to Centene about the needs of the artists and arts organizations in St. Louis. The study examined two cohorts of arts organizations, those larger organizations that receive RAC funding and smaller organizations that receive project support. In-depth interviews and data surveys were performed with 60 organizations from both cohorts. Data for arts organizations in St. Louis were also compared to data from arts organizations in six comparator cities. The interviews focused on key strategic aspects of arts management: artistic planning, marketing (both to increase ticket sales and to engage new donors), fund-raising, board engagement and staffing. 2 Major Conclusions Major conclusions of the study included: - St. Louis has a remarkably large, diverse and productive arts sector that includes a large number of organizations - The largest arts organizations are larger than their counterparts in similar size cities - St. Louis is missing a cadre of mid-sized organizations; most organizations are very large or of modest size - There is a great reliance on fundraising by the larger arts institutions 3 Major Conclusions (cont) - A small group of very generous funders is providing a large portion of philanthropy in St. -

Docent Training Questionnaire 19 2 Program Description Saint Louis Zoo Docent Program The Saint Louis Zoo enlists approximately 1,000 volunteers in a wide variety of capacities ranging from special events to education programs, animal husbandry to behavior observations, and gift shop operations to training. Volunteers are a vital part of the Zoo’s operation and contribute over $500,000 of services each year to accomplish the Zoo’s mission “To conserve animals and their habitats through outstanding educational and recreational experiences, research and animal management. Volunteers undergo an orientation and various levels of training.” In order to become a Docent, interested Zoo volunteers apply and are interviewed before being accepted into Docent Basic Training. Saint Louis Zoo Docents undergo the greatest level of training and help the Education Department achieve its mission “To nurture respect for animals and their habitats and promote conservation action by providing educational opportunities and experiences.” Saint Louis Zoo Docents conduct education programs and on-ground interpretations that meet the needs of the visitors and Zoo while achieving the program or interpretation objectives. Docents are also requested to provide interpretive and educational opportunities for events conducted by other Zoo divisions and departments. -

Garden Designers – Biographies Tom Stuart-Smith Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd is a landscape design practice with an international reputation for making gardens that combine naturalism and modernity. The practice was established in 1998. Work since has ranged from large gardens and parks open to the public, to smaller private gardens. Tom Stuart-Smith has also designed a number of gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show. Eight of these have been awarded gold medals, and three have won ‘Best in Show’. Most projects are located in the UK and Europe, with a few undertaken further afield. Despite the scale and complexity of our work we remain a small practice. Nine landscape architects and designers work under the direction of Tom Stuart-Smith, who is closely involved with each project. Guerrilla Spatial Tactics and Methods of Urban Hacking in Brisbane, Australia Christopher Cox, Mirko Guaralda Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia Creative Industries Faculty, School of Design [email protected] | [email protected] Abstract It could be argued that architecture has an inherent social responsibility to enrich the urban and spatial environments for the city’s occupants. However, how we define quality, and how ‘places’ can be designed to be fair and equitable, catering for individuals on a humanistic and psychological level, is often not clearly addressed. Lefebvre discusses the idea of the ‘right to the city’; the belief that public space design should facilitate freedom of expression and incite a sense of spatial ownership for its occupants in public/commercial precincts. Lefebvre also points out the importance of sensory experience in the urban environment. “Street-scape theatrics” are performative activities that summarise these two concepts, advocating the ‘right to the city’ by way of art as well as providing sensual engagement for city users. Literature discusses the importance of Street-scape Theatrics however few sources attempt to discuss this topic in terms of how to design these spaces/places to enhance the city on both a sensory and political level. This research, grounded in political theory, investigates the case of street music, in particular busking, in the city of Brisbane, Australia. Street culture is a notion that already exists in Brisbane, but it is heavily controlled especially in central locations. -

Beck EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 © Copyright by Lauren R. Beck 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 Abstract Ototheatre: Learning to Listen and Perform in Sonically Augmented Spaces Lauren R. Beck This dissertation explores a form of performance I call “ototheatre,” which is a mobile and participatory audience experience executed with portable sound technology. Ototheatre is an emergent artistic form that sits at a convergence of contemporary technologies and audience consumption habits. Case studies, including smartphone applications and new theatrical works incorporating novel uses of sound technology, reveal the antecedents and characteristics of this form of theatre. I explore the methods by which these works create intimate, interactive theatrical experiences that extend modes of audience experience. Podcasts are a new media practice that have multiple theatrical antecedents and ototheatrical potential. I analyze a particularly theatrical podcast, choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s Everyday Moments, to show new possibilities for individual modes of performance scripted by podcast artists for solo listening. I trace a genealogy that includes the théâtrophone, radio drama, and the downloadable podcast to demonstrate how the recorded voice has long been creating remote theatrical experiences for audiences through the use of mediatized sound technology. While radio has been called a “theatre of the mind,” I argue that podcasts can create an intimate, post-humanistic theatre of the body. I examine artistic sound works that are related to the audio tour to explore ways of mapping space with sound. -
