Western Michigan University, 2019 Sustainable transportation planning focuses on addressing the needs of current users, without jeopardizing the needs of future users (Black 1997, Richardson 1999, Balsas 2003). A popular mode of sustainable transportation is the bicycle, which is frequently used by college students. One aspect of bicycle transportation that remains underexplored within the United States and on university campuses, is bicycle parking. By using rack conditioning assessments, bicycle theft density analysis, bicycle parking counts and a formative stakeholder survey of the bicycle parking at Western Michigan University’s campus, recommendations were able to be created for campus officials for use in their planning efforts. This study established a relationship between bicycle rack type and condition grade, determined that bicycle theft most densely occurs in campus residential neighborhoods, and found that bicycle parking use decreases as the seasons change. Results from this study may also be useful for researchers who are researching bicycle parking at other universities, and in countries where cycling culture is still developing such as the United States. Bicycle Plan Goals • Connect important destinations with neighborhood and regional bike routes, bike lanes and other on-road facilities, and various multiple-use paths off of the roadway so that biking becomes a more viable transportation option. • Support and guide non-motorized conducive land-use decisions and policies such as mixed-use zoning, connectivity, and infill that encourages convenient bicycling for all skill levels. • Improve safety and accessibility for bicyclists with a special concern for all different types of riders especially children, low income residents, and the elderly. • Improve environmental conditions and health by reducing air, water and noise pollution resulting from unnecessary vehicular traffic and by increasing physical activity. • Encourage the addition of amenities in Mooresville that make biking pleasurable and practical such as landscaping, traffic calming, public restrooms and showers, lockers, bicycle racks, and recreational opportunities. • Create an atmosphere in Mooresville where motorists are familiar with bicyclists, bicyclists are comfortable with motorists, and where many obstacles that bicyclists currently face are corrected.

The current parking situation, the opinions and behaviors of cyclists, and potential parking solutions are analyzed through field studies at Nørreport Station, interviews and a survey. Recommendations for the best improvements are made so that the city of Copenhagen can continue to promote cycling as an alternative mode of transportation. i Executive Summary This project aids the Danish Cyclist Federation in promoting bicycle infrastructure in Copenhagen by conducting a study of bicycle parking at Nørreport Railway and Metro Station. Bicycle parking at major train and metro stations tends to be disorganized and haphazard due to factors such as the lack of space and shortage of racks. The trend in bicycle parking at Nørreport Station is to park as close as possible to the platform, bus stops, shopping areas, or kiosk, even if this means forgoing an actual parking space to toss the bicycle on the ground. The main problem lies in the overall bicycle parking system as well as the cyclists’ behavior in relation to it.

    CANADIAN INSTITUTE OF PLANNERS GO FOR GREEN COMMUNITY CYCLING MANUAL A PLANNING AND DESIGN GUIDE March 31, 1990 Up-dated June 2004 FORWFORWARD__________________________________ARD__________________________________ The original version of the Community Cycling Manual was developed with the assistance of funding from Fitness Canada, distributed through the Canadian Institute of Planners, and commissioned through the Canadian Task Force on Cycling. The objectives of the Canadian Task Force on Cycling were: • To establish the concept of the bicycle as a valid means of transportation; • To undertake activities to increase participation in cycling; • To enhance public awareness of cycling as both a recreational and utilitarian activity; and, • To provide a safe environment for cyclists across Canada. Various national and local agencies interested in cycling were represented on the Task Force. The manual formed part of an overall program designed to increase public awareness and to review public education as it relates to cycling. The original intention of the manual was to provide a much-needed body of research and guidelines on appropriate bicycle facilities planning. This manual was meant to be a document that could be up-dated as necessary. This current up-date reflects the changes that have occurred since the original version was published and was commissioned by GO FOR GREEN.
