Fenty & Ors v Arcadia & Anr Lord Justice Kitchin: Introduction 1. These proceedings concern a complaint by Rihanna, the world famous pop star, about the sale of fashion garments bearing her image. 2. The appellants (collectively “Topshop”) own and operate the well known Topshop retail fashion stores. In 2012 Topshop began to sell in its stores and through its website a fashion t-shirt displaying a clearly recognisable image of Rihanna. The image was derived from a photograph of Rihanna which was taken when she was on a video shoot for a single from her “Talk That Talk” album. Rihanna is looking directly at the camera with her hair tied above her head with a headscarf. It is, as the judge thought, a striking image and similar images had been used by Rihanna in connection with the Talk That Talk album. -

Fickle Justice: Judicial Idiosyncrasy in UK Privacy Cases
Fickle Justice: Judicial Idiosyncrasy in UK Privacy Cases PAUL WRAGGt I. INTRODUCTION In 1990, the Federal Court of Australia rejected counsel's submission that English authorities on the "public interest" defense in breach of confidence claims ought to be adopted. The court dismissively described those authorities as "not so much a rule of law as an invitation to judicial idiosyncrasy."' The same comment seems equally applicable today. As is well-established in British common law, when deciding claims for misuse of private information (which replaces breach of confidence),2 the court must decide whether the claimant's reasonable expectation of privacy is outweighed by the contribution to a debate of public interest that the publication makes.3 As the case law shows, this is usually a delicate balance that may involve fine distinctions. Yet despite judicial recognition that the "applicable principles [should] be stated with reasonable clarity ' 4 so as to avoid accusations of judicial idiosyncrasy, the approach taken to determining the question of "public interest" remains an invitation to such, especially where celebrities' private lives are involved. Recent developments suggest broad diversity in the methodology of evaluating the worth of privacy-invading expression in which both skeptical and generous approaches are evident. These idiosyncratic factors are the subject of discussion in this Article.5 By examining the recent case law, it will be argued that since the public interest test pervades a range of measures relating to the misuse of private information tort, the issue of judicial idiosyncrasy must be addressed by an appellate court. The adoption of the skeptical approach as tLecturer in Law, School of Law, University of Leeds, UK. -
The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire
Fleetwood_Fleetwood 8/15/2013 10:52 PM Page 419 Nicole R. Fleetwood The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire Note: This article was drafted prior to Rihanna and Chris Brown’s public reconciliation, though their rekindled romance supports many of the arguments outlined herein. Fig. 1: Cover of Esquire, November 2011 issue, U. S. Edition. Photograph by Russell James. he November 2011 issue of Esquire magazine declares Rihanna “the sexiest Twoman alive.” On the cover, Rihanna poses nude with one leg propped, blocking view of her breast and crotch. The entertainer stares out provocatively, with mouth slightly ajar. Seaweed clings to her glistening body. A small gun tattooed under her right arm directs attention to her partially revealed breast. Rihanna’s hands brace her body, and her nails dig into her skin. The feature article and accompanying photographs detail the hyperbolic hotness of the celebrity; Ross McCammon, the article’s author, acknowledges that the pop star’s presence renders him speechless and unable to keep his composure. Interwoven into anecdotes and narrative scenes explicating Rihanna’s desirability as a sexual subject are her statements of her sexual appetite and the pleasure that she finds in particular forms of sexual play that rehearse gendered power inequity and the titillation of pain. That Rihanna’s right arm is carefully positioned both to show the tattoo of the gun aimed at her breast, and that her fingers claw into her flesh, commingle sexual pleasure and pain, erotic desire and violence. Here and elsewhere, Rihanna employs her body as a stage for the exploration of modes of violence structured into hetero- sexual desire and practices. -

May 15, 2020 Created by (doja cat & lil uzi vert) (bruno mars & eminem) (taylor swift & rihanna) Dadaism On each of our pages, you will find a “guess the song” section. This was inspired by the Cut-Up technique, an aleatory literary technique where a written text is cut up word-by-word and then completely rearranged, resulting in a new text. This technique can be traced back to the Dadaists in the 1920s, a group of avant-garde artists located primarily in Europe. Since then, the Cut-Up technique has been used in a variety of other contexts. On our pages, we have taken a popular song from each artist, then used the Dadaist cut-up technique to scramble the lyrics and create a new text. We chose to do this to pay homage to and remind us of the avant-garde artists and the history of avant-garde zines. So, if you would like, take a shot at guessing the songs. The answers are found on the final page. We hope you enjoy our little game and, in the process, are reminded of how all zines began. MTO 23.2: Lafrance, Finding Love in Hopeless Places
Finding Love in Hopeless Places: Complex Relationality and Impossible Heterosexuality in Popular Music Videos by Pink and Rihanna Marc Lafrance and Lori Burns KEYWORDS: Pink, Rihanna, music video, popular music, cross-domain analysis, relationality, heterosexuality, liquid love ABSTRACT: This paper presents an interpretive approach to music video analysis that engages with critical scholarship in the areas of popular music studies, gender studies and cultural studies. Two key examples—Pink’s pop video “Try” and Rihanna’s electropop video “We Found Love”—allow us to examine representations of complex human relationality and the paradoxical challenges of heterosexuality in late modernity. We explore Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of “liquid love” in connection with the selected videos. A model for the analysis of lyrics, music, and images according to cross-domain parameters ( thematic, spatial & temporal, relational, and gestural ) facilitates the interpretation of the expressive content we consider. Our model has the potential to be applied to musical texts from the full range of musical genres and to shed light on a variety of social and cultural contexts at both the micro and macro levels. Received December 2016 Volume 23, Number 2, June 2017 Copyright © 2017 Society for Music Theory [1.1] This paper presents and applies an analytic model for interpreting representations of gender, sexuality, and relationality in the words, music, and images of popular music videos. To illustrate the relevance of our approach, we have selected two songs by mainstream female artists who offer compelling reflections on the nature of heterosexual love and the challenges it poses for both men and women. -

INTRODUCTION How is the law to react when a claimant wishes to conceal the fact of his arrest for fear that damage to his private and family life and/or reputation would occur if it was known? It is a well-established legal principle that legal proceedings should be heard in public and freely reported.
