When we get bombarded with low-cost 59 features and TV programmes Grado SR225e recapping the highs and lows in a greatest ‘who’s hot and what’s not’ rundown of the last 12 months. Amongst the season’s inevitable ‘100 best of...’ moments of 2014 comes the timely and very welcome news that vinyl sales have reached an 18-year high with more than one million records sold so far this year. It doesn’t sound much I know, but when you consider that the last time vinyl achieved this level of sales was back in 1996 you’ll understand it marks a significant change in our music buying habits. The news that vinyl’s popularity is on the rise is unlikely to come as much of a surprise to regular Hi-Fi Choice readers who, like us, have valiantly supported the 107 B&W T7 format and its sonic virtues throughout its mass market decline. But if the media storm that followed is anything to go by, the news seems to have come as a surprise to the rest of the music-buying public, with many unaware 99 that the format still even existed! While the increase is undoubtedly good news for the record industry with plans by The Official Record Chart Company to launch a weekly vinyl chart, it’s good news for the hi-fi industry too. Christmas is likely to see a further increase in sales and the knock-on effect will mean more record releases and inevitably more new vinyl-related products. 2015 looks to be shaping up Pink Floyd The Endless River nicely for both music and hi-fi fans. “I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about.” E Y Harburg Purpose + Grace started as a list of songs and a list of possible guests. It is a wide mixture of material, from a traditional song I first heard 50 years ago, other songs that have been with me for decades, waiting to be arranged, to new original songs. You stand in a long line when you perform songs like this, you honour the ancestors, but hopefully the songs become, if only briefly your own, or a part of you. To call on my friends and peers to make this recording has been a great pleasure. Turning the two lists into a coherent whole was joyous. On previous recordings I’ve invited guest musicians to play their instruments, here, I asked singers for their unique contributions to these songs. Accompanying song has always been my favourite occupation, so it made perfect sense to have vocal and instrumental collaborations. In 1976 I had just released my first album and had been picked up by a heavy, old school music business manager whose avowed intent was to make me a star. I was not averse to the concept, and went straight from small folk clubs to opening shows for Steeleye Span at the biggest halls in the country. Early the next year June Tabor asked me if I would accompany her on tour. I was ecstatic and duly reported to my manager, who told me I was a star and didn’t play for other people.

Fingerstyle Guitar Solos from the playing of DaveyGraham, Blind Blake, Stefan Grossman Bert Janschand John Renbourn using standardtuning transcribed by Peter Billam and some pieces by Peter Billam ©Peter J Billam, 2017 This score is offered under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence; see creativecommons.org This edition 7 September 2021. www.pjb.com.au Finger-style Folk-guitar Instrumentals These scores are something I always wished I had when I was fingerpicking steel-strung guitars in the the folk clubs of London in the late 1960s. Included are instrumentals for solo guitar, all in standard tuning, including a couple of my own, but mostly from the early albums of Davey Graham, Stefan Grossman, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Everyone trying to play the folk guitar must own those albums ! not to mention those by Al Stewart, John Martyn, RoyHarper,Dando Shaft, the Incredible String Band . it was a moment of great creative flowering. Theyplayed often with a Capo on second or third fret, and mostly in triplet-rhythm, which I have notated in 12/16 and 9/16 to makethe beats clearer by grouping them under the same beam. An ascii-tab tablature edition of these pieces is also available. Davey Graham was playing jazz standards - tune, chords and bass - just as a piano trio could. And not so much by brute virtuosity, asbyintelligence: by letting the arrangement growout from the guitar.Just consult Cry Me a River on youtube to see hownaturally the playing lies on Davey’s six strings. Blind Blake, star of Piedmont blues, recorded more than 100 sides in Chicago in 1927-1932, and was one of the great influences on Gary Davis.

Sir! “All those people who organized clubs for nothing and paid you out of their own pocket, and fed you and put you on the train the next morning, and put you to bed when you were drunk! What [the government is] doing, is taking notice of the fact that something’s going on for the last more than 40 years. It’s called the folk revival. They’ve ignored it for that long. And someone has suddenly taken notice, and that’s okay. A bit of profile isn’t gonna hurt us — and I say us, the plural, for the folk scene — isn’t gonna hurt us at all.” In the same year as Carthy’s moment of recognition, something happened that did hurt the folk scene. Lal Waterson, Carthy’s sister-in- law, bandmate, near neighbor and close friend, died of cancer.

Topic Records 80th Anniversary Start time: 8pm Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes with interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston discusses the history behind the world’s oldest independent label ahead of this collaborative performance. When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..

The Folk Club of Reston-Herndon Preserving the traditions of Folk Music, Folk Lore, and Gentle Folk Ways www.RestonHerndonFolkClub.com Volume 28, Issue 7 July 2012 July 10 Showcase – Scott Malyszka & Friends When I was a spiritual person in my younger days, I loved a good sermon. Now you ask various church people what makes a good sermon, and you'll have trouble getting a lot of agreement. Some people want to hear comfortable, familiar platitudes, and some like loud shouting and stomping around. Others expect the preacher to give a deep academic exposition of a text or topic. I knew one strange guy who would say, "If I don't feel guilty and ashamed after a sermon, then that preacher isn't doing his job." Whoa, yikes! I always felt that a good sermon simply meant telling a good story. When a person could stand in front of an audience and paint stories in their imaginations, well that's what I liked. And when I had the task of delivering a sermon, I tried to put together twenty minutes of good stories. I modeled my sermons on Garrison Keeler and John Steinbeck rather than Billy Graham or Jimmy Swaggart, the most popular preachers back then. After many years as a church person I came to the cynical conclusion that most people go to church to see their friends and to be entertained by the sermon and the music. I'm not a spiritual person now, but I do have a great appreciation for friends, stories, and music. I'm always finding intriguing new melodies from fiddle tunes and songs, and writing my own songs is my way of making up stories today.

SMALL GAMES OF CHANCE Jonathan Wesley Bell © 2018, JONATHAN WESLEY BELL, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 1928 Plantation Sainte Elisabeth Annunciation Sunday March 25. 9:45 am. Geneva, Alabama Big and black the cast iron skillet slams against the wall. Bam! With that she calls out “damn Annunciation Sunday.” Her message pulses through the shanty like an orgasm. It gives no release. Solidified bacon fat layered the skillet bottom. Most of that slips to the floor in white lard cakes to skid about in pools of drippings. Glancing at the floor May thinks, “damnation, I’ll have to mop the floor again before Cousin Chinless comes.” The angry woman stands at the kitchen sink. She leans forward close to the room’s only window. Although small the window holds a large landscape for her to scrutinize--and scrutinize again--so she’s been doing this for the past several minutes. From the shanty on the rise May scans for her wandering husband. Looking for him down the long sweep of fields. May’s backdrop is kitchen gloom. Kerosene lamp stands dark on the big round table behind her. Wild flowers in a water glass on the table wilt in the murk. Gloom confines the sunshine into an oval tight around her head. Sunlight, extreme, warped by cheap glass. It shimmers down her in a water music motion. She tenses full-frontal to the window frame, letting the cosmos pass over her in its inexorable wasting. White gold on May’s throat, face and hair. May is carved moonstone. Translucent in such strong morning light.
