Using scant archive material, interviews and some speculative theorising, this study hopes to recount something of Hill’s life and assess his place in the canon of English literature with particular focus on A Cage of Shadows (1973), the account of his impoverished upbringing in the Black Country. -

Adaptation, Inspiration, Dialogue: E.M. Forster and His Oeuvre in Contemporary Culture Krzysztof Fordoński University of Warsaw Abstract The article aims at charting the position of Edward Morgan Forster and his works in contemporary English language culture. It presents various forms of adaptations of or responses to the works of Forster, concentrating on those which have been created since the writer’s death in 1970. The discussed material consists of approximately one hundred instances of various works of art related in a number of ways to Forster’s oeuvre and biography: adaptations, works inspired by Forster’s oeuvre or biography, and, finally, works which enter into a dialogue with Forster and his views. Radio plays, operas, plays, movies, musicals, comic books, concept albums, etc. have been included as well. The paper also touches upon Forster’s reception among scholars and in political journal- ism. The paper is supplemented with lists of various adaptations. Keywords: E.M. Forster have played an important role in the English-speaking world and beyond it1 ever since his position was first generally recognised after the publication of Howards End in 1910.2 Forster’s presence was originally felt the most clearly through his literary works, namely novels and short stories. Yet, with the passage of time, he began to exert influence also as a reviewer, an essayist, and a radio broadcaster. Artists – at first fellow novelists but gradually also playwrights, composers, graphic artists, and others – found in Forster’s oeuvre and life a greatly various source of creative inspiration which continues to be fruitful fifty years after the writer’s death. -

I highlight how an exploration of the ‘national voice’ constitutes both an idealisation of musical sound and national belonging. Through voice, I offer not only a new methodological approach to the question of musical nationalism, but also an understanding of its embodiment through concepts of gender and sexuality. -

The Bbc Archive Post-Jimmy Savile: Irreparable Damage Or Recoverable Ground?
THE BBC ARCHIVE POST-JIMMY SAVILE: IRREPARABLE DAMAGE OR RECOVERABLE GROUND? Rowan Aust and Amy Holdsworth Clad in a gold-lamé tracksuit, jacket unzipped to reveal a blue T-shirt emblazoned with the broadcast dates of the BBC’s long-running pop music show Top of the Pops (1964–2006), presenter Jimmy Savile returned, aged eighty, to co-host its final installment. So iconic was his relationship with the show that he was given the honor of symbolically turning off the studio lights for the final time. Behind the stage, walking past electrical rigging, the veteran broadcaster sighed and gently shook his head with sadness as he flipped the switch; the studio lights shut down in sequence and the scene went to black. Five years later, following Savile’s death in 2011, this scene was revisited to symbolize another ending. Layered against the celestial yet celebratory tone of contemporary pop act Florence and the Machine’s “Cosmic Love” (complete with sections of harp glissando) the sequence formed part of the concluding section of the tribute program Sir Jimmy Savile: As It Happened (2011). Part of a series of televised memorials and deftly employing 60 years’ worth of BBC television archive content alongside testimonials from Savile’s colleagues, peers and fans, the program worked to remind the viewer of the centrality of Savile to both the BBC and British popular culture. Broadcaster Chris Evans’ voice-over reminded us that “for six decades, Sir Jimmy Savile was part of the fabric of British life” and concluded with the line, “Now, Sir Jimmy has gone, but undoubtedly his legend will live on.” Less than a year later, this line is infused with dark irony: in 2012 Jimmy Savile is exposed as having been a voracious sexual predator and is at the heart of the biggest sexual abuse scandal in British history. -

Women We Loved: Paradoxes of public and private in the biographical television drama Abstract: Broadcast to critical acclaim and relatively large audiences for its niche channel, the Women We Loved season (BBC Four, November 2009) consisted of biographical dramatisations of three prominent female figures of 20th century British culture. These dramas shared in common narratives that centre on two aspects of public and private: the tension between public career and personal life, and the discrepancy between celebrity persona and private individual. Combining theoretical insights from feminist studies of biography with close textual analysis, this article analyses how performance, aesthetics and narrative express the ambivalent placement of their protagonists between public and private sphere. Three prominent figures of twentieth century British culture with seemingly little in common except that, according to the title of a season of biographical dramas broadcast on BBC Four in November 2009, they were Women We Loved. These dramas, supplemented by documentary and performance programming, furnished the niche arts and culture channel with some of its highest ever ratings (see Table 1.1). The selection of these famous women had an economic logic, as it allowed BBC Four schedulers to exploit extant archive programming showcasing Fonteyn, Fields and Blyton. Moreover, these prominent figures of 20th century culture are likely to be meaningful and intriguing to the core BBC Four audience of older, middle-class viewers. But it also has a cultural logic: dedicating whole evenings to reassessing these women was a reaffirmation of their place in the public sphere, and an exploration of British cultural history befitting the BBC’s ‘intelligent’ digital channel. -

It was produced by BBC Schools and Colleges and deemed to be very successful. The production was one of a trio of programmes entitled ‘Health Hazards’, from the series Twentieth Century Focus, which reflected issues relevant to teenagers over a period of social change from the 1960s to the 1970s. -

Bringing together historical frameworks, and using them to analyse a range of examples not considered together within this context previously, the main finding is that the use of spectacle to engage the audience into a visceral response cuts across all of the examples analysed, regardless of the subject matter being explored. Drawing on a media archaeological approach, the dissertation draws parallels with the way in which pre-cinema engaged an audience where the primary point of engagement came from the image itself, rather than a narrative. Within a documentary context, which is generally understood as a genre which is there to educate or inform an audience, the primacy of spectacle calls for a re-evaluation of the form and function of documentary itself. -

11 Mabel Constanduros Different voices, voicing difference Gilli Bush-Bailey On 3 October 1929, The Stage published its weekly column on ‘The Variety Stage’, beginning with a review of the current entertainment on offer at Oswald Stoll’s ‘people’s palace of entertainment’, the London Coliseum: Making her first appearance in variety here this week is Mabel Constanduros, an artist who has achieved considerable fame in broad- casting and has added thereto with appearances at concert centres. Miss Constanduros has made the study of the cockney woman and girl her particular work, and whether she is suggesting the poor little child- mother looking after her youngest sister and selling lavender to keep the home fires burning, the prim marm who directs a children’s concert and makes eyes at the curate, or the mixture of hard work, good temper, and complaint that goes to the making of Mrs Buggins, she is always true to life in her character drawing. Monday afternoon found her suffering somewhat from nervousness in her new environment, but her greeting was sincere, and it was clear that Miss Constanduros has many admirers already and will add greatly to their number.1 As the voice of BBC Radio’s The Buggins Family, Mabel Constanduros was among a new generation of performers to make her name on the ‘wireless’ in the safety of the studio broadcast, where her audience was imagined but unseen. Broadcasting fame soon led to the demand for live stage appearances where, at the London Coliseum, her very visible audi- ence were arranged over three vast tiers of seating and could number anything up to 2,500 people.
