The Legacy and Traditions of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby has taken place annually in Louis- ville, Kentucky since 1875. It was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. at his track he called Churchill Downs, and it has run continuously since that first race. This first jewel of the Triple Crown has produced famous winners, with thirteen of these winners gaining that Triple Crown title. Lewis limited the Derby to only 3-year old horses. The race has evolved and grown over time and has changed since its first running, remaining an important event for more than a century. Through the study of the Derby’s influential historic traditions, notable winners and horse farms in Kentucky, and its profound cultural TABLE OF CONTENTS impact, this program will identify and explore these dif- Background and History…..2 ferent aspects that all contribute to the excitement and legacy of the “most exciting two minutes in sports.” Curriculum Standards…..3 Traditions ................ 4-8 Triple Crown ............ 9 Derby Winners ........ 10-11 Notable Horse Farms….12-13 Significant Figures…...15 Bibliography………….16 Image list…………….17-18 Derby Activities…….19-22 To replicate the races he witnessed in Europe, Meri- wether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of explorer Wil- liam Clark, created three races in the United States that resembled those he’d attended in Europe. • Introduction to Gender-Balanced Inbreeding
Gender-Balanced Inbreeding in the Pedigrees of Outstanding Runners by Kathleen Irwin Most people understand the concept of inbreeding when it comes to Thoroughbred pedigrees. Anytime an ancestor appears more than once in the 5-cross pedigree, this is called "inbreeding." The following example shows a horse inbred to Danzig. (See colored blocks) Gender-balanced inbreeding occurs when the ancestor appears as the progenitor of offspring of both genders in the pedigree of the subject animal. For instance, a Northern Dancer son in one part of the pedigree and a Northern Dancer daughter in another part. Or to go one better, a Northern Dancer son producing a daughter, and a Northern Dancer daughter producing a son. When perusing pedigrees, I often see successful runners which have resulted from one Northern Dancer sire line over another Northern Dancer sire line, and there is nothing wrong with that. But it is my experience that a sort of vigor and stability is added when opposing genders are woven into the tapestry of inbreeding. In the Animal Kingdom pedigree above, you see that his Lyphard inbreeding is actually beautifully balanced by gender. The first Lyphard produces a daughter who produces a son. The second appearance of Lyphard shows him producing a son who produces a daughter. French Derby and Guineas winner Lope De Vega possesses a similar pedigree exhibiting gender-balanced inbreeding. This time, the duplicated individual is French Champion Machiavellian. It is interesting to note that Machiavellian himself has a gender-balanced pedigree, which you can see at this PedigreeQuery link. Another excellent runner with gender-balanced inbreeding is Prized.

Dubbed the “Run for the Roses,” the Derby features three-year-old thoroughbreds racing a distance of 1.25 miles. Today, some 150,000 spectators gather annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, sometimes referred to as “the greatest two minutes in sports.” Besides placing bets on horses, Derby fans are famous for drinking mint juleps, singing “Old Kentucky Home” and wearing flamboyant hats. The Kentucky Derby was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., grandson of explorer William Clark, of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame. Clark, who was inspired by horse races he’d seen in Europe, raised the money to build Churchill Downs on land donated by his uncles.
