Email: [email protected] Received: 23 July 2013, Revised and Accepted: 03 Oct 2013 ABSTRACT Objectives: Molluscs are highly delicious seafood and they are also very good source for biomedically imported products. Among the molluscs some have pronounced pharmacological activities or other properties which are useful in biomedical area. Methods: In the present study glycosaminoglycans was isolated from two marine gastropods such as Babylonia spirata and Phalium glaucum. Results: The isolated glycosaminoglycans were quantified in crude samples and they were estimated as 8.7 gm/kg & 5.3 gm/kg crude in Babylonia spirata and Phalium glaucum respectively. Both the gastropods showed the anticoagulant activity of the crude samples 134 USP units/mg and 78 USP units/mg correspondingly in B. spirata and P. glaucum. In the agarose gel electrophoresis using acetate buffer, the band of the crude samples studied showed the band with similar mobility to standard heparin sulfate. FTIR analysis reveals the presence of anticoagulant substance signals at different ranges. Conclusion: Among the two gastropods B. spirata showed more anticoagulant activity than that of P. glaucum. A total of 23 species of molluscs (16 species of gastropods belonging to 12 Andhra Pradesh, India families and 7 species of bivalves representing 5 families) have been reported in the present study. Among these, gastropods such as Umbonium vestiarium, Telescopium telescopium and Pirenella cingulata, and bivalves like Crassostrea madrasensis and Meretrix meretrix are found to be the most dominant species in these backwaters. Box 1346, Gloucester Point, Virginia 23062 ABSTRACT Planktonic larvae of benthic fauna that can grow quickly in the plankton and reduce their larval period duration lessen their exposure to pelagic predators and reduce the potential for advection away from suitable habitats. Veined rapa whelks (Rapana venosa, Muricidae) lay egg masses that release planktonic veliger larvae from May through August in Chesapeake Bay, USA. Two groups of veliger larvae hatched from egg masses during June and August 2000 were cultured in the laboratory. Egg mass incubation time (time from deposition to hatch) ranged from 18–26 d at water temperatures between 22°C and 27°C. -

For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with ocean - divers, snorkelers, beach goers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells, but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam. © 2019 JETIR June 2019, Volume 6, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) AGGLUTININS WITH BINDING SPECIFICITY FOR MAMMALIAN ERYTHROCYTES IN THE WHOLE BODY EXTRACT OF MARINE GASTROPODS Thana Lakshmi, K. (Department of Zoology, Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Nagercoil – 629 004). Abstract Presence of agglutinins in the whole body extract of some locally available species of marine gastropods was studied by adopting haemagglutination assay using 10 different mammalian erythrocytes. Of the animals surveyed, 14 species showed the presence of agglutinins for one or more type of erythrocytes. The agglutinating activity varied with the species as well as with the type of erythrocytes. Rabbit and rat erythrocytes were agglutinated by all the species studied. Highest activity of the agglutinins was recorded in the extract of Fasciolaria tulipa and Fusinus nicobaricus for rabbit erythrocytes, as revealed by a HA (Haemagglutination) titre of 1024, the maximum value obtained in the study. Trochus radiatus, Tonna cepa, Bufornia echineta, Volegalea cochlidium, Chicoreus ramosus, Chicoreus brunneus, Babylonia spirata, Babylonia zeylanica and Turbinella pyrum are among the other species, possessing strong (HA titre ranging from 128 to 512) anti-rabbit agglutinins. Agglutinins with binding specificity for rat erythrocytes have been observed in the extract of Trochus radiatus, Fasciolaria tulipa and Fusinus nicobaricus. None of the species agglutinated dog, cow, goat and buffalo erythrocytes. Agglutinins with weak activity against human erythrocytes were observed in Chicoreus brunneus (HA = 4 – 8). The present work has helped to identify potential sources of agglutinins among marine gastropods available in and around Kanyakumari District and thereby provides the baseline information, in the search for new pharmacologically valuable compounds derived from marine organisms. -

This study presents the first ever record of molluscan fauna from shapk beach of Jiwani. Amongst these fifty eight (58) species were found belonging to class gastropoda, twenty two (22) bivalves, one (1) scaphopod and one (1) polyplachopora comprised of thirty nine (39) families. Each collected samples was identified on species level as well as biometric data of certain species was calculated for both sites. Molluscan species similarity was also calculated between two sites. For gastropods it was remain 74 %, for bivalves 76 %, for Polyplacophora 100 % and for Scapophoda 0 %. Meanwhile total similarity of molluscan species between two sites was calculated 75 %. Notable identified species from Bandri and Shapak includes Oysters, Muricids, Babylonia shells, Trochids, Turbinids and shells belonging to Pinnidae, Arcidae, Veneridae families are of commercial significance which can be exploited for a variety of purposes like edible, ornamental, therapeutic, dye extraction, and in cement industry etc. -
