  • Eno and the Jets: Controlled Chaos Eno and the Jets: Controlled Chaos
3/23/13 Rolling Stone: Eno and the Jets: Controlled Chaos Eno and the Jets: Controlled Chaos By Cynthia Dagnal From Rolling Stone, September 12 1974, from the Jeffrey Morgan Archive CHICAGO - The legend of ex-Roxy synthesizer player Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno is, we were told, as formidable as the name. It preceded him in press releases from England which proclaimed him "this surrealist rock superstar," a "sylph-like electronics guru," and "a cadaver we've all come to love and recognize . the scaramouche of the synthesizer." His sexual exploits, we were also told, would apparently make both Don Juan and de Sade seem grossly overrated, and promotion women called ahead with breathless descriptions of his magnetism and his "intellect." He was purportedly beautiful hermaphroditic, sensual and seductive. "The man that groupies of three continents have come to know as The Refreshing Experience" was coming to devastate our town with his presence and we were never to be the same again. His new solo album, Here Come the Warm Jets, also preceded him into town - a very compelling experiment in controlled chaos and by his own self-dictated standards a near success. Until then there had been only descriptions of his music, promo-supplied outbursts like "inspired mayhem." And there was the well-documented European success of Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry's moviola vision of rock oldies that jumped the British charts and captured the continent's imagination, so they say. The group failed to move anything on an introductory U.S.

Preliminary Program, PRE CONFERENCE Southern Political Science Association 2017 Annual Meeting version 4.0 January 9, 2017 2908 2908 Office - Thursday Thursday Meetings 7:00am-6:30pm Boardroom 2911 Registration - Thursday Thursday Meetings 7:00am-6:00pm 2101 2101 Executive Council I Meeting Thursday Meetings 8:00am-11:00am 2101 Political Philosophy for the Many Thursday Political Theory 8:00am-9:30am Participants Jarrett Carty, Concordia University David D Corey, Baylor University Bryan-Paul Frost, UL-Lafayette Daniel DiLeo, Penn State Altoona According to contemporary commentators, political philosophy came into being as a reaction to democracy (Ober) or as a cure for the tyrannic impulses of the most ambitious, capable, and privileged (Bloom). In neither account was it intended for a mass audience. And in fact, in Plato’s Republic, Socrates warned against exposing all but those few fully possessed of mature virtue to penetrating examination of conventional presuppositions. Today’s teachers of political philosophy take advantage of political philosophy’s power to challenge students to examine what they have accepted on faith. If they are bereft of such faith, they may take political philosophy’s challenge to convention as a call to destructive iconoclasm or license to indulge immoderate desires. The problem is that we cannot vouch for the mature virtue of our students. The teacher of political philosophy is therefore confronted with profound ethical questions. Should she or he keep the radically zetetic essence of political philosophy under wraps, saving it for those who have built a record of serious study over a number of courses and have come to be known through informal conversations? One cost of doing so is to make initial studies less exciting or more ideological than they should be.
