Four species of lichenized Ascomycetes are mentioned for the first time from Argentina: Endocarpon pallidulum, Placidium arboreum, Pyxine astridiana and Usnea michauxii. A brief description of each one is presented considering morphological, anatomical and chemical characteristics. The distribution of 68 lichen species in Argentina is also extended. Resumen: Se mencionan por primera vez para el país cuatro especies de Ascomycetes liquenizados: Endocarpon pallidulum, Placidium arboreum, Pyxine astridiana y Usnea michauxii. Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science 126(2):129–152 LICHENS AND ALLIED FUNGI OF THE INDIANA FOREST ALLIANCE ECOBLITZ AREA, BROWN AND MONROE COUNTIES, INDIANA INCORPORATED INTO A REVISED CHECKLIST FOR THE STATE OF INDIANA James C. Lendemer: Institute of Systematic Botany, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA ABSTRACT. Based upon voucher collections, 108 lichen species are reported from the Indiana Forest Alliance Ecoblitz area, a 900 acre unit in Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests, Brown and Monroe Counties, Indiana. The lichen biota of the study area was characterized as: i) dominated by species with green coccoid photobionts (80% of taxa); ii) comprised of 49% species that reproduce primarily with lichenized diaspores vs. 44% that reproduce primarily through sexual ascospores; iii) comprised of 65% crustose taxa, 29% foliose taxa, and 6% fruticose taxa; iv) one wherein many species are rare (e.g., 55% of species were collected fewer than three times) and fruticose lichens other than Cladonia were entirely absent; and v) one wherein cyanolichens were poorly represented, comprising only three species. Taxonomic diversity ranged from 21 to 56 species per site, with the lowest diversity sites concentrated in riparian corridors and the highest diversity sites on ridges. Low Gap Nature Preserve, located within the study area, was found to have comparable species richness to areas outside the nature preserve, although many species rare in the study area were found only outside preserve boundaries. Sets of rare species are delimited and discussed, as are observations as to the overall low abundance of lichens on corticolous substrates and the presence of many unhealthy foliose lichens on mature tree boles. -

Stenroos1 Key words Abstract Though most of the lichenicolous fungi belong to the Ascomycetes, their phylogenetic placement based on molecular data is lacking for numerous species. In this study the phylogenetic placement of 19 species of cladoniicolous species lichenicolous fungi was determined using four loci (LSU rDNA, SSU rDNA, ITS rDNA and mtSSU). The phylogenetic Pilocarpaceae analyses revealed that the studied lichenicolous fungi are widespread across the phylogeny of Lecanoromycetes. Protothelenellaceae One species is placed in Acarosporales, Sarcogyne sphaerospora; five species in Dactylosporaceae, Dactylo Scutula cladoniicola spora ahtii, D. deminuta, D. glaucoides, D. parasitica and Dactylospora sp.; four species belong to Lecanorales, Stictidaceae Lichenosticta alcicorniaria, Epicladonia simplex, E. stenospora and Scutula epiblastematica. The genus Epicladonia Stictis cladoniae is polyphyletic and the type E. sandstedei belongs to Leotiomycetes. Phaeopyxis punctum and Bachmanniomyces uncialicola form a well supported clade in the Ostropomycetidae. Epigloea soleiformis is related to Arthrorhaphis and Anzina. While the threat to the host tree is reasonably well-known, the threat myrtle rust poses to the associated biota is poorly understood. As a contribution to our knowledge of this, a preliminary list of the lichenised mycobiota that utilise pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) as a phorophyte is presented, based on a survey of the specimens in two herbaria with extensive collections from the natural range of this endemic tree species. -

In the current project, which focuses on the identification and preliminary characterization of these bacterial symbionts, the species composition of the resident associate microbiota of eleven species of lichen was investigated using both 16S rDNA sequencing of isolated bacteria growing in pure culture and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region amplified from DNA isolated directly from lichen samples. Gram-positive bacteria appear to be the most prevalent, especially actinomycetes, although bacilli were also observed. Gamma-proteobacteria and species from the Bacteroides/Chlorobi group were also observed. Among identified genera are Rhodococcus, Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Pseudomonas, Sporosarcina, Agreia, Methylobacterium and Stenotrophomonas . Nelsen, [email protected] Abstract: We present a revised phylogeny of lichenised Dothideomyceta (Arthoniomycetes and Dothideomycetes) based on a combined data set of nuclear large subunit (nuLSU) and mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU) rDNA data. Dothideomyceta is supported as monophyletic with monophyletic classes Arthoniomycetes and Dothideomycetes; the latter, however, lacking support in this study. The phylogeny of lichenised Arthoniomycetes supports the current division into three families: Chrysothrichaceae (Chrysothrix), Arthoniaceae (Arthonia s. l., Cryptothecia, Herpothallon), and Roccellaceae (Chiodecton, Combea, Dendrographa, Dichosporidium, Enterographa, Erythrodecton, Lecanactis, Opegrapha, Roccella, Roccellographa, Schismatomma, Simonyella). The widespread and common Arthonia caesia is strongly supported as a (non-pigmented) member of Chrysothrix. Monoblastiaceae, Strigulaceae, and Trypetheliaceae are recovered as unrelated, monophyletic clades within Dothideomycetes. Also, the genera Arthopyrenia (Arthopyreniaceae) and Cystocoleus and Racodium (Capnodiales) are confirmed asDothideomycetes but unrelated to each other. -

A Preliminary List of the Lichens of New York

HARRIS1 ABSTRACT. – A list of 808 species and 7 subspecific taxa of lichens known to the author to occur in New York state is presented. The new combination Myriospora immersa (Fink ex J. Hedrick) R. C. Harris is made. The rationale for publishing this admittedly incomplete list of New York's lichens is that I am unlikely to ever have time to improve it significantly. The list has been accumulated more or less haphazardly over a period of twenty plus years. Many problems have been left unresolved. It is largely based on specimens held by The New York Botanical Garden (NY), Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BKL) and Buffalo Museum of Science (BUF), to a lesser extent Cornell University (CUP) and Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University (FH) and a few from New York State Museum (NYS) . The holdings of the New York State Museum represent a large collection not yet fully studied and will surely add significantly to knowledge of the state's lichen diversity. Surviving specimens for the earliest publication on New York lichens by Halsey (1824) are yet to be studied. Voucher information is available from the author upon request. The collections in BKL and BUF have been databased and copies can also be made available. For those interested, the history of lichenology in New York has been summarized by LaGreca (2001). Some literature records have been included if I consider them reliable, i.e., Brodo (1968) or significant, i.e., Lowe (1939). No doubt I have missed some worthy literature records in recent revisions.
