1841 Census for Woking 1 1841 Census for Woking This census is useful for Woking insofar as the Tithe Map is of a similar date and although it is unusual for a property or even a street to be shown in the census returns, the owner and/or occupier in the Tithe Apportionment can, with luck be found in the returns. Although in some instances it would appear that the enumerator visited each dwelling in a pre-determined order, it should not be assumed that adjoining entries are necessarily neighbours. This is certainly the case in respect of the section covering the Town Street, Shackleford and Kingfield tythings. The enumerator obviously entered what he heard and the entry is often incorrect, the name of the inhabitant being spelt incorrectly. In addition, the spelling of some of the enumerators leaves a lot to be desired. In some instances the original entry has been corrected here by reference to the baptismal register for St Peter’s but this has not been possible in every case. Sometimes the enumerator has used abbreviations eg Willm for William and these names have been amended to the full spelling. This has sometimes been difficult due to the enumerator’s writing. Some of the abbreviations relate to occupations and these abbreviations have been left unaltered. Examples are: 1 = start of household Y = born in Surrey ag lab = agricultural labourer d = days fs = female servant I = born in Ireland ind = independent j = journeyman lab = labourer m = months ms = male servant N = not born in Surrey paper m = paper maker pump m = pump maker S = born in Scotland shoe m = shoe maker U = unoccupied 2 Exact ages in years are given for children up to the age of 14 inclusive. For persons of 15 and older, ages are given in five-year groups indicated by the youngest year of the group, that is, ages from 15 to 19 inclusive are shown as 15. Within each household there may be more than one family; this can usually be deciphered by the change of surname coupled with a husband and wife of similar age with children. Many houses would have been sub- divided with separate families living in what would have been a single family house. The bold figure shown in the last column is the page number in that section of the original census. Where there a certain amount of evidence that a particular family was living in a particular house the name of that house is shown in red italics in the first column. This transcription includes part of the census returns for Horsell as some houses were originally in Horsell parish. Phillip Arnold January 2007. Town Street, Shackleford and Kingfield – HO 107/1080/6 The returns for this part of Woking are grouped in the original returns according to the tything in which the families lived – Town Street, Shackleford and Kingfield. The only exception to this format is in respect of Park Farm, Round Bridge and Hoe Bridge which appear at the front of the returns. The streets and the houses in those streets are not named, so, for example, it is not possible to tell whether families grouped under Town Street are living in High Street or Church Street. Moreover, although families are grouped under tythings, those tythings are scattered in the returns indicating that the houses were not visited in rotation and families appearing one after another are not necessarily neighbours. The returns for these three tythings are, therefore, shown in two formats, the first version being the format of the original returns and the second re-arranged so that the information is in a logical sequence namely Park 3 Farm, Hoe Bridge, Round Bridge, Town Street, Shackleford and Kingfield. In both versions, however, families shown one after the other are not necessarily neighbours. • Consultation on Woking College Taking an Under-Lease on Part of the Site and Buildings of the Old Woking Community Centre
Consultation on Woking College taking an under-lease on part of the site and buildings of the Old Woking Community Centre Period of Consultation 1 April - 6 May 2021 Introduction During the Coronavirus crisis, Woking College has been using parts of the Old Woking Community Centre facilities to manage its social distancing requirements. Woking College and the Community Centre have established a good working relationship during this period and have agreed that more formal arrangements to use the Community Centre premises would be beneficial to both the College and the Community Centre and importantly better meet the needs of the local and wider Woking community. The Old Woking Community Centre site in Sundridge Road is owned by Woking Borough Council and it granted a Ground Lease to “The Old Woking and District Community Association” from 29 September 1961 for 99 years; lease expiry 30 October 2060. The Community Centre owns the buildings. The Community Centre Trustees are supportive of the proposal below to Lease part of the site and buildings to Woking College. The under-lease arrangements will provide for Woking College to have exclusive use of certain parts but it will have some use of other parts of the building during the College day and the community can use most of the building outside College hours. As a 16-19 Academy permission is needed from the Department for Education for Woking College to be able to invest in the building, it is also required that the under-lease is for as long as possible. The proposal It is proposed that Woking College takes an under-lease on parts (see green areas in diagram below) of the OWCC site with the term of tenure completing 28 September 2060, being one day short of the Ground Lease end date.

  • Old Woking & Industry
OLD WOKING & INDUSTRY Iain Wakeford 2017 ast week I briefly mentioned (and illustrated) the Britax Company at L Byfleet who in 1960 took over Cyclemaster in Chertsey Road - later going on to sell thousands of car seats and seat- belts before moving away to Hampshire. But they were just one of many industries at that time that no longer call our area ‘home’. James Walker’s at Maybury was once one of this area’s major employers making packings and seals in their Lion Works factory. It had moved here from London in the 1920’s to the site formerly occupied by Martinsyde’s Aircraft and Motorcycle works (and before that the site of the Oriental Institute and the Royal Dramatic College). Whilst their 1960’s offices still remain by the Lion Retail Park, their ‘Lion Works’ and other satellite factories in Old Woking have long gone. Also in Old Woking in the late 1950’s and early 60’s was the Kenwood Manufacturing Co Ltd, originally founded in a shed off Goldsworth Road by Kenneth Wood. A blue plaque has recently been unveiled there to commemorate him and his world-famous food-mixer (The Chef). It was just one of the many innovative products produced at his factory in Hipley Street, Old Woking, where in March 1959 a new office was officially opened, with the works then employing about 120 staff. Sadly it wouldn’t be too long before Kenwood’s outgrew their accommodation here and by the end of the decade they too would move away to Hampshire.
