PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

CHANGES TO THE DRIVER GUIDE, REV 9/21 The information below replaces the information found in the current guide. REAL ID UPDATE By May 3, 2023, standard driver licenses will no longer be an acceptable form of identification for boarding domestic flights and entering some secure federal facilities, like military bases and nuclear power plants. Go to Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) website (www.tsa.gov) for a complete list of federally approved forms of identification. Even though the effective date for REAL ID is May 3, 2023 it only affects people who want to travel by plane or access certain secure federal facilities. A standard driver license will work for the U.S. travel like driving in Washington, across state lines, or riding a train. Washington’s enhanced driver licenses (EDLs) are REAL ID compliant and valid for air travel within the United States.

One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan.

  • Head Coach Andy Reid Press Conference 1/14/07 Injuries
Head Coach Andy Reid Press Conference 1/14/07 Injuries/opening remarks: “Really the only injuries that we’ve got here, we’ve got a couple of them is [RG] Shawn Andrews had a contusion in his neck. He’s not sure exactly when it happened, but he had a tremendous amount of swelling there at halftime. He actually was having a tough time seeing. So, they rushed him to the emergency room and had him checked out and tried to get some of the swelling down in his neck. You saw him around today; you probably saw that he had a pretty good lump there. [LB] Shawn Barber has an ankle sprain. It happened on the last play of the first half and he was not able to return.” “I thought the effort yesterday was good. It was a heck of a game, back and forth. We give a tremendous amount of credit to [Saints head coach] Sean Payton and the Saints. They played very good football and their staff put together a nice plan, offensively, defensively, and special teams. We wish them the best down the road. They sure have a good football team, so I think they are going to do very well. On the other hand, I was proud of our football team for the way they handled the last few weeks here. They showed a lot of grit. When it wasn’t looking too good, when [QB] Donovan [McNabb] went down they were able to bounce back and take their game up a notch, coaches and players included.

I feel fortunate to have spent so many Fridays singing, playing bingo, sharing memories, laughing, and working together. I would also like to thank my advisor, Frank Gunderson, who has supported my inclination to think differently by preferring not to counter my intuition and curiosity as a scholar. By mentoring me via a “politics of subtraction” in this way, he effectively opened up a space in which I could imagine and construct this project. I am also grateful to the members of my committee, Michael Bakan, Charles Brewer, and Alice-Ann Darrow, for their input and support in this project.

  • Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.Pdf
My biggest problem is my brother, Farley Drexel Hatcher. Everybody calls him Fudge. I feel sorry for him if he’s going to grow up with a name like Fudge, but I don’t say a word. It’s none of my business. Fudge is always in my way. He messes up everything he sees. And when he gets mad he throws himself flat on the floor and he screams. And he kicks. And he bangs his fists. The only time I really like him is when he’s sleeping. He sucks four fingers on his left hand and makes a slurping noise. When Fudge saw Dribble he said, “Ohhhhh . see!” And I said, “That’s my turtle, get it? Mine! You don’t touch him.” Fudge said, “No touch.” Then he laughed like crazy. Camp Luna Pines CHAPTER 1. THE BEGINNING, BUT AFTER. (CAMP FIRE) AUDREY: Bonfire time! NOLAN: Let me tell it. KIKI: Nolan, you always tell it, let Leah do it. LEAH: Thank you, Kiki. MICHAEL: Tell it! They wanna hear it. LEAH: Hi everyone! My name is Leah and this is my year to tell the campfire story. So here goes… I believe in ghosts. Or some version of ghosts. Always have. I mean, why not? They can do anything they want— walk through walls, travel by floating, be invisible when they want to be…actually seems pretty great… In the middle of my 6th grade year, my parents moved from Chicago to Wisconsin. I became an invisible girl with invisible friends and a visible fear of everything. So after 6 weeks of being invisible at my new school, my parents decided Summer Camp was a great idea. So. They googled camps, found Camp Luna Pines, and the next thing I knew, I was being dropped off and sneaking my headphones into my backpack. I immediately realized I arrived late and followed a pack of campers into the Auditorium for Counselor Robb’s yearly camp speech, accompanied by powerpoint… CHAPTER 2. THE RULES. (CAMP AUDITORIUM) ROBB: Now the campfire has been officially lit! Welcome to your first night at Camp Luna Pines! AUDREY/KIKI: Hi Robb! ROBB: All right. It’s time for the 20th annual CRESCENT HUNT! This team hunt will begin in…3 minutes…at 8pm and will end with a winner or not when the camp bell rings at midnight.
