FY 2018-2019 Highlights • Digital Commons total downloads for 2018-2019 was 555,706. • Digital Commons collections grew by 2,629 new items. • This year there was a strong focus on supporting access to University Archives materials in Digital Commons, with the BBC Student Government Associations Archive. Other new collections include Miami Beach Urban Studios 3D renderings, and the Bioethics Education Resources (BEdR) Portal. • We continue to publish and archive electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), which include the works of new FIU graduates as well as retrospective digitization of theses and dissertations dating back to the opening of the university. 238 new ETDs and 224 retrospective ETDs were published and archived in 2018/2019. 1 | Page Growth Over the Years Digital Commons began tracking its usage in 2011. Since then, collection size has increased annually at a steady pace. Strategic partnerships across campus departments, centers and institutes as well as the development of new strategies for harvesting of content to minimize burden on faculty helped grow the collections this year. This collection includes over 400 images from SGA BBC Events from 2007- present. The document archive includes over 1,060 documents from 1993- present. Documents part of this collection include budgets, constitutions, bylaws, meeting minutes, resolutions and senate bills. This collection provides access to a unique part of student history at FIU and since it became available in the Fall of 2018 has received almost 2000 downloads. Video Collections In partnership with University Archives, FIU Media Services and several schools and centers, Digital Commons hosts various collections that include recorded lectures and other notable university events including convocation, town hall meetings and musical/theatrical performances. In total, Digital Commons collections contain 965 videos. 176 new videos were added this year alone, most from the newest collection “FIU in View”( https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/fiuinview/). These collections received a total of 625 metadata page hits and 2,505 views. 4 | Page New Research Formats Institutional Repositories have traditionally hosted papers, reports, articles and other textual materials and served as a means for opening up access to scholarship that would otherwise be restricted either through subscription based journals or simply because they are not made available online. With the changing landscape in scholarship and the development of new types of research outputs, Digital Commons has been working with faculty and researchers to provide access to new types of materials. 3D Materials This year, Digital Commons began work on hosting and sharing 3D materials from the Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS). MBUS is a unique 16,000sf facility in the 420 Lincoln Road Building that hosts an interdisciplinary array of innovative exhibitions, classes, research laboratories, and events for the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts. MBUS houses the 3,500sf Knight- sponsored CARTA Innovation Lab, which with over 33 3D printers is one of the largest 3D printing laboratories of its kind in the United States. The first 3D item in this collection is the “Tactile Map: Miami Lighthouse For The Blind” (https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/mbus/). In this model, one can sense the location and form of the Lighthouse headquarters, the forms of the structures around the Lighthouse for The Blind, the north arrow, and braille stating the streets. This year Digital Commons will continue to collect and make available additional 3D materials from MBUS. 5 | Page Research Data To expand support for Graduate Student research, Digital Commons is working towards sharing of research data sets associated with graduate student research, particularly research related to dissertations published within Digital Commons. Through a Technology Fee Grant, and in collaboration with the Division of IT and the University Graduate School, the University Libraries is building a computing infrastructure to support archiving and publishing of institutional research data sets. The new data repository is a local instance of Harvard’s Dataverse (dataverse.org) called the FIU Research Data Portal and will: 1. Provide an online centralized digital repository collection for enhanced discovery of institutional and unique research data across disciplines; 2. Archive at risk data essential to our student and faculty research in environmental sciences, Everglades research and climate change and ensure long term access; 3. Provide faculty and students data archiving services that enable PIs, researchers, and students the ability to appropriately manage, share, and preserve their research
