10 10. The Tombstone Behind the Gas Station One of Surf City’s strangest monuments, a 500-pound faux tombstone sits behind the Arco gas station at Warner Avenue and Springdale Street. A developer had proposed a 94-foot Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.-designed sign tower (which would resemble an oil derrick as a tribute to Huntington Beach’s black gold history) on that spot in the 1960s, but local citizens revolted and the project was shot down. In 1970, the bitter developer planted the tombstone, which bitterly read, in part, “Its defeat is symbolic of the democratic process in which we live.”

SURF CITY LIFEGUARDS NOT JUST A DAY AT THE BEACH ARE THE FIRST- RESPONDERS Lifeguards play a starring role in Surf City, keeping 16 million beachgoers safe each year.
