Thenp roceed 2 miles south on CO 101. Boggsville will be on the northeast side of the road. The Pioneer Historical Society of Bent County now owns the Boggsville site and the Thomas Boggs and John Prowers houses have been structurally restored through fundraisings. Boggsville, located on the Purgatoire River, was Bent Boggs, built their first home. John Wesley Prowers first used as a campsite by the Plains Indians. With the moved to the Boggs’s ranch in 1867 along with frontiers fur trade vanishing, many former mountain men found man Kit Carson and his family. A year later, with Carson work raising livestock. Through his wife’s government in poor health, his wife, Josefa, died from childbirth land grant connections, Thomas Boggs started his ranch complications. In fact, we must add ten years more for a beginning to the little story out of my own personal experience when a small lad in an Illinois town. It was spring time in the year 1868 and he was preparing to start out with a fair sized company in coYered wagons for the \Vest, expecting to stop at .Abilene, Kansas, and purchase cattle to be driven from there to Colorado, and this plan was carried out. \Vhile preparations for this migration were in progress, the Todd neighborhood in the little town was naturally an attr active place for the youngsters of that vicinity. I , as one of them, had in some unaccountable way conceived a secret hope that by some hook or crook I might be permitted to go along, as Mr. Todd was an uncle of mine. Since Marc was Kit’s biographer, and considered by John Carson, Kit’s great-grandson, to be the best of the bunch that’s written about Kit, I paid particular attention. The story is related in three paragraphs in Kit’s modest and understated autobiography, and I quickly realized it was the fodder for a good painting. Over several vis- its, Marc and I fleshed out Kit’s sparse account. In the spring of 1843, Kit was employed as a hunter for a Bent, St. Vrain & Company freight caravan bound for the states. At the Walnut Creek crossing, near the great bend of the Arkansas River, they met an escort of U.S. Dragoons with a caravan of Mexican and American trad- ers bound for Santa Fe. Texans were reputed to be on the trail raiding the Mexican trains. The U. S. Dragoons could not escort them past the Arkansas, as that was Mexican territory. Kit was offered $300 in gold to ride dispatch to the Mexican governor in Santa Fe and request Mexican cavalry to escort the train the rest of the way in.

Photo: Courtesy of History Colorado BORDERLANDS of SOUTHERN COLORADO he most prominent landmark near Pueblo, Colorado, the moun- T tain that inspired the patriotic song “America the Beautiful,” is Pikes Peak. Rising to 14,115 feet, it is named for Zebulon Mont- gomery Pike, a U.S. Army explorer who traveled through the Southwest in 1806 and 1807 on a mission of geopolitical reconnaissance, soon adding to the young nation’s lust for westward expansion. His accounts were compiled and translated into three languages for readers abroad. “Pikes Peak or Bust!” was the motto for prospectors during the Colorado gold rush. • John Simpson Hough (1833 - 1919) I would like to nominate my great-great grandfather John Simpson Hough to the Santa Fe Historic Hall of Fame. Hough arrived in Westport, MO in 1850 as a sixteen-year-old, intent on becoming an Indian trader. Hough was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Christmas Day in 1833. He had first come west in 1849 with his father, Silas Hough, but had turned back when his father died, having contracted cholera in St. Louis. Hough returned to Philadelphia where he learned the wholesale dry goods trade from his uncles, but he had "sniffed the air of the Rocky Mountains and plains" and within the year he left home and "struck a bee line for Independence." Hough had only a dollar in his pocket when he approached Seth Hays for a job in Westport. Hays, admiring young Hough's wit, told him to see the wagonmaster for the job of ox driver. Despite Hough's neat appearance, the wagonmaster hired him. He was informed, however, that "those togs" he was wearing would stampede the cattle. Hough quickly exchanged his clothes for a "Hickory shirt, corduroy pants, together with a western hat" and the next morning set out for Council Grove. After arriving at Council Grove, Hays asked Hough to stay at the post, offering him $75 per month and $100 a month once he learned the Indian language well enough to trade with them. Hough made his home there until 1855 when he moved to Westport and engaged in merchandising. He also married Mary A.

The Santa Fe Trail runs through Prowers County and served as an important route for commerce and cultural exchange in the development of the West in the mid-1800s. Prowers County is vastly populated with wildlife, which brings in several hunters and watchers each year. In addition to the wildlife, western atmosphere and historical sites, Prowers is rich in agriculture and renewable energy resources. Prowers County couples its agricultural heritage with the promise of renewable energy. Panoramic views of corn, alfalfa and dryland wheat fields are punctuated with the graceful motion of wind turbines. At the heart of the Wind Corridor, the Colorado Green Wind Power Project is one of the largest wind farms in the State of Colorado. Historic attractions bring visitors to Prowers County. A high concentration of New Deal era WPA projects can be found in the area, along with Lamar’s Madonna of the Trail monument honoring pioneer women.

2021 Santa Fe Trail Bicentennial Commemoration Youth Symposium September 22, 2021 The Santa Fe Trail Association-Bents Fort Chapter would like to invite students grades 6-8 and their teacher to join us for a special Youth Symposium associated with the 2021 commemoration of the Bicentennial of the opening of the Santa Fe Trail – the United States’ first international transportation and trade route. The one-day Symposium is closely aligned with the Colorado Social Studies standards. The Symposium is limited to 35 students plus their teachers. A maximum of five students and one teacher may apply from any school. If all spots are not filled, opportunities will go to the next schools on the waiting list. There is no cost for the Symposium, which is being funded by sponsors. Boxed lunches, water, and hand-outs will be provided.
