But the debut of this new rules package has everyone back on their heels a bit. Sure, it is the same abrasive Atlanta track, but there’s now a high probability that how you approached this race in the past will not apply this weekend.” Craven says the jury will be out on the new aero package for the first four races: “The next four races, all at completely different disciplines of race tracks, will give us an indication of which direction we are headed with the new aero package. Busch, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota for JGR, would like nothing more than to repeat his Auto Club 400 victory from last March, which happened to be his 200th career victory in NASCAR’s top three series and 54th in the Cup Series. He’s since lifted those totals to 209 overall and 57 in the Cup Series. Meanwhile, the first two races of 2020 have not gone to plan for the 2019 Cup Series champion. An engine issue in the season-opening Daytona 500 and handling issues last weekend at his hometown Las Vegas Motor Speedway have been the culprits.

(16) No. 42 Viva Vantage Chevrolet SS (Larson) McMurray Overcomes Early Setback to finish 11th at Sonoma In the first of two road course races on the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season, Jamie McMurray looked to continue his streak of three straight top-10 finishes. McMurray, driving the Cessna Patriotic Chevrolet SS, overcame an early tire issue to narrowly miss the top-10 with an 11th-place finish in the Toyota/SaveMart 350. McMurray entered the weekend as the two-time defending pole winner for the race and hoped to be just the second driver to pull-off the hat-trick of three consecutive poles at Sonoma Raceway (Ricky Rudd won three in a row 1990-1992). Unfortunately McMurray was unable to transfer into the second round of qualifying on Saturday afternoon and settled for an 18th-place qualifying result. McMurray was able to pick-up positons in the early running before having to pit off sequence on lap 10 for a tire issue. The minor setback put the No. 1 Cessna Patriotic Chevy on a different pit strategy than several of the leaders, but the No. 1 team was able to take advantage of some cautions and close back up on the field. On the race’s final caution, crew chief Matt McCall, gambled on track positon and McMurray restarted second with just seven laps to go.

Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day.
