Billy Scott: Crew Chief, No. 41 Ford Mustang Birthdate: Sept. 6, 1977 Birthplace: Tampa, Florida Hometown: Land O’ Lakes, Florida Residence: Statesville, North Carolina Spouse: Brandy Children: Braden and Bailey Like many members of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, racing has been a part of Billy Scott’s life since he was a child. The Land O’ Lakes, Florida, native’s passion for motorsports began when he started racing at age 5. As a kid, Scott raced anything he could, from three-wheelers to motorcycles to go-karts. As his racing career progressed at paved short tracks across Florida, Scott competed in a variety of racecars including, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, open-wheel Modifieds and Late Models. After completing two years in the mechanical engineering program at the University of South Florida, Scott moved to North Carolina in 1998 and enrolled in the Bobby Isaac Motorsports Technology Program at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. While he furthered his education, Scott transitioned from racing to working on the racecars of others. In 2003, Scott went to work for a NASCAR Truck Series team where he changed tires as a member of the pit crew in addition to serving as a mechanic. It was during this time Scott realized that in order to reach his career goals, he would need to return to school and complete his engineering degree. “Tire changing is what got me in the door at the first team I worked with,” Scott said. “I was eager to be involved in the setup part of the equation and help make decisions.

Ron Capps celebrates his Winternationals victory with his NAPA team and family: from left, dad John, wife Shelley, son Caden and mom Betty. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing.

RODNEY CHILDERS: Crew Chief, No. 4 Ford Mustang Birthdate: June 7, 1976 Birthplace: Mooresville, North Carolina Hometown: Mooresville, North Carolina Residence: Mooresville, North Carolina Spouse: Katrina Children: Gavin, Brody In five seasons as crew chief for driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 team of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), Rodney Childers has built the fastest and most consistent racecars in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Since the first preseason test in December 2013 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, the No. 4 car has maintained the most speed and scored the most points in the NASCAR Cup Series garage. Childers, Harvick and the No. 4 team thrive amid the pressure to perform, which is exemplified by having reached the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway four times in the last five years and punctuated by their crowning as 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champions. Childers started the 2014 season with a blank sheet of paper and built the No. 4 team from scratch with new employees, new equipment and new racecars. Despite all the newness, Harvick’s winning ways remained constant. In just their second race of the season at ISM Raceway near Phoenix, Childers and Harvick scored their first victory in dominating fashion by leading 224 of 312 laps. The second win for the new team came just six races later in the Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, where the No. 4 car started from the pole and dominated again, leading 238 of 374 laps. While the pure speed of the No. 4 team was impressive, so was its determination and belief, no matter the odds.
