    People, Places and Policy Set within the context of UK devolution and constitutional change, People, Places and Policy offers important and interesting insights into ‘place-making’ and ‘locality-making’ in contemporary Wales. Combining policy research with policy-maker and stakeholder interviews at various spatial scales (local, regional, national), it examines the historical processes and working practices that have produced the complex political geography of Wales. This book looks at the economic, social and political geographies of Wales, which in the context of devolution and public service governance are hotly debated. It offers a novel ‘new localities’ theoretical framework for capturing the dynamics of locality-making, to go beyond the obsession with boundaries and coterminous geog- raphies expressed by policy-makers and politicians. Three localities – Heads of the Valleys (north of Cardiff), central and west coast regions (Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and the former district of Montgomeryshire in Powys) and the A55 corridor (from Wrexham to Holyhead) – are discussed in detail to illustrate this and also reveal the geographical tensions of devolution in contemporary Wales. This book is an original statement on the making of contemporary Wales from the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) researchers. It deploys a novel ‘new localities’ theoretical framework and innovative mapping techniques to represent spatial patterns in data. This allows the timely uncovering of both unbounded and fuzzy relational policy geographies, and the more bounded administrative concerns, which come together to produce and reproduce over time Wales’ regional geography. Llys Amaeth,Plas Gogerddan, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, SY23 3BT Telephone: 01970 820820 Executive Summary This report examines the benefits derived from the natural environment of the Cambrian Mountains, how this environment has been influenced by grazing livestock and the condition of the natural environment in the area. The report then assesses the factors currently causing changes to the Cambrian Mountains environment and discusses how to maintain the benefits derived from this environment in the future. Key findings: The Cambrian Mountains are one of Wales’ most important areas for nature, with 17% of the land designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). They are home to and often a remaining stronghold of a range of species and habitats of principal importance for the conservation of biological diversity with many of these species and habitats distributed outside the formally designated areas. The natural environment is critical to the economy of the Cambrian Mountains: agriculture, forestry, tourism, water supply and renewable energy form the backbone of the local economy. A range of non-market ecosystem services such as carbon storage and water regulation provide additional benefit to wider society. Documentary evidence shows the Cambrian Mountains have been managed with extensively grazed livestock for at least 800 years, while the pollen record and archaeological evidence suggest this way of managing the land has been important in the area since the Bronze Age.

    NEWS RELEASE Issued by the Telephone 02920 395031 Boundary Commission for Wales Caradog House Fax 02920 395250 1-6 St Andrews Place Cardiff CF10 3BE Date 25 August 2004 FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE PARLIAMENTARY CONSTITUENCIES IN THE PRESERVED COUNTY OF DYFED The Commission propose to make no change to their provisional recommendations for five constituencies in the preserved county of Dyfed. 1. Provisional recommendations in respect of Dyfed were published on 5 January 2004. The Commission received eleven representations, five of which were in support of their provisional recommendations. Three of the representations objected to the inclusion of the whole of the Cynwyl Elfed electoral division within the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency, one objected to the name of the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency and one suggested the existing arrangements for the area be retained. 2. The Commission noted that, having received no representation of the kind mentioned in section 6 (2) of the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 1986, there was no statutory requirement to hold a local inquiry. The Commission further decided that in all the circumstances they would not exercise their discretion under section 6 (1) to hold an inquiry. Final recommendations 3. The main objection to the provisional recommendations was in respect of the inclusion of the Cynwyl Elfed electoral division in the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency. It was argued that the division should be included in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr on the grounds that the majority of the electorate in the division fell within that constituency and that inclusion in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr rather than Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire would reduce the disparity between the electorates of the two constituencies and would bring them closer to the electoral quota.

    GWERSYLL YR URDD LLANGRANNOG INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Dear Parent / Guardian, We look forward to welcoming your child to the Urdd Centre at Llangrannog. This leaflet gives information on what will be needed for your child’s stay at the Centre. THE BEDROOMS A CHILD SHOULD BRING: you should ensure that a name All children sleep in centrally heated bedrooms. The children is shown on each item of clothing are responsible for making their beds and keeping the rooms 1. Sleeping bag tidy. We ensure that each child knows where to find help 2. Night clothes and toiletries during the night from staff who are close at hand. Corridor 3. Spare clothes (not the best) including long sleeved tops lights are on throughout the night. Trainers or suitable shoes for walking, and an old pair of and supper - with a variety of Healthy Eating menus to suit all shoes or wellingtons for the horse-riding and quad bikes tastes. The Centre has been awarded a Food Hygiene Rating 7. Suitable clothing for skiing and tobogganing i.e. old of 5 (see http://ratings.food.gov.uk/Welcome.aspx) under the gloves and an old tracksuit or jeans Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.     Ceredigion Welsh District Council Elections Results 1973-1991 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

Bu’r gweithdy’n brysur, ac mi gawson gyfl e i weld ffrwyth eu llafur ar y noson - amrywiaeth o hetiau o bob siap a maint wedi eu llunio o papier mache a fframiau pren. Wedi cyrraedd nôl i’r Neuadd cafwyd parti arbennig. Fe ymunwyd â ni gan y grãp gwerin A Llawer Mwy a fu’n ein diddanu gyda cherddoriaeth gwerin a dawnsio twmpath. O dan gyfarwyddid gwych y grãp mi ddawnsiodd mwyafrif y gynulleidfa o leiaf un cân! For the purposes of this work the BGS only used data which was publicly available at the end of February 2016. The one exception to this was the extent of Oil and Gas Authority licensing which was updated to include data to the end of June 2018. 1 RWM | Wales Subregion 5 Our work shows that we may find a suitable geological setting for a GDF in most of this subregion, but the lack of information at depth makes it difficult to know where the potential host rocks have suitable thicknesses and properties. Although rock can be seen at the surface over much of this subregion in sea cliffs, mountainous areas and man-made excavations such as quarries and road cuttings, there are very few deep boreholes or geophysical investigations to give us an understanding of the geology at depth. There are slates and similar strong rocks under most of the subregion in which we may be able to site a GDF.
