Opening Remarks and Welcome
Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel Die IOF (International Orienteering Federation) hat im Jahre 2003 Österreich mit der Ausrichtung der Senioren-Weltmeisterschaft im Orientierungslauf 2006 beauftragt. Für eine derartig komplizierte Veranstaltung werden – und das ist dem Laien kaum bekannt – Jahre benötigt: Bei dieser Weltmeisterschaft sind sechzehn Gemeinden und acht Waldgebiete involviert, wobei natürlich der Österreichische Jagdverband wesentlich eingebunden ist. Für die Läufer mussten Spezialkarten entwickelt werden, die dem luxuriösen GPS-System zu Ehre gereichen würde. Die Senioren-Weltmeisterschaft ist die größte Veranstaltung, die im Orientierungslauf in Österreich je stattgefunden hat. Über 4.100 Nennungen aus 41 Ländern aller Kontinente liegen vor, Frauen und Männer werden laufen und ein Großteil von ihnen kommt aus den skandinavischen Ländern, wo Orientierungslauf für viele Menschen Passion ist. Insgesamt werden rund 6.000 Personen im Raum von Wiener Neustadt, Baden, Bad Tatzmannsdorf, bis zum Semmering in der ersten Juli-Woche wegen dieser wichtigen Sportveranstaltung bei uns sein. Ich begrüße diese Veranstaltung sehr und hoffe, dass diese Randsportart mehr ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit rückt. Der Orientierungslauf verlangt nicht nur erstklassige Kondition, sondern auch entsprechende Intelligenz. Nur mit beiden Komponenten kann man in diesem Sport - wie auch sonst im Leben – erfolgreich sein. Dass diese Sparte des Laufens noch mit Genuss bis ins hohe Alter betrieben werden kann, macht einen zusätzlichen Reiz aus. Ich verneige mich vor jenem Mann, der noch mit 90 Jahren an dieser Weltmeisterschaft teilnimmt. Danken möchte ich dem Heeressportverein Wiener Neustadt, allen voran Wettkampfleiter Gottfried Tobler, für die Organisation dieser für die Region und Österreich insgesamt so imageträchtigen Veranstaltung. Günther Platter In der ersten Juliwoche werden sich rund 4.500 Läuferinnen und Läufer aus 41 Nationen im Orientierungslauf messen. Die wunderbare Landschaft im südlichen Niederösterreich bietet dafür eine eindrucksvolle Kulisse. Besonders wird aber auch die breite Beteiligung von Sportlern sein – an den Bewerben werden sich Athletinnen und Athleten zwischen 35 und 90 Jahren beteiligen. Sport ist für die körperliche Leistungsfähigkeit der Soldaten und Soldatinnen unverzichtbar. Darüber hinaus verbindet der Sport aber auch Menschen aus vielen Ländern. Der Wettkampf ist zwar ein wichtiges Element, dennoch werden durch das gemeinsame Sporterlebnis Barrieren überwunden. Dass bei den „World Masters“ 41 Nationen vertreten sein werden, ist dafür der beste Beweis. Das Österreichische Bundesheer ist einer der größten Sportförderer Österreichs. Auch für mich persönlich sind Sport und Bewegung eine wichtige Energiequelle. Der Heeressport zeichnet sich dabei durch seine positive Einstellung zum Leben voller Aktivität und einem zukunftsorientiertem Bundesheer aus.

Durch die hervorragende Organisation des Heeressportvereines ist diese sportliche Großveranstaltung in Wiener Neustadt möglich. Mag. Karl Schweitzer Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren! Herzlich Willkommen bei der Senioren-Weltmeisterschaft im Orientierungslauf im südlichen Niederösterreich. Gerne übernehme ich für diesen Lauf-Event den Ehrenschutz. Sportliche Betätigung im Rahmen von Wettkämpfen – in welchen Altersklassen auch immer – verbindet Freude an Bewegung und Leistung, verlangt aber auch von den Aktiven ein enormes Maß an Ausdauer. Darüber hinaus ist Sport in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einer Größe geworden, die einen wesentlichen volkswirtschaftlichen Beitrag leistet, und vor allem Arbeitsplätze schafft und sichert. Sport ist daher nicht mehr nur die „wichtigste Nebensache der Welt“, sondern längst zu einem gesellschaftspolitischen Faktor geworden, der zu anderen Politikbereichen in der Wertigkeit aufgeschlossen hat. Ich möchte dem Heeressportverein Orientierungslauf Wiener Neustadt für ihr Engagement bei der Durchführung dieser Weltmeisterschaften danken und bin sicher, dass alle Vorbereitungen getroffen wurden, um diese Lauf-Konkurrenz sportlich klaglos abzuwickeln. Allen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern wünsche ich, dass sie ihre Ziele umsetzen können und darüber hinaus viel Freude an ihrer Sportart haben. Mag. Karl Schweitzer, Staatssekretär für Sport
Dr. Erwin Pröll Orientierungssinn, Ausdauer, rasche Auffassungsgabe und Konzentration sind ohne Zweifel Grundvoraussetzungen, die im Orientierungslauf von großer Bedeutung sind. Nicht zuletzt deshalb ist regelmäßiges und intensives Training notwendig, um sich bei nationalen und internationalen Wettkämpfen mit anderen zu messen. Zum Höhepunkt eines Sportlers zählen zweifelsohne Weltmeisterschaften, gilt es doch dabei aus den Besten die Allerbesten zu küren. Als Landeshauptmann freut es mich ganz besonders, dass die diesjährigen Senioren – Weltmeisterschaften im Orientierungslauf in Wiener Neustadt stattfinden und ich möchte auf diesem Weg alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer herzlich begrüßen. Mit diesen Weltmeisterschaften präsentiert sich das Sportland Niederösterreich einmal mehr als Austragungsort internationaler Sportveranstaltungen. WIENER NEUSTADT 2006 - WORLD MASTERS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS 6 web version
Dr. Petra Bohuslav Die Austragung der seit bereits 20 Jahren etablierten Senioren WM im Orientierungslauf wurde erstmalig an Österreich vergeben. Es freut mich ganz besonders, dass die WM der Senioren vom 1. – 7. Juli 2006 in meiner näheren Heimat in Wiener Neustadt stattfinden. Da die Einstufung als „Senioren“ im Orientierungslauf bereits mit 35 Jahren beginnt, ist zum einen ein sportliches Großereignis mit ca. 4000 Wettkämpfern und auch sehr hochkarätiger Besetzung zu rechnen. Der Orientierungslauf hat sich ja in den letzten Jahren sowohl sportlich wie auch in der öffentlichen Aufmerksamkeit stark weiterentwickelt. Eine Veranstaltung dieser Größenordnung hat einen großen Werbeeffekt sowohl für den Orientierungslauf, als auch für die Region und das gesamte Bundesland Niederösterreich, wurde doch diese Veranstaltung weltweit in den 65 Mitgliedsstaaten beworben. Aus eigener Erfahrung als Sportreferentin des Landes Niederösterreich weiß ich genau, welcher Einsatz, wie viele uneigennützige Handgriffe und welches Know how in einer derartigen Veranstaltung steckt. Deshalb möchte ich allen Mitgliedern, Mitarbeitern und Funktionären für deren Einsatz bei den intensiven Vorbereitungen meinen besonderen Dank zum Ausdruck bringen. Dem Organisationsteam beim HSV Wiener Neustadt wünsche ich daher einen reibungslosen Ablauf des Wettkampfes, sowie weiterhin viele Erfolge bei der Erfüllung seiner gesellschaftspolitischen und sportlichen Aufgaben. Bernhard Müller Das Jahr 2006 wird als DAS Sportjahr in die Geschichte Wiener Neustadts eingehen. Kaum ein Monat vergeht, in dem nicht ein sportliches Großereignis über die Bühne geht. Schon im März duellierten sich Österreichs Top-Schwimmer in der „Aqua Nova“ bei den nationalen Meisterschaften, im Juni waren die besten heimischen Beach Volleyballer am Hauptplatz zu Gast, im August kommt es zu den Weltmeisterschaften im Militärischen Fünfkampf. All dies wird durch die mehr als 4.000 Teilnehmer bei den „World Masters Orienteering Championships“, den Senioren-Weltmeisterschaften im Orientierungslauf, gekrönt. Eine Woche lang messen sich die weltbesten Orientierungsläufer über 35 Jahre in der Region rund um unsere Stadt. Als Bürgermeister heiße ich die Gäste aus aller Welt recht, recht herzlich willkommen und bin überzeugt, dass sie dem Charme Wiener Neustadts erliegen und die Vorzüge der Stadt genießen werden. Eine Veranstaltung wie diese kann natürlich nur funktionieren, wenn dahinter ein engagiertes Organisationsteam – in diesem Fall der HSV Orientierungslauf mit Gottfried Tobler an der Spitze – steht. Die Stadt Wiener Neustadt hat mit den Organisatoren in den letzten Monaten sehr eng zusammengearbeitet, weil uns die Orientierungslauf- Weltmeisterschaften ein großes Anliegen sind. Ich möchte den Organisatoren auf diesem Wege herzlich für Ihr Engagement danken und den Orientierungsläufern aus aller Welt viel Erfolg wünschen. Mögen sich in sportlich fairen Bewerben letzten Endes die Besseren durchsetzen. Dafür alles Gute und einen schönen Aufenthalt in unserer wunderschönen Stadt!

Sonja Zwazl Ein Ereignis wie die Senioren-Weltmeisterschaft im Orientierungslauf ist nicht nur in sportlicher Hinsicht von großer Bedeutung, es gehen von ihr zahlreiche Impulse aus. Besonders die ansässigen Klein- und Mittelbetriebe - die KMU - profitieren davon in vielfältigster Weise. Und wie heißt es doch so schön? Geht es der Wirtschaft gut, geht es uns allen gut! Nutznießer ist die gesamte Region. Dabei sind nicht nur der direkte touristische Mehrwert und die damit verbundene Wertschöpfung von großer Bedeutung, es darf auch der mit der Berichterstattung über die Veranstaltung verbundene Zusatznutzen nicht außer Acht gelassen werden. Schließlich ist so ein „Event“ ein äußerst wirkungsvolles Marketinginstrument. Während die Besucher direkt für Einnahmen sorgen, steigert die Sportberichterstattung die Bekanntheit der Region und macht so vor allem in touristischer Hinsicht „Appetit auf mehr“. Diese Werbung ist im Grunde unbezahlbar! Eines möchte ich als Wirtschaftskammer Präsidentin auf keinen Fall vergessen zu erwähnen: Nämlich, dass private Initiative im Falle des World Masters großgeschrieben wird und den Schlüssel zum Erfolg darstellt! Es bedarf schon eines immensen Einsatzes und Engagements, um eine derartige Veranstaltung auf die Beine zu stellen. Dafür zeichnet sich die Familie Tobler, allen voran Vater Gottfried aus. Und dafür sage ich herzlichen Dank! Wir von der Wirtschaftskammer Niederösterreich schätzen diese Initiative wirklich sehr, auch weil wir wissen, welche Anstrengungen mit einer Veranstaltung dieser Größenordnung verbunden sind. Abschließend wünsche ich den Veranstaltern und den Teilnehmern weiterhin viel Erfolg. Den Besuchern wünsche ich viel Spaß beim Event und dass sie auch Zeit finden, um die Schönheiten und Sehenswürdigkeiten dieser wunderschönen niederösterreichischen Region gebührend zu bewundern und zu genießen. Prof. Mag. Johann Culik Sehr geehrte Sportlerinnen und Sportler, geschätzte Wettkämpfer! In diesem Jahr werden die „World Masters Orienteering Championships“ erstmals in ihrer 20-jährigen Geschichte in Österreich, genauer gesagt im südlichen Niederösterreich, ausgetragen. Als Militärkommandant und Präsident des Heeressportlandesverbandes Niederösterreich möchte ich Sie, geschätzte Wettkämpfer, in Wiener Neustadt, dem Austragungsort dieser Weltmeisterschaft, sehr herzlich begrüßen. Niederösterreich hat sich im Laufe der Jahre zu einem wahren Sportland entwickelt. Dies zeigen vor allem die nationalen und internationalen Erfolge unserer Athleten, aber auch die Sportbegeisterung der Bevölkerung. Die Sportpolitik des Landes zielt daher besonders auf den stetigen Ausbau von Sporteinrichtungen und die massive Förderung des Nachwuchses. In diese Richtung leisten jedoch auch die vielen niederösterreichischen Sportvereine mit viel Idealismus und Engagement wertvolle und unbezahlbare Arbeit. In diesem Zusammenhang freut mich ganz besonders, dass die vielen Heeressportvereine unseres Landes einen sehr großen Anteil dieser Erfolge für sich verbuchen können.

Schließlich ist Heeressport nicht Selbstzweck, sondern ein wichtiger Beitrag zur körperlichen und charakterlichen Erziehung - Arbeit am Menschen schlechthin. Er erfüllt dadurch eine wichtige Funktion im Dienst am Menschen und der Gemeinschaft, der in all seinem Tun das große Ziel verfolgt, den Gedanken der Landesverteidigung in der Bevölkerung auf dem „Wege des Sports" zu vertiefen. Die Verbindung zwischen Militär und Sport spiegelt sich aber auch in der Sportart Orientierungslauf. Einerseits im kognitiven Teil - das Orientieren, das Planen und Entscheiden über Routenalternativen - und andererseits im physischen Teil - dem Laufen, der Kondition und Geschicklichkeit im unwegsamen Gelände. Beide Bereiche stehen in Wechselbeziehung zueinander und genau das ist es, was den Reiz dieser Sportart ausmacht, also „Laufen mit Köpfchen“. Nur eine gute Kombination aus beiden Komponenten führt zum Erfolg. Typisch für diese Sportart ist aber auch, dass sich ganze Familien über mehrere Generationen hinweg dafür begeistern. Denn Orientierungslauf ist Breiten- und Gesundheitssport, aber auch Spitzen- und Leistungssport. Er ist ein Sport für Frauen wie für Männer, vom Vorschulkind bis zur achtzigjährigen Seniorin. Beim Orientierungslauf können die Athleten Natur aktiv erleben und sich gleichzeitig im sportlichen Wettstreit messen. Die Organisatoren der diesjährigen „World Masters Orienteering Championships“ haben alles daran gesetzt um eine perfekte Veranstaltung abwickeln zu können. Ich bin überzeugt, dass die Weltmeisterschaft 2006 ein voller Erfolg und zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis in unserer reizvollen Landschaft wird. Abschließend wünsche ich allen Sportlerinnen und Sportlern faire, verletzungsfreie und erfolgreiche Wettkämpfe, sowie für die Zukunft weiterhin Freude am Orientierungslauf. Generalmajor Prof. Mag. Mag. Norbert Sinn Als Kommandant der ältesten und gleichzeitig wohl auch einer der modernsten Militärakademien der Welt begrüße ich die Teilnehmer an den Seniorenweltmeisterschaften im Orientierungslauf. Läuferinnen und Läufer aus vielen Nationen mögen sich hier in Freundschaft begegnen und im sportlichen Wettkampf messen. Es steht außer Zweifel, dass diese Art des Wettstreites einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Völkerverständigung leistet. Gerade wir Soldaten wissen den Orientierungslauf in all seinen Facetten zu schätzen. Logisches Denken, gepaart mit Ausdauer und Schnelligkeit, ergeben eine anspruchsvolle Sportart, die höchste Konzentration und Einsatz von jedem Läufer fordert. Daher wird der Orientierungslauf seit Jahrzehnten als zutiefst militärische Sportart an unserer traditionsreichen Ausbildungsstätte für Offiziere des Österreichischen Bundesheeres mit Ehrgeiz und großem Erfolg betrieben. Ich möchte darauf hinweisen, dass Wiener Neustadt nicht nur als Garnisons- und Sportstadt große Bedeutung hat, sondern auch als Kulturzentrum unseres Landes vieles zu bieten hat. Ich hoffe, dass Sie, sehr geehrte Sportlerinnen und Sportler, neben Ihren Wettkämpfen auch Zeit finden, unsere zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besichtigen um einen guten Eindruck in Ihre Heimat mitzunehmen. Möge diese Weltmeisterschaft auch dazu beitragen, neue Verbindungen zu knüpfen und bereits bestehende Freundschaften zu vertiefen.

Dr. Christian Konrad Sehr geehrte Orientierungsläuferinnen und -läufer, liebe Freunde des Orientierungslaufsports! Es freut mich, dass mit dem Österreichischen Fachverband für Orientierungslauf ein „Partner in der Natur der NÖ Jägerschaft“ die diesjährige Senioren-WM im OL in Niederösterreich ausrichtet. Ake Jacobson It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. I cannot imagine a more exciting time to be in Austria than in 2006. Austria, in the year of the 250 th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, possibly the best known Austrian of all time, will provide a beautiful natural environment for a high quality World Masters Orienteering Championships and a unique cultural experience. The WMOC, with over 4000 competitors, will be an exciting, keenly contested competition; a challenge for all. It will bring people from around the world together in a spirit of friendship and community. This is the essence of orienteering. The IOF will, at its XXIII Congress at the end of July, consider a long-term strategic plan for world orienteering - Strategic Directions 2006-2012. The document lists, what one might call the fundamental values of our sport – orienteering is at one with nature, it is mentally and physically challenging, it develops self-confidence, independence and life skills, it is a lifelong sport, enhancing the quality of life. Orienteering is gender neutral, is committed to being a drug free sport and is characterised by the notion of fair play. The WMOC in Austria will provide a perfect opportunity to witness the realisation of such values. The competition will be a testament to the fundamental values of orienteering. Mag. Thomas Hlosta Die WMOC sind der Höhepunkt des Jahres für den österreichischen Orientierungssport. Noch nie hat in Österreich ein OL mit ca. 4500 Teilnehmern stattgefunden. Seit der Vergabe durch die IOF im Jahr 2002 bereitet sich der veranstaltende Verein HSV Wiener Neustadt intensiv auf dieses Großereignis vor. Ich bin mir sicher, dass es dem Vereinschef Gottfried Tobler und seinen zahlreichen Helfern gelingen wird, für die Teilnehmer aus insgesamt 41 Nationen ein würdiges Ereignis durchzuführen. Der HSV Wiener Neustadt hat bereits im Jahr 1988 einen viel beachteten Weltcupbewerb veranstaltet, übrigens auf der Karte Wöllersdorf, auf der heuer die Qualifikationsläufe stattfinden werden. 1992 war der HSV Wiener Neustadt gemeinsam mit den NF Wien Ausrichter eines internationalen 5-Tages Laufes mit über 1700 Teilnehmern. Auch auf nationaler Ebene ist dieser Verein stets unter den TOP Vereinen zu finden, sowohl in sportlicher Hinsicht, als auch als anerkannter Veranstalter. Im Namen des Österreichischen Fachverband für Orientierungslauf möchte ich mich beim HSV Wiener Neustadt ganz herzlich für die unzähligen ehrenamtlichen Stunden der Vorbereitung auf dieses Großereignis bedanken. How to reach the EC By car: use the S4 motorway and take the exit “Wiener Neustadt-Süd” and follow the signs to the EC. By plane: from Vienna airport (65 km) take the train or order bus / taxi. By train: the railway station of Wiener Neustadt is situated 1 km west of the EC.

Parking passes are available at the EC for private cars and coaches for the whole week at the following rates: Up to 9 seats: € 20 Over 9 seats: € 40 This covers the cost parking at Model Events, Warm up and on race days and includes the shuttle busses from the parking area to the different venues. Please have your parking pass visible on the dashboard of your vehicle. Vehicles without a pass will be charged at the venues at € 10 per car per day or € 20 per bus per day.
Rented SI-cards / Purchased SI-cards If you have rented or purchased an SI-card when you registered, it will be provided in your package. The rented SI-cards you have to return to the EC Information desk at the finish after your last event. Competitors with rented SI-cards obtain € 20 when returning the SI- card. If you lose your SI-card, a limited number of rental SI-cards will be available at the EC Information desk, on site at the assembly areas ( € 25).
Accommodation You will get all necessary information about accommodation at the EC.
Transport Runners who have requested transport will receive details and tickets in their team bag at the EC.
Tickets Tickets are available for Mozart concert (July 1) and Banquet (July 5). If you have ordered a ticket when you registered, it will be provided in your package. Internet Access There will be a room with some computers and internet access at the EC. The room will be supervised daily from 1800 until 2200. Access will be free, but limited to 10 minutes per person in case of great request.
Banking Facilities In and around Wiener Neustadt there are numerous banks with Automatic Teller Machines. All these banks will exchange foreign currency. Opening hours are generally 0800 – 1230 in the morning and 1330 – 1530 in the afternoon.

Competition Information
Rules of Competition The competition will be conducted under Competition Rules for IOF Foot Orienteering Events (2004 Edition). The IOF takes precedence in the event of a conflict. Copies of these can be downloaded from: http://www.orienteering.org/rules.htm.
Fair Play All competitors shall behave with fairness and honesty. All competition areas are embargoed. Any attempt to survey, walk or train in the competition areas is forbidden. Attempts to gain any information related to the course, beyond that provided by the organizer, is forbidden before and during the competition. Having crossed the finish line, a competitor may not re-enter the competition terrain without the permission of the organizer. This includes the start and start area. It is not allowed to bring the previous and new maps along to the competition areas. A competitor who breaks any rule, or benefits from the breaking of any rule, may be disqualified.
Drug Policy The IOF Anti-Doping Rules apply to all IOF events. See web address above for rules.
Terrain The terrain of both Qualification Races and the Final Race are moderately hilly, open and very runable terrain. All three maps have a partially high density of paths and forest roads and a number of complex detailed areas with contour and rock features. All terrains are between 300 m and 600 m above sea level.
Maps The Championship orienteering maps have been made according to IOF at the scale 1:10000 with 5 metre contours, using OCAD version 8.13. The printing method used for all maps is spot colour. Competition maps will be sealed in plastic bags. Legends will not be included on competition maps. All competition maps will be collected at the finish. After the last start (Q2 and Finals) new competition maps are available at the EC Information desk in the finish area. Please bring your Club-ID along.
Special features Root stocks are drawn with green crosses in the map.

Controls Each control is equipped with: One stake of approximately 1 m. One or more electronic station (SI–station), which will be put on the electronic unit. One non electronic punching device (for use when the electronic unit is not working). On the low map you will find little boxes that you must use when you could not punch in the SI-station because it was not working. A number code will be put on the SI- station; the number codes used will be from 31 to 255. There are lots of controls in the forest. Check your control codes!
Control Descriptions Control descriptions will be printed on the front of all competition maps. Copies of the control descriptions will also be available as part of the start procedure. They will not be distributed with registration material before the event. Competitors who intend to collect control descriptions at the Start are reminded that they will have one minute in which to secure their control description sheets as they choose.
Electronic Punching System The SportIdent system will be used for all races. If you are using a rental SI-card and this is your last race, please return your SI-card to the EC Information desk.
SI-cards It is important that you always use your own. You will not be allowed to start with the wrong SI-card.
Clear and check Each SI-card must be cleared before each event. Stations to clear SI-cards will be located in the first start box. Insert your SI-card and wait a few seconds until the ‘clear’ unit beeps and flashes, verifying that previous data has been deleted. After clearing your SI-card, please place your SI-card into a ‘check’ unit where the ‘check’ unit will beep and flash immediately, indicating your SI-card is ready to use.
At each control At each control insert your SI-card into the control unit until the unit beeps and flashes. The red light and beep do not guarantee that the competitor is at the correct control. This should be checked in the usual manner by reading the control number. If you do punch at an incorrect control, simply continue to the correct control; the extra punch will be disregarded by the results software. If the control unit does not function (there is no beep and / or flash) then use the pin punch hanging on the control stand and punch in a reserve box on your map. If you have punched any controls on your map you must hand the map in at the problem table before leaving the finish area and explain what you have done. At some controls there may be 2 or more control units. You may use any of the units

At the finish At the finish line you must punch at one of the units on the finish line. Your elapsed race time stops when you punch one of these units. Competitors must punch one of the finish units even if they don’t complete their course.
After the finish line After the finish line you will be directed to the download station where the data from your SI-card will be transferred into the results system. The system will verify you visited all of the controls in the correct order and will print your split times. If you are using a rental SI-card and this is your last race, please return your SI-card to the EC Information desk where you obtain € 20.
Start Lists and Results Start Lists for the Qualification races will be included in each participant’s package. Start Lists for the Qualification races will be available for review by participants at the EC, EC Information desk at assembly area, and at each start. Start times for the Finals will be available on the www.wmoc06.com website by 1400, Thursday, July 6, as well as at the EC. They will also be posted at the EC Information desk at the Finals assembly area Friday morning. Provisional results lists will be continuously updated at each assembly area. The complete results lists will be displayed at the EC from 2000 hours after each race. Individual split times and accumulated times will be given to each competitor after crossing the finish line. All start lists, results lists, split times and accumulated times will be made available on the website www.wmoc06.com.
Warm-up maps Close to the start area, along the path leading to the start, the runners will find little boxes with small maps of the pre-start area, with which they will be able to get used to the scale and to the terrain (here will be some control points without SI-units).

Start Procedure At the pre-start area you will pass through 3 consecutive start boxes, and remain in each box for 1 minute. You must clear your SI-card. You should place the SI-card into the clear station until the red light and beep signal indicate that it has been cleared. A check station is provided and should be used to ensure that the SI-card has been properly cleared. When the clock in front of the first start boxes displays the runner’s start time, the runner enters the first box. This will be 3 minutes before the start. It is a silent start, be there on time! In the first box the competitors have to clear and check their SI-card. Runner’s bib number, SI-card number, cleared SI-card will be checked. In the second box each runner will pick up his / her loose control description (self service). Runners must bring their own equipment to carry the loose control description during the race. The control descriptions will also be printed on the map. In the third (last) box each runner goes to the map box labelled with the correct class and waits in front of the map box for the remaining part of the minute. The start is indicated by a series of beeps from a clock. At the last beep the race starts. The runner then takes the map from the map box. The control description and class will be printed on each competition map. The runner is responsible for taking the correct map. The runner follows a marked route to the start point which is indicated by a control flag in the terrain and a triangle on the competition map. Runners with the wrong SI-card will not be allowed to start.

Finish Procedure All runners are required to pass the finish line, including those runners who do not complete the whole course. Runners who do not pass the finish line will be considered as “missing in the forest”, and may cause a search in the forest for the missing person. Your bib number must be clearly visible as you cross the finish line. When the runner reaches the finish line, the SI-card must be placed into one of the control units situated directly on the finish line. The time has been recorded and the race is over when the light flashes and / or the control unit beeps. You must stay in line until your SI- card has been downloaded. Finish Station 1 : The runner will proceed to the download station where he / she will place the SI-card into the downloading unit, and wait for the official’s confirmation. If the finish official reports a problem (example, one or more missing controls, or even if downloading fails), the runner must follow the instructions given by the finish official. The runner will be given a copy of his / her split times. If you have used one or more of the needle punches, you must take your map to the problems table where it will be collected and marked with your competition / bib number for later analysis. Competitors who are disqualified for other reasons should also go to the problems table. Finish Station 2: The runner will place his / her competition map into the box. All competition maps will be collected. The runner proceeds to the refreshment table.
Disqualification If a runner is missing one or more controls, the runner will be disqualified, and the results will show ‘mp’ or ‘disq’. If the runner’s disqualification is due to another reason, the results list will also show ‘mp’ or ‘disq’ for that competitor. Note: If a competitor runs with a different SI-card than he / she is registered with in the start lists, the runner will get no time registered and will be disqualified. It is the runner’s responsibility to run with the correct SI- card.

Map Reclaim Runners will receive a new map with their course printed on it. Maps can be collected by the contact person using the club-number. For the Qualification Races, map reclaim will be from 1430 in the assembly area only after the 2 nd Qualification. On the Finals day, clean maps will be available at the EC Information desk at the assembly area 1500 – 1700, in the EC 1800 – 2200 or on Saturday. Clean maps and some maps with courses will be available at the EC for € 5 per map on Saturday.
Qualification Races For the qualification races, the competitors in some classes are allocated to parallel heats by a random draw. The heats are indicated by numbers. Each runner will be in the same heat for both qualification races. Each participant has 2 hours 30 minutes to complete his / her course.
Refreshments There will be pure drinking water at the start, in the forest and at the assembly area. The water stations in the forest will be supervised by volunteers. Locations will be specified using a small glass symbol on the map.
First Aid There will be first aid facilities at all three races. First aid locations on the competition maps will be designated by the standard IOF symbol (a purple cross). In case of accident, illness or injury fellow competitors are obliged to assist. Further assistance may be obtained from either First Aid or Drink stations.
Ticks All WMOC-competitions will take place in areas with ticks. For your own safety, please read the following information carefully. In case you get problems with ticks during the WMOC-week, please contact the doctor in the finish area.
About ticks There are eight different types of ticks in Austria which are known as vectors of disease of spring-summer encephalitis and borreliosis. The most important one is called Ixodes ricinus, which has sting-sucking mouthparts. The outside surface, or cuticle, of ticks actually grows to accommodate the large volume of blood ingested, which may be anywhere from 100-200 times their unfed body weight.
Danger of infection Ticks seek hosts by "questing". Questing ticks crawl up the stems of grass or perch on the edges of leaves on the ground in a typical posture with the front legs extended, especially in response to a host passing by. Certain bio chemicals such as carbon dioxide as well as heat and movement serve as stimuli for questing behaviour. Subsequently, these ticks climb on to a potential host which brushes against their extended front legs.

Removal of ticks Using a fine-point tweezers, grasp the tick just behind the point of attachment and pull slowly and steadily until the tick is dislodged. Vaseline, matches and other alternate methods of removal should be avoided. Wash the bite area, apply antiseptic and cover with a band-aid.
Spring-summer encephalitis Spring-summer encephalitis is a virus disease which leads to inflammation of the cerebric, meninges and central nervous system. The symptoms may be similar to influenza (headache, limb pains and fever). The disease may lead to permanent injury to health and may be lethal as well. There is no specific therapy to cure the disease. It's only possible to relieve the symptoms. The only health protection is inoculation.
Showers and toilets There will be toilets at all the assembly areas (Warm up, Park Race, Model events, Qualifications and Finals). Limited toilet facilities will be provided on the way to the start. There will be showers at all the assembly areas except the Model events.
Clothing There are no restrictions on the type of clothing to be worn. Spike shoes are not allowed in Austrian forest. All other Orienteering shoes are allowed (e.g. dobb-shoes).
Clothing Return There will be no clothing transfer available from each start to the assembly area, except in the case of very bad weather.
Bib Every competitor will be issued a numbered bib which must be worn on the chest in each race. Information on bibs will consist of competitor’s name, number, age class and heat, start times for qualification races and which Start. Additional special buttons will be worn by the competitors of the A-categories for the Finals race. See ‘How to Qualify for the Finals’ later in this section.
Food and Drink A variety of foods and drinks will be available at the assembly areas on WMOC competition days.

Complaints and Protests Any complaint shall be made in writing to the organizer as soon as possible, at the EC Information desk in the finish area. The Organizers will decide on a complaint and inform the complainant of the result as soon as possible. There is no fee for a complaint. Protests can be made against the organizers’ decision on a complaint, no later than 1 hour after that decision has been reached. Protests must be in writing and handed to the IOF Controller or Jury member. Protests will be handled by the Jury. There is no fee for a protest.
How to Qualify for the Finals Only competitors who start in either of the qualification races may run in the Final. Based upon the combined times of the two qualification races, the best competitors from each qualification race heat will qualify for the “A” final of the class. The next best competitors from each race heat will qualify for the “B” final. If there are from 20 to 160 qualifiers, then they shall be split as equally as possible between an “A” final and a “B” final, with the “A” final having at least half the total number of qualifiers. If there are less than 20 qualifiers, then all shall compete in the “A” final. Competitors who start, but are not placed in either or both qualification races, may start before the qualified runners in the lowest ranked final of their class, but shall appear in the results as not placed. The start order in the Finals is the reverse of the placing in the Qualification Races Heats. This means that the best competitor in the heats will start last. According to IOF rules, ties shall be decided by drawing lots. Example, if two competitors tie for 6th place in heat 1, a coin shall be tossed to determine who has placed 6 and who has placed 7 in heat 1 for the purposes of this rule. Competitors with the same place in the different parallel heats start in the sequence of the number of their qualification heats, i.e. 1, 2, 3… the winner of the highest “numbered” heat therefore starts last. The runners in each “A” final will wear additional buttons on their bibs, which distinguish them out from the others. These distinctive buttons will be distributed at the Pre-start. If you are in the “A” final, please allow an extra 10 minutes at the Pre-Start so you can get your button attached. A volunteer will assist you. Each participant has 2 hours 30 minutes to complete his / her course.

WMOC2006 Banquet Wednesday, July 5 The Arena Nova Classic in Wiener Neustadt, Neunkirchnerstraße 17, opens at 1830 hours, with the banquet commencing at 1900 hours. This former church was converted in 1898 to a banquet and concert hall. It is close to the EC. At the banquet, the Hans Czettel - band will entertain with Jazz and Austrian music. If you have bought a banquet ticket, it will be in your package. This night we serve typical Austrian food and some international specialities..

Tourist programme Thursday, July 6 Tickets for the tourist programme are available until Tuesday, July 4. 1. Guided bus tour to Vienna (Opera House, Parliament, Burgtheater, Rathaus, Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace). Price: € 35 (not including entrance fees). Meeting place : EC at 0800 hours. Return in the late afternoon. 2. Guided bus tour to Baden and Eisenstadt : “On the footsteps of MOZART, BEETHOVEN AND HAYDEN”. Price: € 40 (including coach, not including entrance fees in Baden and at Esterházy Palace, lunch at the “Heurigen” in Tattendorf.) Meeting place : EC at 0830 hours. Return in the late afternoon. 3. Ride up Schneeberg Mountain (2076m) on the nostalgic rack railway (1897!). In fact the train “Salamander” climbs a total of 1,218 meters in altitude during its 9,8 km trip. Then we offer you a guided walk to the top of the mountain and back (7 km and 275 meters in altitude, 2 hours 30 minutes to go). Train back at 1430. You reach Wiener Neustadt at 1630.Price: € 45.
