  • Home. Health. Hope
HomeFront ANNUAL REPORT 2016 JULY 1, 2015 – JUNE 30,2016 Home. Health. Hope. HOMEFront • ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2016 • jerusalemhouse.org 1 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE MAY 10, 2017 With support from you, other generous donors, and federal grants, Jerusalem House expanded the number of homes we provide from 140 to 308, nearly a 125% increase, housing 356 residents, including 97 children, in the last year. We are deeply grateful to you and our community. You are helping homeless and low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS regain their health and their lives by providing stable homes and supportive services. While our goal—to provide homes and support to everyone affected by HIV/AIDS in need in Greater Atlanta—is unchanged, we must pause our expansion due to anticipated changes in federal funding. When we learn more, we will determine if we can continue the expansion and how large it may be. We will continue to update you on this issue. We are happy to share that two years into the New Horizons Program, Jerusalem House’s Tenant- Based Rental Assistance program, we have had great success. Unlike Jerusalem House’s other programs, New Horizons is not permanent housing provided by Jerusalem House. Residents get their apartment leases in their own names and pay most of their rent and utilities; Jerusalem House pays just a portion. The program bridges the gap between agency-provided permanent housing and independent housing. Currently, we assist 44 people through this program. Housing is healthcare. With their own homes, individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS regain the stability they need to improve their health, set goals, and move forward with their lives.

  • Jon Batiste - We Are Episode 205
Song Exploder Jon Batiste - We Are Episode 205 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“We Are” by JON BATISTE) Hrishikesh: Jon Batiste is a pianist, songwriter, and composer from New Orleans. He’s been nominated for multiple Grammys, and just won the Golden Globe and got an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack to the Pixar film Soul, which he composed along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Jon is also a recipient of the American Jazz Museum’s lifetime achievement award, and on weeknights, you can see him as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In March 2021, he put out his new album, We Are. But the title track from it actually came out much earlier last year in June 2020. Jon: We put the song out during the Black Lives Matter protest before it was even finished being mixed and mastered. Hrishikesh: In this episode, Jon talks about how he drew from his roots, both at a personal level and at a cultural level, and wove all of it into the song. Jon: I’m Jon Batiste. (Music fades out) Jon: So I started working on this song in September of 2019 with Kizzo, a great producer from the Netherlands, and Autumn Rowe. We met up in New York City. And this is pre-COVID, my life is busy - I'm doing the Late Show, I'm writing the score for Soul.

“WHERE THE MIX IS PERFECT”: VOICES FROM THE POST-MOTOWN SOUNDSCAPE by Carleton S. Gholz B.A., Macalester College, 1999 M.A., University of Pittsburgh, 2007 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2011 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Carleton S. Zboray, Department of Communication ii Copyright © by Carleton S. Gholz 2011 iii “WHERE THE MIX IS PERFECT”: VOICES FROM THE POST-MOTOWN SOUNDSCAPE Carleton S. Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.
